I learned that Johnny Appleseed was a folktown hero because he planted appleseeds. I thought it was sad when his mom and his little brother died, and his dad went to war.

Not exactly environmentally friendly. One of my students asked a good question about tree chopping in this book. He wondered why Johnny Appleseed would want to cut down trees if he loved nature and the woods so much. I told him I didn't know and it doesn't really make sense, does it? I love to watch them become more socially and environmentally conscious :)

Fun tall tale about how apple orchards spread across part of the country! Steven Kellogg's illustrations lend themselves well to tall tales like Johnny Appleseed--lots of color and detail.

This book shows the flip-side of Kellogg's personality, the serious side if you will. It is a collection of facts and mythology about the life of John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed. It's a nice piece of American history/lore. In terms of the art, I particularly like his "montage" pages; two spreads with tons of little images coming together until there isn't any white space left.

My favorite book on the subject of John Chapman (yes, we're related), also known as Johnny Appleseed. This book has recently gone out of print, so snatch a copy of you can while it's still around. Not only is this filled with facts about Mr. Appleseed and his life but Steven Kellogg's illustrations are perfect.
