When I first saw the cover of this book I didn't think I was going to be very impressed by the artwork inside. But I liked it a little better than I was expecting - sort of van Gogh-esque. But Caldecott worthy? I'm not so sure.....
So, while I was reasonably impressed with the illustrations, I wasn't entirely won over by the 'story'. I like that it validates children's feelings of anger (that is important), but it doesn't do much beyond that. It doesn't really provide any coping mechanisms other...more

Wow, I love Molly Bang's use of color and line to depict Sophie's moods. When Sophie is really, really angry she is surrounded by vibrating lines of red and purple and it appears she is going to explode! But then she runs and runs out in the forest and the colors change to greens, browns, and finally blues. The pictures do such a great job of conveying not only the storyline, but the emotions, that the words are almost completely unnecessary. A great book to encourage discussions about emotions...more
This is my 3-year-old daughter's new favorite book. She is enthralled by how angry Sophie gets, yet her choice is to run. Please note that when Sophie kicks, she doesn't connect with anyone. But she is spitting mad and her biggest release is to run hard and fast and commune with nature. My daughter is fixated on why it is that Sophie cries after she is so angry. This a beautiful way to capture that anger is actually hurt. Resolution is critical to a young reader. My daughter loves how Sophie pai...more

Summary: A 2000 Caldecott Honor book about a little girl with big temper, but who eventually calms down.
Response: Amazing, brilliantly colored illustrations help tell the story of Sophie’s mood. I think students, especially primary, would be attracted the bold illustrations and realistic image of how one feels when they are mad.
Possible Units: Character Ed: How to Deal with Feelings/Emotions. Art: Color, Line

Sophie shows a lot of aggression in this book and animation of how your mood can not only affect you but others around you. Children have to know their different emotions to be able to explain then to others for others to understand. Sophie was a little violent when she was yelling, running away and taking toys away from others. That behavior shows children the wrong behavior but us as educators teach and provide activities to help those behaviors and show right from wrong. Also, the animation i...more
"When Sophie Gets Angry -- Really, Really Angry" is a book written and illustrated by Molly Bang. This story picture book tells the story of a little girl named Sophie with some serious anger problems. When her sister gets to have a turn with the toy gorilla, Sophie throws a temper tantrum. She kicks and screams, she is "like a volcano waiting to erupt," and eventually she runs away into the woods until she calms down.

"When Sophie Gets Angry--Really, Really, Angry" is a book about a young girl by the name of Sophie. She is busy playing with a toy gorilla when her sister takes it from her as it is now her turn to play with the gorilla. Sophie gets very very angry and throws a fit. She screams and then runs far away and later becomes calm and is able to return home. The book is a good read for students to hear as it relates a messages of how children need to learn to share. When Sophie Gets Angry -- Really, Really Angry , written and illustrated by Molly Bang, was an interesting book. It showed children emotions that they could relate to and had colorful illustrations that would be engaging, but I did not like the book. I thought it was slightly ridiculous to insinuate to children that it is okay to run off into the woods and climb a tree when they are upset. I also didn't think it was a good example that Sophie didn't get any type of punishment of talking to after...more

Molly Bang's Caldecott Honor winning story, "When Sophie Gets Angry--Really, Really Angry," is a wonderfully illustrated picture book, in which it follows a young girl named Sophie, out into the woods when she becomes upset. The plot is that Sophie's sister takes a toy away from her, to which Sophie becomes "really, really angry," and leaves her house. She hikes her way into a serene setting with trees, flowers, and the wind blowing gently through her hair. The calm of the atmosphere settles Sop...more

I think Molly Bang got if just right, children have to deal with situations that might cause them to be angry, this is a part of life. Sophie didn't want to share and she just about exploded. All the colors in the illustrations catch everyone of Sophie's emotions brilliantly. I like the idea that she took herself out of the situation and ran outside. When I was little I would go in my room and punch my pillows until I felt better. I like that Sophie goes outside and her environment makes her fee...more
When a classmate read the book to the class in Language and Literacy, it was the first time I heard this story.Children always have a hard time learning how to deal with emotions. This is a perfect way for you to teach your class about anger. The first part I like about the book is they use the word angry instead of mad. Teaching children new vocabulary is always a plus. When Sophie gets angry shes finds a quiet place to calm down. Showing children the right way to deal with anger is so importan...more

This is a great book to read to children at the beggining of the school year. It has a great way of explaining the feeling of anger to young children. Children can relate to Sophie in this book because they have all gotten angry before but after hearing this story they will possibly have a better understanding of it. I also like how Sophie finds a place that calms her down. This helps children to maybe think of places they can go to calm down when they are angry. I also like the way they use the...more
The end pages of this book suggest that it will be an emotionally charged book. The contrast between the bright red and bright yellow almost hurts my eyes. The font is playful and suggests that this will be a story for young children. All of the illustrations throughout the story, with the exception of the cover, are full-bleed. This helps young readers feel more involved in the story and connect more strongly to Sophie. The illustrations have a fairly low modality. The bold outlining around the...more

The illustrations in this book were very creative. The illustrater used colors that symbolizes with the mood of the book. When Sophie was very angry the illustrater used very bright reds, yyellows and orange. When sophie calmed down, the illustrator used calmer colors such as blues, purples and greens. I liked that the illustrator drew Sophie in very serene, relaxing places when she calmed down.

When Sophie Gets Angry-Really, Really Angry is a great book to help students begin to learn how to deal with anger and how to calm themselves down. The story begins with Sophie sitting by herself playing with her stuffed gorilla until her sister desides to take it from her. This makes Sophie angry! She stomps and screams and thows a tantrum until she runs outside. As she walks through the forest, she begins to calm down. She climbs a tree and looks out at the ocean and realizes that she is no...more
Molly Bang captivates children preschool-grade 2 through language and vibrant colors as she reveals the drama of a child’s emotions after her sister takes away her stuffed gorilla. With few words, children are left to look at the picture to get the full effect of how Sophie’s emotions are throughout the entire books. When Sophie’s mother agrees that it is her sisters turn with the toy she gets so angry that she runs away. She runs and runs and runs until she reaches a beech tree. As she sits in...more

When Sophie has to give up her stuffed gorilla to her sister, she gets really, REALLY angry and has to find a way to deal with her anger.
The thick, bright colors are eye-catching, but the most interesting aspect of the art is the way Bang uses outlines to show mood. When Sophie is angry, the outline around her turns red, as do the outlines around things nearest to her (the cat, reacting to Sophie’s angry roar, for instance). When Sophie calms down a little and cries a bit, her outline is tinted...more

This is a great story about a little girl who gets infuriated about her little brother taking her toy. The little brother not only snatches it form her, but her mother agrees that it is his turn to play with it. She is already upset about this situation when she trips over a truck. She is so angry that she has to do something to help calm her down. She goes for a long run to help regather her thoughts. She then describes relaxing outside, climbing a tree, and looking at the water to help her fee...more
The illustrations in this are great, and most kids can relate pretty well to Sophie. I found, however, that while they relate to Sophie's temper tantrum at the beginning of the book, Sophie's solution to it -- to run into the woods and be alone for a while -- doesn't really scan with West Philadelphia preschoolers. They honestly don't seem to get it. Probably if Sophie went up to her room to be alone or hid in her closet or something, it would make more sense to them...

I think this is a book that could be used to teach young children how to control their anger when they get upset and when something does not go their way. This book has good illustrations that shows how Sophie started off being really, really, angry and calming down after running away from home. I actually liked this book.

"When Sophie gets angry- Really, Really, Angry" is a book written by Molly Bang. This story was a Caldecott honor book in 2000. This book has really a lack of plot line- the young girl gets angry, then leaves her house to run, and comes back where everything is okay. I feel like this story is VERY unrealistic to a child reader. The children should share and most children do not just get up and run away from there house at such a young age. The story was short and could hold a students attention...more
This book is an excellent way to talk to children about their feelings and emotions. It depicts a girls feelings when she is angry. Sometimes children are angry but do not understand their emotions and resort to destructive ways of expressing them. This book brings out the fact that it is alright to be angry and let out your feelings. However we must find some activity to do when we are angry that will help us calm down. This book also could be used to help children understand the importance of...more
This book had a lot of great pictures throughout the book that illustrated everything that was in the tex.t The pictures also made the book very interesting. The big words that was written in big letters across the pictures was also really great. The book describes a familiar situation that pretty much happens every day in the kidergarten. The anger that Sophie feels when her sister takes away her gorilla is something the children can recognize. Sophie runs away from home in anger, but while she...more
I did not care for Sophie because I thought she was violent and set a bad example for children. When Sophie does not get her way she cries, screams, gets really angry and then runs away. I think this message tells children they can run away from their problems without being repremanded for their behvior. When Sophie returns after running away her family is happy she is back and their is no punishment. I just found this to be a bad message for children.
