I was inspired to read this book from a section of the book Bethune by Adrian Clarkson. She described Jean Ewan as an unconventional nurse for the 30s. She was adventurous, outspoken, skilled and dedicated to working with the Chinese. During her 4 years in China before she worked there with Bethune she became fluent in Chinese. Upon her return with Bethune she met Mao and worked for 4 months with Bethune. Bethune's arrogance, misogyny and rigidity about the role of nursing resulted in her ...more
