Our whole family really enjoyed reading this book together. We loved Karma Wilson's Bear Snores On and others in that series, so we were not surprised that this book contained the elements we loved in those books. The rhymes and rhythms are simply fun to read and fun to listen to. This book has the added bonus of being about baking a ridiculously gigantic chocolate cake. Who could resist that topic, especially a 3-year-old boy who loves baking and eating sweets and who loves silly verse? The rea...more
The story is cute enough, but I really grabbed the book because of the cake recipe at the end. The kids and I love to try out recipes from books that they have read. Recipes are science experiments, after all.
We made the cake and I have to up my review to 4 stars. It was wonderful! And easy to make. I followed the recipe to a "T", even using cake flour. I did use dark chocolate powder, which is advisable with cakes in order to have a good chocolate flavor (milk chocolate tends to get smothered b...more

The book fits with the Sweet Treats theme for the Book Time, especially as it will take place in July just like the book does. But I don't think I'd be able to read it well enough for a story time. I may have to book talk it instead. I like that there is a cake recipe in the back. But I'll admit that my favorite part of the book was the names of the two characters. Silly, I know. But my recently passed away great-grandparents had us call them Grandma and Granddad. They're the only grandparents w...more

A funny story told in verse.
"Today is Grandma's birthday,
and Granddad has an itchin'
to bake a whopper chocolate cake
and traumatize the kitchen."
And bake and traumatize he does! Soon the ingredients ("two cups of sugar ain't enough. I'll put in twenty-three") outgrow Grandma's largest bowl and Granddad ends up using the bed of his pickup truck for a bowl and an oar to stir the batter. Granddad's voice is funny and the illustrations are colorful and amusing. It's nice to see active and energetic...more

I'm a Karma Wilson fan, and this book is a worthy addition to her repertoire. My only real complaint about this funny and read-aloud-friendly book is the presence of the parenthetical comments at the end of some stanzas. They break up the rhythm, and I think the story/verse works just as well without them. (So I read it out loud without the parenthetical comments....) Some may find the grandma's comment "I swear" to be a little less than satisfactory.
It's Grandma's birthday and Granddad thinks he needs to cook her one whopper of a cake. He gets a little carried away and finds himself with a huge cake in a really strange place! But with some help of friends and neighbors they are ready just in time for Grandma's return home and all of them enjoy the delicious surprise! Happy Birthday Grandma! There is also a yummy recipe for your own whopper cake in the back of the book. Enjoy!
Your preschoolers and kindergartners will love this book! When sweet old granddad decides to bake a "whopper cake" for grandma, he means it! Trading a bowl for a truck bed and a spoon for an oar, silly granddad creates a cake big enough to feed the whole town! The rhymes were sweet--not forced at all (a la the marvelous Karma Wilson!), and the kids giggled and grinned their way through this book. What fun!
Today is Grandma's birthday and Grandpa is ready to bake her a cake. He doesn't want just any cake for Grandma, but a whopper cake! Children have such fun listening to the amount of ingredients he adds to the cake and then baking it in a pickup bed tops it off! Illustrations are colorful and fun. Recipe for a whopper cake is included in the back. My 1st graders really enjoyed this story.
Saw this pop up and realizes as much as I love Karma Wilson I'd never actually picked this one up and read it.
Karma Wilson is so much fun. Her rhymes feel real and not forced. The story is adorable. Will Hillenbrand did a great job with the illustrations.
And did I mention there is a recipe at the end? Which I know REALLY WANT to make 'cause chocolate whopper cake sounds so good. :]

Mommy says: It's not easy to find a book that features two main characters over the age of 70 who are funny and quick. Books featuring grandparents are often schmaltzy and corny. But Karma Wilson's Whopper Cake has two great characters full of personality and activity and a very sweet story to go with them. Would make a sweet gift for a loving grandparent couple in your life.
Prepare to giggle with your child as Granddad and his friends prepare a giant birthday treat in this tall tale told in rhyme.
Every year, Granddad bakes a birthday cake for Grandma, but this time no ordinary cake will do - - he is going to bake a whopper cake!
A recipe for whopper cake is included.

This is one of my favorite Karma Wilson stories. The text is more in depth, she uses rhyming wonderfully, and Will Hillenbrand's illustrations are awesome. I love the fact that he purposely made the grandpa to look like Eric Carle.
We are going to try the cake recipe at the end, we just havent gotten around to it yet.

Granddad is going to make a whopper chocolate cake for Grandma's birthday, but this is going to be the best cake ever! She tells him not to fuss, but he can't seem to help himself and ends up making enough cake for the entire town. There are a couple of miracles in the story (the cake bakes on the way to town in the back of the truck, for example), and folks reading it may have a hankering to hear the Beverly Hillbilly's theme song, but the rhyming is cute, the idea is fun and there's a recipe i...more
This book is a delight! (Delightfully yummy, that is...) This book would be excellent to use when a review of measurements are needed. The book follows a recipe, which involves cups and teaspoons. They also mention measuring the whopper cake. You can review with your students what to use to measure length and volume.
This is a silly tale about a man who wants to celebrate his wife's birthday in style...with a whopper of a cake. The proportions are enormous and the cake is legendary. It's a fun story to read aloud.

Karma Wilson grew up an only child of a single mother in the wilds of North Idaho. Way back then (just past the stone age and somewhat before the era of computers) there was no cable TV and if there had been Karma could not have recieved it. TV reception was limited to 3 channels, of which one came in with some clarity. Karma did the only sensible thing a lonely little girl could do…she read or pl...more
