Jessica is in a pseudo witness protection program, but she just won her first high profile case and is now all over the news. Her ex Mark is assigned to keep her safe, he still wants to be with her, and she wants to kill him. Jessica gets a spot on the legal team and she can’t get over how the victim of a rape recanted on the stand. She thinks the witness has been threatened and she can’t let it go. The woman who she replaced, who just up and married, has her worried to. Jessica gets attacked by...more

First thing's first: This book is a sequel, but not to a book that called for a sequel. It's the sequel to a book I basically liked, and has managed to ruin any fond memories I might have harbored. Jessica and Mark had a nice little adventure in Pursuit after Jessica survived a car crash that killed the first lady of the US. They ran away from some bad guys, nearly got killed a few times, had some steamy sex, and got together at the end. It wasn't brilliant, but I enjoyed it.

Then I Picked up thi...more

I was disappointed with this one. At first I thought it would be interesting to read a follow-up book by K.Robards. Sadly I was let down by the fact that the two main characters of the previous book (Pursuit) had ended their relationship and were no longer together at the start of this book. So this was like history repeating itself. If they got together or not at the end of the book was irrelevant to me, because I have no faith it would remain that way. By the end of this story I didn't much li...more

Jess Ford has just won a high profile case -- the son of s senator was accused of rape. They seemed to be in trouble when the "victim" recanted on the stand. She should be celebrating but she saw Tiffany being accosted on the street and Jess believes she is in trouble. On her way home, Jess is mugged and if not for the intervention of her former boyfriend and FBI agent Mark, she probably wold be dead. Mark and Jess think this attack might have something to do with what brought them together in t...more

I read Justice because I really enjoyed one of Robards's other novels--Shattered--which surprised me, because from the cover it looked like a very trashy book (and I didn't think the book was trashy at all!). However, I was mostly disappointed by Justice, which was the quintessential trashy womens' novel.

I would love to try and do a count of how many times Robards describes character Mark Ryan's chest as "broad" or "wide." My head was screaming, "give me a break!" the whole time I was reading t...more

First off I want to say that I have marked this under my "Ghost" shelf and "cheating hero" shelf, though the ghost didn't play that big of a part in the story (she didn't solve any misteries, talk to anyone and barly made an apperence). Not being real big on the ghost theme myself I was kinda worried when it first made an apperence however I think that Karen Robards played nice and light. The cheating part was in thier past and the h had walked in on the H kissing another woman, to some people re...more

drey’s thoughts:
Karen Robards’ Justice is a gripping read that you will not be able to put down. It starts off with a woman getting killed while two teenagers are hiding under her bed. And moves to a courtroom scene where Jess is surprised by the outcome because, well, she’s absolutely certain her client is actually guilty.

Then danger shows up on her doorstep. Literally. And Jess has to figure out who’s trying to kill her, and why. Luckily she has Mark to watch out for her, and luckily he has s...more

A suspenseful book that will keep you turning pages till the end as you try to figure out who the "bad guy" is. Jessica Ford is an attorney with a prestigious DC law firm and Mark Ryan is a Secret Service agent who has been assigned as her bodyguard. Jessica is the only surviving passenger in the First Lady's car as it crashed. She is not too keen on Mark as her bodyguard as they had previously been involved, but, as attacks on her life continue, she's glad that he's there. Are the attacks relat...more

I really loved this book, actually. It was thrilling, sexy, romantic and had a great ending. I actually read this before the first book, but I was sooo quick to catch up on it. Karen Robards made it easy to understand, and has great characters and vocab.

Good points:

the protective love interest
A strong, capable lady main character
Great vocab and easy-to-follow story line
Great characters
The steamy love scene

Bad points:

The sentences were WAY too long! I mean, how many commas can you actually put in...more

This was a good, twisting read! Jess is supposed to be keeping a low profile because as the only witness to a major murder, she doesn't need the media attention. The problem is with her first big win at a new firm, she is photographed along with the whole defense team. This media attention brings Mark back into her life. Mark is her ex boyfriend and also the secret service agent who has been assigned to protect her. Questions start piling up like why did the victim recant on the stand? Was she f...more

This is Robards' second book in the Jessica Ford series. The story line is similar to the first: somebody wants Jessica Ford dead. In the first book, Jessica is protected by Secret Service Agent Mark Ryan, and along the way of unraveling the mystery in the first book, Jessica and Mark fall in love.

In the second book, we learn that Jessica and Mark are no longer together, but because someone (again) wants Jessica dead, Mark is there to protect her once again. I admit that I did not care for the a...more

This is the first book by Karen Robards that I've read. I picked it up at a book trading event, without realizing it was the sequel to another book, "Pursuit". It was a quick read, and somewhat disppointing. The relationship between main character Jessica and FBI agent Mark was interesting, but makes more sense now that I have some idea of what transpired in the previous book. (No spoilers to be given here!)I have scanned some of the reviews of Robard's other books and will likely try another,"S...more

This one was disappointing. I really enjoyed the previous book about Jess and Mark (Pursuit) but this kind of ruined it for me. They were broken up at the start (which took away the happy ending from Pursuit) and even though they get back together I now have absolutely no faith they will stay that way. I read romance because i want a HEA not realism. And I can't get past why they broke up. I have no faith in Mark. The author tried to make it like it was mostly Jess's issues that were keeping the...more

After listening to an hour of the newly released Justice, I was wondering more about the TSTL behavior of heroine Jessica Ford than the plot. She’s in the Secret Service’s witness protection program (of sorts) after witnessing the murder of the First Lady. Now that she is established with her new identity, she only takes the slightest of precautions and has more an attitude of “Why are you making me do this?” than anything else. But I digress because this is one good roma...more

Justice begins with a woman dying, two young runaways being the only witnesses, and an unexpected conclusion to a rape trial. Jess is a young, hard-working lawyer that is moving up in the ranks of the law firm where she works as she has just won a high profile case. But instead of celebrating Jess is trying to figure out why the prosecution's main witness recanted her story on the stand. With the help of her ex-boyfriend, Mark Ryan, Jess begins to investigate more into the case that she has just...more

Jessica, who works for a law firm just won a high profile case. She is walking home after fighting with her ex-boyfriend when she is attacked just outside of her apartment. Mark Ryan, her ex works for the secret services and he rescues her. Somehow the two events are linked and Jess has to figure out how before the killer gets to her.

I have to say that this book was pretty weak. The storyline was frustrating the plot was weak and the resolution even more so. It felt like a book that was written...more

3.2 ish. Very enjoyable overall. Good storytelling, I was certainly gripped by it although certain elements were very unbelievable. Can't really say which parts exactly without spoilers. Definitely mixed reactions - some of it great, some very poorly done. The opening chapters are excellent and I liked the Jess/Mark vibe but tired of Jess a little by the end. A little over-simplified in her terror with respect to relationships for one supposedly so high-powered and intelligent. It was my first R...more

Did not enjoy this #2 novel as much as I did #1 Pursuit which read a while back. The book leads off with a murder witnessed by two runaway girls. It then jumps to a trial continued from the first book. Jessica, criminal attorney has been in witness protection program since the witness to First Lady’s murder. Her secret service agent Mark (ex-boyfriend) is cool, but Jess is drama queen. She wins the case after the girl on the stand backs off from the rape case of the son of US senator. Goes back...more

Robards has written some great books and I count her as a favorite author. Sadly, Justice fell flat on its face and ended with a whimper. I didn't care for the feisty, impulsive heroine who should have been a whole lot smarter to have achieved the professional success Robards gave her. Also, I was pretty much constantly annoyed with the mangling of DC geography, its ethnicity, and its neighborhoods. One does not go tooling through Friendship Heights when traveling from College Park to Foggy Bott...more

Fast-paced, suspenseful read. Features 4 sisters, one of whom is in denial that she has the hots for the super good looking Secret Service agent her life gets entwined with. Twice the author gets a bit unrealistic, first with a ghostly apparition of a murder victim, and secondly with the notion that the main female is apparently only in love once, but the guy has not only gotten around before dating her, but cheated on her previously in their relationship, but she is expected to forgive and acce...more

"Justice" is a follow up of sorts to 2009's "Pursuit". We first met Jess and Mark in that book when Jess was the sole survivor of a car accident involving the First Lady of the US. You can read this book as a stand alone but I would suggest reading "Pursuit" first to get a handle on why exactly Jess and Mark believe that she is in danger in this book. I enjoyed this one more than I did "Pursuit".

Because of the events in "Pursuit" Jess is supposed to be keeping a low profile. She is in the Secret...more

3.75 stars very close to 4, but I had some kick-ass SR, this just missed it in comparison.

Loved the characters and the storyline. As Jessica trying to put her life together and working at a new law firm. Her publicity in winning a case took her out of hiding and into Mark's protection. What a deal!

Of course Jessica can never leave a stone unturn...or a mystery disappearance of a woman, or two alone. Of course all of this fast-pace chasing, hiding, fact finding, etc combined with Mark trying to...more

This book opens with Jessica Ford, the heroine of 'Pursuit,' in unofficial witness protection by the Secret Service. This consists of Jessica dying her hair blonde, swapping her glasses for contacts, and changing her name to Jessica Dean and continuing to practice law at a high profile law firm in her home town of Washington D.C.

Really?

Why not just put a target on her back and shout, "Come get her!" through a bullhorn from the top of the Washington Monument. But you know that won't happen. We ca...more

This is an edge-of-your-seat, keep-you-up-all-night, you-won't-want-to-walk-alone-in-a-dark-alley thriller!! Karen Robards novel is gripping, thrilling, and just too good to put down. With plot twists every turn, Robards intricately weaves several mysteries and murders into one cleverly organized story which will leave you engrossed trying to figure out who-did-it until the very end!

This is part of the Jessica Ford series, and both Jessica, and her hunky secret-service body guard Mark are extre...more

This book is absolutely gripping! It's only my second Karen Robards and I'll definitely be reading more!

Jessica Ford, a criminal lawyer, is under Secret Service protection, as she was the only witness to the First Lady of the US being killed in a car accident, deemed suspicious. But she refuses to 'go into hiding' choosing instead to change her appearance and get on with her life. Upon winning a high profile case, her photo was on the front page of the papers, and from then on, things began to g...more

I enjoyed this book up until the end when it seemed the author was bodysnatched by a lesser writer. Or maybe she hit a deadline and had to tidy it up real quick. Whatever, throughout the entire book we're reminded of how caring and compassionate the protagonist is, how strong her commitment to justice is. By the end, when called upon to make her biggest sacrifice she just sort of fizzles out. There's no explanation for her change in character just a sort of hasty conclusion to the action.

This one started off really, really exciting and I was into it. And then, when it got to the trial, things went downhill. Probably what frustrated me most was the long, drawn out sentences. There were parentheses inside parentheses and by the time you finally made it to the end of the sentence you had totally forgotten who was even being described. I don't mind sarcasm but it went overboard and took away from the story in my opinion.

I won this book in a Goodreads give away.

Who in what government agency was out to kill Jess for being in the car when the first lady was killed? There seemed to be so much back story that I wondered if this was second in a series.

I finished the book but I had to make myself. I was frustrated with Jess for being so smart and so stupid at the same time. She knows someone might want to kill her but she is not going to take any procautions no matter what.

And what was the ghost part doing in this bo...more

Great book from start to finish. I liked the main characters Jess & Mark. Their relationship was very interesting and complex. It was great to see them work on their amotions and feelings before acting on their sexual attraction.

The story was very engaging from the first murder of Alison to the last kill. I loved all the different characters in this story from the two young girls who have witnessed the first murder to the killer and the killer for hire.

I loved all the twists and turns and un...more
