I like John Fowles's work, so I must have bought this at a book sale in some distant past. I finally read it, and now I see why it has not been included among his best. He claims he wrote this based solely on a picture he had in his mind of a group of people traveling through an English wilderness is the early eighteenth century. I believe that. The plot (I use the term loosely) develops excruciatingly slowly.
Evidently Mr. Fowles couldn't make up his mind how to write the...more

john fowles may well be the strangest author i have read. this book is so totally original that it left me with the feeling that i dreamed having read it.

the plot defies explanation, and anyone who tells you it was boring didn't read the whole thing (if they had, they would have told you something to the effect that it was boring AND utterly bizarre).

I read this one over twenty years ago, so I don't recall details from it. But, I do remember that I loved it. It made absolutely no sense at times, but it was so darn mesmerizing that I couldn't stop reading it. Very weird and offbeat to say the least, but "A Maggot" will stick with you for a long time. It certainly has with me.

It's been quite awhile since I read this, but I still remember various scenes clearly. The book obviously was engaging. It had an interesting story idea, but the story development was weak. This is not Fowles' best book, but for readers who generally like Fowles, it would be an enjoyable read.

Oh, how tedious. This long historical novel is mostly question and answer recountings of an attorney's investigations into an 18th century death and disappearance. I skimmed the last 100 pages; the religious drivel bored me to tears. And I still don't know what _really_ happened to His Lordship.

I absolutely hated this book. Only finished it through sheer stubborness and determination. The book has an interesting premise......and almost pulls it off until the very end when it all disintegrates into a debate over Puritan and religious theology.
Bored me to tears.

very strange development of the narrative and the final analysis of the story is 'i'm not sure what he was on when he wrote this book but it must have been something very strong'. All in all I enjoyed the book, but still get a frown on my forehead when I think about it!

Weird, Weird, Weird book. Starts out with a group of mismatched travelers, archetypes, who are traveling to a point that's unrevealed until they arrive. I can't really say anymore without giving anything away.

An interesting literary exercise, with quite a twist or two. I found it a bit tedious at first, but eventually got into it.

A weird attempt at science fiction by a non-science fiction author, but strangely fascinating.

Literature disguised as Medieval sci-fi. Or how a llama can be described as a horse.
