Where oh where to begin? Pride & Prejudice is one of my favorite novels and I just love Texas (best state ever!), so when my mom gave me this book to use for my senior project, I was more than thrilled.

The characters were excellently depicted and had many aspects to them that made them incredibly realistic. The setting was perfect. I lovehow the checkpoints with the play they are working on coincide withthe events as they occur.

A lot of the little details are what made this book so compara...more

I mostly enjoyed this book as it had engaging characters, good moral lessons, a bit of romance and all without profanity or sex. The story revolved around the very rich Dave Davidson, who is not exactly who he proclaims to be, and Eddi, an independent female lawyer trying to make a go of it in a small town in Texas. They are drawn together as actors in a production of Pride & Prejudice. They seem to find more to dislike about each other but are forced to continually see each other because of...more

An okay story that relies too much on its inspiration to ever be anything more.

First Impressions by Inspirational author Debra White Smith uses the classic story of Pride and Prejudice to give it life. The characters, plot and language are all meant to present a more modern take of Jane Austen's early 1800s work. It was definitely more modern in how all of the relationships developed and with depicting each of the Bennett/Boswick sisters' roles in life. What didn't work so great was the author's...more

Eddi Boswick knows Jane Austen's Pride& Prejudice from cover to cover- she wrote her senior thesis on it, after all. She's recently opened a law practice in London, Texas and was immediately drawn into the small town circle by Mrs. DeBloom- who is currently in the process of planning a performance of the much beloved book in the local theatre. Eddi enjoys interacting with the group- except for Mrs. DeBloom's irritating nephew, Dave Davidson.
The pair are somewhat at odds from the beginning,...more

The story itself is very enjoyable. I was expecting it to follow the Pride and Prejudice characterizations and storyline more closely. After I was about 50 pages into this book, I thought, "This isn't really Pride and Prejudice..." About the only things in common are two main characters who have injured each other's pride (one of whom is very rich); a sister and friend of those two falling into love quite quickly; and a younger sister who's a flirt. This book never leaves any doubt that the hero...more

Well... I don't know what to say. It was an easy and really fast reading. I'm a great fan of Jane Austen, so I've read some of this adaptations. It took me some time to grow to love the characters, and really, I'm not sure I did after all... It's like they weren't so interesting, just a pastiche of the actual characters... they even quoted pride and prejudice, A LOT, and I didn't really like that so much. Don't get me wrong, I liked the book, it was romantic, I could have fallen in love with the...more

I really enjoyed this book. The only thing that threw me was at about the 3/4 point when the aunt tells Eddie that she's not good enough for her nephew. I know this happens in P&P, but the aunt in P&P rather looks down on Elizabeth from the beginning, whereas in this book the aunt never does that to Eddie ... also, it doesn't happen in P&P until very near the end. That part just seemed like the author threw it in, when it really could have been done differently and/or in a different...more

This was just a fun read that was rather light and clean. It wasn't like some of the other Christian romance books that I've read. The characters weren't put through a whole bunch of deeply spiritual experiences that helped them realize God does exist. Theses characters already knew that and simply lived it as if it were a natural part of their lives which was nice. Gotta admit I loved the ending of the book. It was perhaps a little cheesy and sappy but it was still wonderful!!

A book based on Pride and Prejudice with all of the main characters in play. It all seemed a little contrived to fit the original. Clean but not that great of a read. (I'm on a Knock off of Austen kick, b/c the library had a table full of all of the Austen knock offs out right now. If you had to compare it to the Pride and Prejudice movies that have come out, this book was like the movie that came out in 2003 and was set in Provo, UT...)

This was a kind-of-fun Pride and Prejudice (P&P) wannabe book, with a P&P backdrop too. It was kind of wierd having the story being told twice, once in the P&P play the characters were preparing and putting on, AND in the characters themselves. I found myself needing to continue reading it, but rolling my eyes at the story line.

In the end, I liked the Christian lessons it told, including the value of life (an abortion is avoided), and the importance of people over money, and other l...more

This book was not my favorite of her Austen series. I like her others much better. This one kind of annoyed me. I know others have enjoyed it so maybe it is just me. I didn't enjoy the double plot in the book. The characters are the same as in Jane Austen's, just in the 20th century. I enjoyed them and their humorous bantering. I just didn't enjoy that they were also playing roles in a play of the real book Pride and prejudice and they just happened to be playing the same role as their real life...more

Didn't finish it. I thought it was supposed to be about a town putting on a Jane Austin play but it ended up being a complete remake of Pride and Prejudice. The characters names all started with the same letters anthe mother was just as obnoxious. There was even the 'viilan' who lies about 'Darcy'. I am too much a fan of the original so I couldn't keep reading. Sorry:(

Well... I am a little embarrassed to admit reading this type of book normally, but this one was very cute. Smith's unique spin on this plot, and her ability to find a modern equivalence to the scandal of Lydia and Mr. Wickham, was well done, and highly readable. This makes for good light-reading and also sheds some new perspectives on the original Pride and Prejudice.

Ok. Love Austen! However, I couldn't figure out why the characters didn't see a correlation in their own lives and the play they had roles in. Found myself sifting through the slow predictable parts and thoroughly enjoying other parts. That being said I LOVED the ending! As a whole 3 stars but that ending is worth 5!

This was an interesting book. But only for people who REALLY like Pride and Prejudice. It was almost overkill. The characters in the book not only directly correlated to the characters in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, they were also playing those characters in a Pride and Prejudice dinner theater play. Yeah. A bit much. It was clean, though, and a good escape for a while!

i really enjoyed this book. Since it was Pride and Prejudice set in modern times (while the characters were also performing Pride and prejudice in a local communite theater) the outcome of the story was a given. However, I liked the characters and the story line as she updated it.

This was my absolute favorite book in this series. The only thing...she went a bit drastic on "Lydia's" character...in my opinion, at least. But the love story...<3 It had the right amount of drama, then they got together. Overall, it was amazing!!!!

Beware, the story is a Pride and Prejudice reworking but this is a ministry book- the author is trying to make religious points through the whole thing. It is very judgemental regarding each character's faith and relationship with 'God'... the Darcy character's parents fought a lot but were co-pastors of a church, his own redeeming feature is that he is founding a ministry to mentor troubled young boys like his childhood foster cousin- Rick (Wickham) who dabbled in drugs and premartial sex. I loved this book!!! Being the Jane Austen fan that I am, Pride and Prejudice is my favorite. This puts a very fun, modern spin on it and I was glued to the book for most of the day. I highly recommend it.

This is the first book in Debra White Smith's Austen Series. It is a modern day version of Pride and Prejudice, set in small town Texas. This is my favorite of White's Austen series.

I am not a Jane Austen fan at all so have never read her books or watched the movies. Having said that, I'm sure I missed a lot... But I did really enjoy the story and look forward to reading more of this series.

I think it's fine that they do a play together but I think it's weird that they do P&P. I also wish Ms Smith would use her own dialogue rather than having the characters occasionally quote P&P dialogue to each other. That was just plain cheesy.
Buffer
These are modern takes on Jane Austen novels. They are total "fluff" reads but fun and quick. It was funny to see how closely the characters follow the original work.
Alyssa
A Christian/modern rendition of the Jane Austen classic. Despite it's Christian viewpoint, the novel still retains the wit, comedy and suspense that Austen fans love.
Wendy Poole
Modernized Pride & Prejudice story. I liked how the modern characters were involved in the P/P play at the same time the story was happening in their own lives.
Teri
This is a current take on Pride and Prejudice. The writing is a little "cheesy." It is a love story after all, but as I read some of it aloud to my husband we laughed out loud and declared it of the spray can variety of cheese. Have your crackers ready. I still liked it and thought it followed Pride and Prejudice fairly close. There were a few changes here and there. I liked the guide at the front of the book to tell you which character coincided with the Pride and Prejudice character. The story...more

My friend Carol who is an Austen fanatic, recommended this book to me. She warned me it is cheesy and she was right. But it was a fun re-telling of Pride & Prejudice. Chick lit.
Angie
It was a fluff-fun-read. I could see this being made into a Hallmark Channel movie.
