This is the first novel of a poet. It doesn't disappoint. In many ways, it's like an extended short story. Everything connects. I didn't notice a word out of place.

Set in contemporary Scotland, the central character has just lost his job working for a pharmaceutical company. That's significant but it takes a long time to realise why. More obviously, his marriage seems to be in trouble and, near the start of the narrative, his little girl is nearly killed by a careless driver.

This novelette (too long to be a short story, too short to be a novella) is set in (or rather, around) London over a single day, with flashbacks to a tedious childhood and adolescence in Scotland. The main character, the appropriately dull-sounding Gray (short for Graham), has a row with his wife, whom he may or may not be in the process of leaving, drags his daughter off for a fun-filled trip to the recycling bins at the local supermarket, on the way to which the kid almost gets run over by ...more
