This choose-your-own-adventure populated by characters, settings and decisions faced by Jane Austen heroines is a very enjoyable read.
The book includes instructions so the reader can keep track of their Intelligence and Confidence points, Accomplishments and Failings and Superior and Inferior Connections. I chose to, although the book assured me it wasn't mandatory. I enjoyed the aspect of crossing out points every time I cursed my lucky stars and rejoicing when I answered the occasional m...more

If you were one of those kids who loved the Choose Your Own Adventure books, you might find this grown-up version irresistible. It's basically a retelling (often a line-for-line reprinting) of Pride and Prejudice. As you progress through the story, you gain and lose points in several categories, and at key plot points you are allowed to make choices. If you aren't fairly familiar with the original, your choices might send you off into the universe of Emma or Sense and Sensibility or another Aust...more

I admit it. I loved the 'choose your own adventure' books when I was younger. So, naturally, I had to try a choose your own adventure through Pride and Prejudice. You are Elizabeth Bennet, and as you progress, you keep track of your fortune, confidence, skills, and so on, which are added to or taken away from, depending upon what choices you make as you make your way through the book. To accept a proposal, your score has to be high enough, so these choices matter.

This is a choose-your-own-adventure type book in which you are Elizabeth Bennett from Pride and Prejudice and your goal is to marry both for love and money. There are some pitfalls along the way as you are led not only through the realms of P&P but also face encounters with characters from other Jane Austen novels. I thought this sounded like fun until I started reading it... it is basically a re-telling of P&P and if you deviate from the obvious paths, you die a horrible death or end up...more

I’m not a fan of the published fan fiction I see based on Jane Austen’s works (she was never copyrighted). However, I absolutely LOVE this book. It’s not really fan fiction; It’s a game. You like games, right? You’re boring if you don’t like them, silly. This book is very true to the works of Jane Austen, while entertaining us. Your mission in the game is to marry for love, but still have some sort of good income. You basically read the book (no kidding!) and you answer questions, e...more

I wasn't expecting much from this title and I was not disappointed. It lived down to my expectations.
As 'choose your own adventure' books go, it might not have been so bad except for the excessive amount of other things you have to keep track of, such as list of accomplishments, fortune points, confidence points, etc. Then there's the little quiz that pops up now and then, such as how many couples face each other when dancing a reel, which really don't affect your path at all, although they ...more

How much can one book contain for an Austen fan! You actually get to BE Lizzie Bennet! THE Miss Elizabeth Bennet...and create your own story!
Remember those books when you were kids, the puzzle books where you would read a page or two and then have to make a decision, and the page would direct you to another chapter depending on what decision you make. Well this book is that ONLY...set in Austen.
Seriously....uber overload of Regency bliss in one little book of Austen genius.

This is the most creative and funny Austen take off I've ever read and I've read quite a few. It is in the format of a choose-your-own-adventure book (a brilliant genre, if there ever was one) and allows you to rack up "Fortune," "Confidence" and "Intelligence" points as well as connections, failings and accomplishments based on your decisions and knowledge of regency trivia. You start off as Elizabeth Bennet but depending on your decisions can land in storylines ...more

This is a choose-your-own-adventure based on the work of Jane Austen! Yes it's true! I would have liked this more if "I" were an unnamed heroine and were not so pigeon-holed into reliving the choices of Elizabeth Bennet, if I had more opportunities to live happily ever after with Mr. Knightley or Mr. Lefroy, if there were more choices to make and questions to answer, or if more of my options related to the (few and far-between) accomplishments I'd managed to acquire (by the end of the ...more

This book was SO MUCH FUN! It got me through a very bad day with strep throat.
It's just like the choose-your-own-adventure books from your youth (or your children's youths), except you get to be Elizabeth Bennett. Depending on your choices, you'll see characters from all of Jane Austen's works as well as people she knew herself. Everything is expertly woven together and so many times I found myself laughing out loud, especially when my carriage ran over Mr. Elton (from Emma) in his effort to s...more

This is a "chose you're own adventure book" except for the fact that you're following the story of Pride and Prejudice so there really aren't a lot of places for decisions. There is also a "score" aspect to the story (game?) where some quizzes (which I enjoyed), random bits of story (which you have no control over) and the occasional decision alter Lizzys Fortune, Accomplishments, Failings, Connections, Confidence or Intelligence. Supposedly at the end your score will deter...more

This is remarkably adorable - I played with it in the store, although I did not keep track of my score. (Yes, there's score keeping. *g*) I did some quick skim throughs, although it's set up for a longer story. Your mission: Marry up, but for love. In my attempts, I managed to kill Mr. Elton (FAIL), get killed by Caroline Bingley (crushed by a carriage - FAIL) and get married to Mr. Darcy. Except we didn't really get along, I ended up having an affair with one of his servants, and we became the ...more

This book is fun and interactive. Essentially, you are playing Choose Your Own Adventure within the set of Pride & Prejudice. Your goal, of course, as a young victorian gal of minor means but excellent spirit, is to land yourself a dashing and well-to-do hubby. You are given 5 basic categories with which to keep score: Confidence, Intelligence, Social Connections, Wealth, etc. As you move along in the story, you gain or lose points. And just like with the Choose Your Own Adventure books, you...more

This is a MUST for anyone who either enjoyed the old Create Your Own Adventure series or is a Jane Austen fan or both (which I am). If you are familar with the series you know how it works, you have to make a choice and from that you pick a page and find your fate. You are Elizabeth Bennet for this story, from Pride and Prejudice and your goal is to marry for love. There is also the bonus challenge of keeping track of points for your good fortune among other things which count for decisions t...more

This was great fun! I've always been a fan of the 'Choose Your Own Adventure' books and this is written and set up the same way. I thought it was pretty neat how the author used the actual 'Pride and Prejudice' story (even the dialogue was spot on!), but also wove in storylines from Austen's other novels or authors she was influenced by. She even added notes to let you know where the diverging storyline came from.

After watching The Jane Austen Book Club and realizing that while I enjoyed the film, the idea of having to tolerate Prudie for more 'air time' than I did in the film, made reading that book seem like a bad idea. HOWEVER, it has made me realize I may be very much missing out on Austen herself, as (please no gasps and shunning here) I have never read any Austen myself. Instead of picking the first book I read based upon my opinion of the film, I thought I would ask the highly literate crowd joine...more

Despite this being a "create your own" adventure, generally you follow the plot of Pride and Prejudice rather closely. One of the only thing that separates this from a Cliffs Notes plot summary is the snarky inner voice leading you along different paths to various marriages (suitable and unsuitable). Oh, oh, and there are in-jokes about other Austen novels aplenty! It helps that this book was written by a Jane Austen scholar and actress, as the author's interpretation of events are spo...more

Not as much fun as it sounds - or even as much fun as I remember "Choose Your Own Adventure" books being as a kid.
If your Lizzy dares to make choices differently than Elizabeth Bennet herself would have made them, you can be sure some terrible fate awaits you on the next page. Side-plots involving characters from other Austen books have no point - and I was rather annoyed when I discovered in the last pages that it wasn't really necessary to faithfully "keep score" as ...more

This is a very fun Choose Your Own Adventure for Austenphiles and others. It is kind of a lot of work because you have to keep an elaborate score sheet. Just make sure you mark your place at important junctures so you can go back.
You are Elizabeth Bennet and you have to make wise decisions. If you are waaaaay too familiar with Pride and Prejudice, it's probably pretty easy to successfully navigate the book, but it's also fun to make a totally different decision than Lizzy would have.
