AH! I finally finished this entire text book. It was quite a struggle, but I feel accomplished.

I don't really have an opinion on this text book...it was long, it was historic, it was dry. Obviously, I wouldn't pick it up for some light reading.

I just had to comment that I read this text book cover to cover- it just had to be said.

My worst nightmare - sophomore year.

A History of Western Society Since 1300 9th edition is the longest book that I have read (1056 pages!). I took an AP History class and this was the textbook. I tried to keep up with the reading of the book as we went along in the chapters, and I actually was able to complete the whole textbook. It took some months, but it was well worth it. I am so glad I read this. This is a great book for an indepth look of European history. It doesn't just serve as a textbook. It covers everything: political,...more

The ninth edition of A History of Western Society has added two new authors who attempt to bring more women's and family history into the story. A necessary task, just not one particularly well done in this edition. Too often these details seem tacked on and sometimes they diminish what was the book's previous strengths. The section on Italian prostitutes inserted almost randomly into the portion of a chapter on Reformation ideas is a particularly horrible example of this lack of integration. Ho...more

The New History movement has greatly influenced this book. It waters down most materials, although it does at times read like a college text book. An extreme focus on Western Civilization leads the book in to the troubles of not defining Western Civilization in accordance with the rest of the world. Furthermore, the religion sections were heavily biased, especially those written about Christianity. I think a high school student could form a more impartial section on Christian religious elements...more

I never cease to grab this book for poignant information whether to win an argument with my husband or teach my children something about European History in relation to the world. I used this book often in my own collegiate studies and continue to use it even today!Definitely a favourite of mine!

This was a history textbook for one of my college courses. Its was from my first semester, so it is one of the few I sold back.
