That's the word that kept running through my head as I read this book. There is no doubt that author Gary Darby is intelligent. I was amazed over and over again at Darby's explanations of some fairly complex scientific subjects in the framework of the story. These explanations were done where they enhanced the story, and didn't detract from it. If anything, it gave the book a sense of credibility many sci-fi books lack.

That was another thing I enjoyed about this book. It was a scien

Del is a StarScout in training, a member of an intergalactic exploration guild. He has some serious issues to live up to, like his family name being tainted by his renegade father, and some people trying to use him to get back at said parent. The StarScout exams are also harsh, involving identifying and tracking dangerous animals. Add a possible mole feeding information to a faction that just might be kidnapping the Scouts for an unknown reason, and it's a very dangerous time to be training.

It seems like most science fiction I read is geared for adults - there may be adult issues and situations that wouldn't be appropriate for young teens. I think this is the first work of science fiction that I could recommend for the preteen set.

In Star Scout Rising, First Trail, the galaxy is opening up to human exploration. Some planets have been colonized and a Confederation has formed to police the ever changing space ways. The military handles human threats and the Star Scouts explore planet

The Golden Age of Science Fiction is 12. One of the reasons that I love SF is because, as a boy, I discovered Heinlein, Asimov, and Clarke in the back of the village library. I became addicted to anything with that Atom or Rocket Ship sticker on the spine of the book.
Today, my favorite SF books are still the Heinlein Juveniles like Farmer in the Sky or Have Spacesuit, Will Travel.
This is why I enjoyed Gary Darby’s book StarScout Rising: First Trail.
First Trail is the story of a group of teenag

Though it is a bit of a slow start, Star Scout Rising is a young adult science fiction novel that embraces action, aliens and all sorts of amazing adventures while not embracing the less favourable things about young adult books like an overload of swearing. The characters are many and it’s sometimes hard to remember which attributes are attached to which characters until you get to know them. However, getting to know them is part of the pleasure of the read.

I enjoyed Del’s maturity in this book

I loved this book. It took me on an unexpected adventure in Outer Space,
Star Date 2433.056 !!!

This book did that and it was quite an adventure.

The story takes place in the future and there are people living all over the universes. Space Flight is normal and different planets have been discovered all over. There are all kinds of different vegetation and animals on all the planets, some dangerous some harmless. The air or the water could have deadly parasites or particles in it that could kill hum
