5+ stars – Historical/Regency Romance

Words seem wholly inadequate, my friends. Why are the best books always the hardest to review?! Alas, if only I could have clever Lady Whistledown write this.

Flirtatious, affable, charming, and witty Colin has been my favorite Bridgerton sibling from the beginning, and I was most looking forward to his story, especially knowing that the strikingly handsome, popular bachelor was being paired with his sister’s sweet best friend, plump, unpopular, wallflower,...more

★★★★½ I read this when it first came out over ten years ago and remember loving Colin. Though I’m a bit of a “re-reader,” I haven’t done so. Consequently, I jumped at the chance to join in a “buddy read,” the forth in this enduring series.

However, on re-read I was really impressed with Penelope. Don’t get me wrong: I still had heart palpitations over Colin and his deep green eyes. Nevertheless, I appreciated Penelope’s subtle straight-forw...more

Penelope Featherington has been overlooked her entire life. She’s been told that she’s not pretty enough, too plump, too nervous and too quiet. And yet, Penelope probably has the most personality out of all her heroines in this series. Penelope is hands down my favourite heroine! I love seeing her growth as a character in the previous ones leading up to her own book, Romancing Mr Bridgerton with her long-time crush, Colin.

I wondered how Colin would redeem himself after...more

My Review:

What a fabulously fun read! I adored Colin and Penelope and especially Lady Danbury! Revisiting the rest of the Bridgerton family was truly a joy :)
Colin and Penelope make the perfect match and seeing close childhood friends grow into loving, adult soul mates was one of the greatest highlights in my reading adventures this year. I was smiling from the beginning to the end – laughing out loud and sighing often.

Another favorite! MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE IN THE SERIES!
Oh, this book made me so happy…

Seriously, JULIA QUINN CAN DO NO WRONG.

Anyway, Romancing Mister Bridgerton is Colin’s book, and I almost couldn’t believe who's his lady in this... let your jaws drop fellow readers, for she is the plainest of Janes, wallflower of wallflowers, ugly duckling, the one and only: Miss Penelope Featherington! (MY GOD) And I love her so! Even in the previous books as a minor character - my heart would ache for that poo...more

Dear Ms Quinn, I bow down to you and your Bridgerton series. You have created such an intricate family tree that I have no hope of ever forgeting about. After reading book four, I find I am quite addicted to your writting.

I really couldnt help but love every single page of this novel. The story of Colin and Penelope feels like it has been a long time coming. Penelope is not the "young" debutant that most tend to be. She is considered a...more

Another good one in the Bridgerton clan series. A big, juicy and totally shocking secret is revealed –at least I didn’t see it coming! It’s a shame the secret is discovered but I’m hoping for a “come back” in future books :)

Colin Bridgerton, Mr Suave, ends up being not so perfect after all and he falls in love with the very last person you’d expect if you’ve been following the series since book 1. Great story between the two of them, could have had a little more steam but the story itself is won...more

Penelope Featherington has been in love with Colin Bridgerton for what seems like forever, from a young girl making her debut in society to a resign spinster. Penelope feelings have only grown throughout the years for Colin. Thinking she knew everything about Colin there was to know, Penelope comes across his hidden secret that starts to change her perspective of him in a surprising way that only draws them closer.
Colin Bridgerton has always been the laid-back charmer of the family, but behind

”I am certainly not going to marry Penelope Featherington!”

Ever since we heard Colin Bridgerton utter, ummm, shout the above statement, we should have known that he’s going to eat his words sooner or later.

And eat them he did.

Penelope Featherington. She freshly comes out to society, out to meet the ton, with an excess of a few stones in her weight, and either orange/yellow/red gowns which doesn’t do her complexion any good. We can’t blame her. Her mother is a tyrant. But Penelope knows she does...more

Okay. Full disclosure before we even start this review:

1) Penelope Featherington is the queen of my heart.
2) Colin Bridgerton is bar none my absolute favorite male character in this entire series.
3) In the very first book, on like page 72 with absolutely no foreknowledge whatsoever, I decided that Colin and Penelope should get married.

So, you can imagine how I felt when it was time for me to read this book. And let me just say, it was everything I could have hoped for and more.

Rather disappointing read, especially since I enjoyed "An Offer from a Gentleman" so much. Got through it by sheer perseverance alone, not because I couldn't put the book down.

The dialogues and action in the first part are pretty shallow and boring (unless I'm missing something that I'm supposed to detect "between the lines") and the plotline about unmasking "Lady Whistledown" was really of very little interest to me. There are several characters - Lady Danbury, Mrs. Featherington, Eloise - who...more

My absolute favorite book of all time. Colin is my favorite brother and he's actually my favorite character type. He is a bit frivolous, confused and needs some growing up. Penelope is the best heroine. She had always loved Colin, yet remained only a friend of the family to him for years. Low on self-esteem but very bookish and with witty intellect, she grows as Lady Danby takes her under wing.

The search of lady Whistledown allows Penelope and Colin to learn about each other and...more

The beginning of this book was probably my favorite that I've read in a while. I'm definitely a sucker for romances where the hero or heroine has been in love with the other since childhood. I was definitely hooked from the first page, as I have so far throughout this series. It was definitely enjoyable but I feel like it wasn't quite on par with the first three. There were some things that Colin said and did that I didn't feel he apologized enough for. Penelope just seemed to forgive him when I...more

Absolutely perfect.

I couldn't help but love every single page of this novel. Julia Quinn had me laughing, sighing, biting my lip, close to tears a time or two, and utterly helpless to put down this book once I began. It was, perfection.

She manages to have an engaging and interesting story about a woman who's been (hopelessly) in love with a man (who sees her as a friend, nothing more) who suddenly "sees" her and they slowly fall in love with one another. It's simple - except that it's not.

I'm on to you, Lady Whistledown......

What a fantastic read! Another enjoyable book by Julia Quinn. I knew Colin was going to end up with Penelope (I think we all did) when he shouted he wasn't going to marry her. Sometimes men can be so stupid. It took Colin long enough to see the real beauty in Penelope. I wish he would have seen it long ago when they were kids like Penelope did at 15 years old, but then again we may not have had this amazing story.

I also have to say that Lady Danbury is a such...more

YUP. FIVE STARS. THIS IS HAPPENING.

I have been enjoying the Bridgerton series quite a bit, but I knew Romancing Mister Bridgerton was going to take it to the next level for me, and man ain't that the case. As others have mentioned, what works so well about it is that we already know Colin and Penelope from the first three books, and love them. We know there's a friendship there (and in Penelope's case, there's already FEEELINGS involved). So there is this awesome buildup to their story that the...more

The love story in book 3, Benedict’s, was love at first sight; Benedict and Sophie were knocked off their feet before they even said one word to each other. For Colin and Penelope, the opposite happened. They’ve known each other for years, he a popular Bridgerton, quick with a smile, or always letting his sense of humor show. Penelope, a shy girl, always a wallflower, has accepted that she’ll have to love Colin from a distance, while she lives the life of...more

On the sixth of April, in the year 1812—precisely two days before her sixteenth birthday—Penelope Featherington fell in love.
It was, in a word, thrilling. The world shook. Her heart leaped. The moment was breathtaking. And, she was able to tell herself withsome satisfaction, the man in question—one Colin Bridgerton—felt precisely
the same way.
Oh, not the love part. He certainly didn't fall in love with her in 1812 (and not in 1813, 1814, 1815, or—oh, blast, not in all the years1816-1822, either,

When I was first introduced to Colin Bridgerton, it was in his sister Daphne's book, The Duke & I. His character came off as the charmer in the family and most-likely to get whatever he wanted. It was no wonder I couldn't wait to read Colin's story. The thing that made it more exciting for me, is Penelope Featherington's story is told in this book as well. I always felt sorry for her.
After reading this book, I found myself very disappointed in Colin. There were times where he came off as a...more

Synopsis:
Penelope Featherington has been in love with Colin Bridgerton for most of her life but has always known that her adoration is unrequited. Finished this in just a few hours, I couldn't put it down! Ms. Quinn has absolutely entranced me with her well spun tales of the Bridgerton family, they all are so wonderful but I think Colin & the lovely Penelope have truly found a special place in my bookworm heart.

Colin is such a bright & engaging character, I loved that she made him real by showing us his insecurities. We've all had that guy that we thought was SO GREAT, & we put him on that pedestal where he could do nothing bu...more

I started reading this to try to de-stress. I've never actually read an out-and-out romance before, but I heard Quinn wrote fluffy and fun regencies, and her style, at least at the beginning, was lively and engaging. However, as the novel progressed, more and more things began to annoy me. First, Quinn does something with POV that really bothers me, and which I am trying to delicately explain here without giving away the book's central mystery, slight as it is. Basically, Quinn has a revelation...more

I was disappointed in this book. I was really looking forward to it because I liked the title (it makes me laugh), and I like the series, and I thought it would be really good. It's not that it was bad, it was OK, but not great. Not something I think I'll ever read again in the future.

First of all, all of the conflicts in the book boil down to two things - the jealousy of an unpublished author who never really wanted to publish until very recently for another author, and the disappointed of some...more

Aww... This is one of the sweetest couples I've ever seen.
I loved Penelope. She is such a brave girl, clever and patient. I know that if I were her, I would not be capable of dealing with people's tactless and cruel manners with so much tolerance. And her loyalty to Colin during all these years is so endearing. I was happy to witness the way their friendship evolved to something more dear. I could see how natural it was, especially from Colin's point of view.
Also, I think it is my duty to warn...more

I took a break from PN and erotica and looked through my 100 or so TBR books that I haven't packed yet (we're moving this summer) and came up with Julia Quinn, my first experience with this author. I had seen this book recommended on Amazon and picked it up for a quarter at the thrift store, and I'm so glad I did; I really enjoyed it! Sweet, poignant, romantic, fulfilling, and a truly satisfying HEA. Not a lot of steam, but what was there fit the story perfectly. Now I have the dilemma of whethe...more

#1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn loves to dispel the myth that smart women don't read (or write) romance, and in 2001 she did so in grand style, competing on the the game show The Weakest Link and walking away with the $79,000 jackpot. She displayed a decided lack of knowledge about baseball, country music, and plush toys, but she is proud to say that she aced all things British an...more
