My teacher-friends are used to hearing me rant about how many of my students, even literature majors, don't read books even in their first language (I teach overseas). Although the author is writing about teaching literature to high school students, his ideas are relevant for college students like mine, and I'm inspired not only to try some of these works in class, but to actually read them myself! I absolutely loved this book. As a literature fiend, I loved the short essays on such a wide variety of works from Shakespeare to Austen to Conrad. Each chapter is about a selection of books with similar themes and as I have read a lot of them, I enjoyed Maclean's insight on them immensely. He surely must be a very cool and beloved teacher if he teaches literature with so much love and passion :D
