For those of you who have dined at a Chick-Fil-A restaurant, you are aware that the employee’s response to whatever you ask for is ALWAYS, "my pleasure". (My mother and I make a joke out of it at times.) Well, no joke and unfortunately, Passionate Pleasures by Bertrice Small was far from a pleasing read for me. In fact, it left me empty, a little nauseous and made me grab for my Tums!
Independent and precise woman Kathryn St. John (pron...more
I remember reading Bertrice Small when I was a teenager. She’s one of those authors a lot of us cut our romance teeth on all those years ago. Her Skye O’Malley series was a favorite back then. So, needless to say, I was a tad curious when I received Passionate Pleasures to review, especially when I realized it’s erotica. I wanted to see how it goes when old school meets new school in the world of erotic romance. Sigh. I’m sorry to say it didn’t go well at all, not only in the erotic elements but...more

I was so disappointed in this book. I remember Bertrice Small from my furtive smut reading sessions as a teen. Her historicals were smoking hot and full of great characters. That was the primary reason I picked this book up.
About the only thing I loved about the book was Kathryn's library...go figure. And the fact that an almost middle aged librarian and middle school principal could find both emotional and sexual satisfaction. Too bad she told me instead of showing me.

Small is a great writer. I have only read one other of her books -- "The Border Lord & the Lady" and it is still one of my favorites. This did not resonate with me quite as well. It may be that I like historicals better, or that I just couldn't get into this story very well. But Small's writing is superb and it is filled with sensuality and the heroine's fantastic "fantasies of the night." The final conclusions of the story are worth wading through lots of dialogue that I didn't particularly...more
This is only the second book of this series that I've read and I like it okay. There is a lot of sex scenes which make this book very racy but since they are hidden within "the Channel" these scenes don't lend much to the actual plot. Very frank speaking in this book, a little too many "C" words for me. I like the characters in this series a lot which is why I continue reading it.

Actual romance, not one of the books in this series that is about crazy women. Some of the dialogue was a little weird, though, like Ms. Small stepped out for a minute and someone else typed a few lines while she was gone. But that was just a couple of spots.
Ummm. Not so much. It was okay, good in parts, but mostly kind of a thrown together mess. I know erotic fiction is all about gratuitous sex, but it wasn't very sexy, at least through the first half. Just not my thing, I guess.

There was soo much stuff that could have been edited out. For example do we need to know ALL about how the maid sets up his house, moves his stuff, sets his carpet blah blah blahhhhh?
Also I found it very annoying that this independent women was afraid of her brother and her reputation..what century are we in?

This erotic story was such a good autumn read with a nice plot. I already knew about the channel having read the rest of the series but this story was different than I expected. I really liked it! Librarian Kathryn, age 48 and major channel user, meets the new middle school principle Tim, who is five years younger.
