Today we find ourselves in an anomaly in human history: many of our lives are empty of animals. Many of us have pets or watch documentaries on Animal Planet, but, for the most part, we humans don't really know how all the other species on our planet live today. And as Laura Hobgood-Oster reveals, many of them are not living very well--sadly, not very well at all.

Should be mandatory reading for all church parishioners (or everyone who considers themselves to be a Christian). The author provides a rude awakenening to us, that as a society, we are failing miserably in how we treat "God's creatures" in keeping with the holy scriptures and teachings. There is considerable denial with regards to this issue as the author so skillfully lays out for us to see.

3.5 stars---The Friends We Keep is the type of book that is desperately needed to open the dialogue of animal welfare with people of the Christian faith. No movement has progressed without the assistance of the faithful, yet most animal welfare groups have neglected to speak directly to Christians in their outreach and educational materials.

Perhaps as a result of this failure, it is not uncommon to hear some Christians publicly making callous remarks about even basic concern for animal welfare.

While I dedicated a whole chapter in Year of Plenty to the topic animal dignity as it relates to faith and consumption, I am still a novice on the topic so I was grateful to recently come across Laura Hobgood-Oster's book, The Friends We Keep: Unleashing Christianity’s Compassion for Animals. It is a timely book on the hopeful and sometimes problematic relationship between the Christian faith and animals.

The heart of the book is three chapters on "non-human animals" as companions, in sport, and

This book, while well written was hard to read. This may have been because I expected more philosophical and hermeneutical information re: the relationship between people and animals vis a vie a faith practice, and less information about animal cruelty.

Great book for animal lovers and people who are concerned about animal cruelty and factory farming. The book is written from a christian prospective, but is a good read for animal lovers of all religions.

I enjoyed this book very much. Of course, it's easy to enjoy a book when it reinforces your own beliefs, eh? Any book that promotes a kinder, gentler world is a good one.
