I received a hardback copy of Logic of Demons from H.A. Goodman, the author, for review. I was happy to take a look at this novel because from the description, it sounded like something a little different from what I've been reading lately and it definitely caught my interest. I was happy to take a look at this novel because from the description, it sounded like something a little different from what I've been reading lately and it definitely caught my interest. I honestly didn't care much for the book cover, however, the book within was definitely worth reading.
Logic of Demons is a dark, twisty novel that introduces us to Devin Schwartz, a man who recently suffered the loss of his pregnant wife to an unspeakable act of violence. When Devin decides to take matters into his own hands and seek revenge on the murderer, it sets into place a series of events that change his life and very soon after, his afterlife as well.
Devin finds himself transported to hell where he is offered a "too good to be true" deal with the devil. Satan was a lively and entertaining part of the story. She is the boss of "The Company", and the company's product? The Formula for revenge.
I found Devin to be such an interesting character, not really one I can relate to, but interesting all the same. His actions and decisions seemed to be very immature, making impulsive decisions without considering any consequences to himself or anyone else. He also seemed a bit obtuse at times, missing things that should have been fairly obvious. Even though he claimed to have the single-minded purpose to be with his wife and child, he didn't seem to actively ensure that he was on the right path to succeed in that. Although, I guess that's a fairly common human trait, inadvertently putting obstacles in your own path.
Nadine also plays a major part in all of these goings-on. She is the teenage target that Devin must foist the Company's "Formula" off on. Nadine is an easy character to sympathize with, with her tragic past and so many things against her, I couldn't help rooting for her throughout the twist and turns.
Some of the plot was a bit hard to follow at the beginning, but was cleared up with the twists at the end, which I felt was cleverly done. This book takes a hard look at right verses wrong and some of the gray areas, as well as causing me as a reader to think about where I stand as far as my beliefs, and how I would react to certain situations and what the consequences would be.
Although Logic of Demons explores heaven, hell, angels, and demons, I don't feel that it had an overbearingly religious message and is a novel that can be thoroughly enjoyed regardless of your own personal beliefs.
This novel can be pretty graphic at times and does explore some touchy subjects. However, I don't believe it was overdone in anyway and was relevant to the story. As a reviewer though, I feel as though I should mention this to anyone thinking of reading Logic of Demons.
Overall, I think H.A. Goodman has penned a novel that is incredibly unique and thought provoking. I would recommend it to anyone who likes a bit of darkness in their fantasy.

Logic of Demons is definitely one of the most interesting and to put it mildy: weird books that I've read in a while. It deals with the idea of what's right and wrong and whether an eye for an eye is seen as okay in "God's" eyes. It's the idea of who gets to play God. Is it alright for me to be a murderer if I'm only killing other murderers? In this novel, there are arguments for both sides, and they're all actually quite convincing.

I find that lately, every time I receive a book for review from an author that's been published by an unknown publishing company, I'm disappointed. I was immediately gripped, pulled into the world of Devin Schwartz, horrified that I was unable to do anything to help him as I helplessly watched him make one horrible decision that would change his life forever. He buys the Forumla and finds he can't stop himself from killing the man that raped and murdered his pregnant wife. And then he finds himself working for the Company, assured that he is 100% NOT in Hell (I have to say, I wasn't so sure).

Logic of Demons takes a look at how thinly drawn the lines are between good and evil. As Devin makes his way through the afterlife, trying to understand the world of demons and angels and paladins and salesmen, he continues to make some pretty bad choices, a lot of them based on sheer naivety. It's hard to sit back and watch him when, as a reader, you pick up on things so much more quickly than he does. But, through his fumbling, the reader comes to understand what Goodman is trying to accomplish. In evil, there is always a little good to be found, and in good, there is always evil to be found - it just depends on how you look at things.

Overall, this book is utterly readable and enjoyable, and it's got a message worth reading. I don't really like how Goodman seems to overlook completely the whole idea that things that may seem bad on the surface aren't necessarily so because of intentions, but I didn't really feel the book lacking for not approaching it. I suppose it delves enough into the moral to not need it. There were a couple other parts of the book that also frustrated me (since when does a person not have the opportunity to be defended at his trial, for example?), but seriously, with a good editor, this book could have easily made it's way up to 5 stars on my book list.

If you've ever questioned heaven or hell or good or evil, or really even if you're just looking for a fast-paced, exciting read with some unique twists, this book is for you! I loved it! You'll find yourself hooked and wondering just how Nadine and her soul play into this whole thing right up until the very last chapter. Definitely worth checking out! :-)(less)

I think I should describe Logic of Demons as 'unexpected'. It started off with Devin mourning his wife, Bridget's terrible death. She was raped and killed by a serial killer caller Earl Gray. THE STORY
With one little decision to stay home instead of accompanying his wife to the mall, Devin's whole life changed. One more decision made out of a need to make his wife's murderer pay changed Devin's death. Now, instead of finding himself reunited with his wife and unborn child in the afterlife, Devin is enlisted in the service of The Company, selling a Formula to innocent souls–an endeavor that results in unfathomable consequences.

All Devin wants is to be with his wife, and he's told by his demonic mentor Templeton that if he just sells the Formula to a young teenage girl named Nadine, he will be free to search for his wife in this new realm of existence.

Soon however, Devin begins to wonder about The Formula he's peddling and the effects it will have on young Nadine. Before he can even attempt the sale he finds himself face to face with an Angel, one who makes him aware of the growing unrest between Heaven and Hell and the importance Nadine has to this epic battle. Devin made several regrettable choices in life, now the question remains as to whether he has learned enough to make the right ones in death, as his fate, Nadine's fate, and all of humanity's fate could be on the line.

MY THOUGHTS
Conceptually fascinating, Logic of Demons examines the extreme consequences resulting from the basest human behaviors, where the survivors of horrific crimes often scoff at the lack of divine intervention on their behalf, leading them to an entitled sense of vengeful retribution that usually only ends in additional pain. From there, the way for the eclipse of rationality and the birth of moral ambiguity is paved, and the separation of right and wrong can no longer be so easily defined. This story is a telling introspection, one that forces us to confront the fact that the evilest of deeds are often cloaked in a wrongful sense of righteousness, and at times overwhelming fanaticism provides the means to justify acts of inhuman cruelty. The broad spectrum of implications addressed causes us to question the reasoning behind our own day to day actions, and whether we have ever acted impulsively, thinking our behavior was morally and ethically sound but perhaps could have been more cruel or selfish in nature than we might care to admit.

Though the questions raised by this tale are haunting and endless, main character Devin is exceedingly difficult to relate to, his misery over his wife's death earning our sympathy and understanding, but the brutality of his retaliation erects a transparent wall between us where we can both see and hear him, but he remains out of reach of our full emotional absolution and the warmth of our complete embrace. He is consumed by a blind naivete, bumbling forth with a single-minded purpose that causes him to agree to virtually anything anyone asks of him regardless of the consequence. Devin is like the lightest of feathers, haplessly blown in the direction of the prevailing wind, and whether the whispers carried on those billowing gusts are poisonous or heavenly seems to matter little to him provided they get him back to his wife. He makes himself frustratingly pliable, able to be molded into any dominant personality's shape of choice without truly questioning what effects this new form might carry with it, and we have no choice but to read on as he repeats his mistake again and again.

The story itself is difficult to manage at times, often muddied by the presence of several snippets thrusting us into the midst of Nadine's vibrant imagination as well as flashbacks to a younger Devin, and these disparate elements begin to cloud the clarity of Devin's ultimate goal. Further adding to the confusion is the contrast of a fairly simplistic writing style indicating a younger target audience with the very graphic and violent imagery of the horrors of which humanity is capable. Thus, this story seems to be in a classification limbo, lacking some of the finesse that might appeal to an older audience, but also far more brutal than one would deem appropriate for all ages.

Mr. Goodman does provide a very interesting twist at the end, one that eases some of the confusion and begins to knit the disjointed elements back together, thereby leaving us with more of a sense of understanding than we've experienced at any point previously. This story has a powerful premise and a riveting concept, his ideas unmistakably unique and his vision of the afterlife intriguing, but at times the characterization and execution can cause readers to stumble in their journey with Devin. That being said, I expect more good ideas will no doubt come from Mr. Goodman moving forward, and I will certainly be keeping an eye out for his additional works.

H.A. Goodman’s debut novel, Logic of Demons: The Quest for Nadine’s Soul, is a fictional tale about the pivotal decisions you make in your life that may effect your afterlife. What would happen if your pregnant wife was raped and murdered and you knew who the killer was? Would you seek justice and kill the culprit? It’s a logic “what if” question; one that we all ponder from time to time. If that scenario happened to you…what would you do?

The book opens with our hero faced with that conflict. Devin Schwartz's wife is brutally murdered and he’s knows the killer. With little hesitation, Devin slaughters the man responsible for his wife & unborn child’s death and winds up dead himself, suspending in a bizarre afterlife. Since his vengeance, he’s now deemed a “demon” and is recruited to work for The Company, selling something called “The Formula” to unsuspecting living humans. With all the conviction that Devin started out with in this book, he certainly lost his bravado when it came to the afterlife.

The bulk of this book was about Devin fumbling through afterlife, attempting to reunite with his wife and child. There were many times were I wanted to smack Devin. Between The Company, the Angels, the Paladins and Satan herself, there was a point in the book where I didn’t know who was telling the truth. Devin acted – often to his detriment – too impulsively, causing more problems for our demonic hero.

The Company (aka Hell), ultimately tasks Devin with selling The Formula to a troubled teenage girl, Nadine. Using The Formula, Devin must convince Nadine to do something heinous. And who is Nadine anyway? In the story, Nadine is this talented anime artist whose parents are dead and she lives with her holy-rolling Uncle. But why her? There’s a billion depressed, self-loathing teenagers out there so what makes her so special? With all the tragedy bestowed on this chick, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for her. While reading this, I often thought that personal tragedy was the common thread between Devin and Nadine. Could it be that Devin is the key to save or condemn Nadine’s soul? I won’t tell you…you’ll have to find out.

Logic of Demons was different from anything else I've ever read. I compliment the author, Mr. Goodman, on coming up with a unique storyline, and his ability to throw in some twists I didn't see coming. It's always refreshing to see something new.

I initially had a hard time with some of the brutality in this tale. Under the premise of the story I can see the need for the strong nature of such scenes, but I felt that the story sometimes focused too heavily on the graphic nature of the violence involved instead of on the deep emotional values that drove the characters to do what they do. There was also a lot of foul language, which seemed unnecessary to me, since I feel the over use of certain expletives can often detract from the story, rather than adding to it.

The lead character, Devin, finds himself in an awful predicament after killing the man who killed his wife and unborn child. I thought Devin was very naive when he suddenly ends up in Hell, a place the reader recognizes immediately but takes Devin forever to figure out. It was obvious that the formula he was to be selling to others would be something to take over their souls, but all Devin could see was himself, his needs and what he wants. This blinds him to the things happening around him until he finally gets the harsh wake up call as he witnesses the results of his actions.

Several short stories intertwined with this one throughout the book, changing so abruptly that once I would feel I was getting a good flow, someone new was introduced. It took this happening a couple of times before I realized the extra curricular people were all figments of Nadine's imagination as she would write and draw through her own emotions. It would have been nice to have a little precursor to these scenes so the reader doesn't feel they are being thrown from one place to another.

The story took a large twist at the end of the book, which actually helped clear up some of the "hopping around" feeling and suddenly puzzle pieces began to fall into place. The twist was both unique and irritating to me at the same time. I enjoyed that it was something new, and that in hindsight I can't imagine that I didn't see it coming, but at the same time I also felt it kind of negated everything else I had read about Devin through the rest of the book.

The good point about this book is the thought processes it opens up about thinking before one acts. There are always consequences to our actions and rushing into things without thinking them through can often result in trouble. Also, basing our actions on what is best for ourselves without considering the needs of others around us or how our actions might affect them can be disastrous. It sent the message of trying to be more aware of what is going on around us.

This was a very unique take on one person's view of what the afterlife might be like, as well as being thought provoking in its message to the reader.(less)

I was contacted by Hal Goodman to read his novel, Logic of Demons, and I heartily accepted because I love books with religious undertones that address some of the more vivid aspects of life that we might otherwise overlook. He's created a masterpiece of a novel that combines a great writing voice, characters that make you feel for them, and a story about redemption that anyone can appreciate.

I did have a few qualms with Logic of Demons though, and I feel it's only right as a reviewer to address them. Devin, our hero had a clear goal to reunite with his wife throughout the story, yet when he was presented with cataclysmic circumstances, he always seemed to leap before looking. Now, lots of us are like this, but it really had me wanting to punch the MC for his stupidity. Then, when he is given the task by The Company to sell the Formula to Nadine, all I wanted to was save her because of her background of tragedy. Basically, I had conflicting emotions tackling one another through the story.

Logic of Demons is a very well-written novel. Clearly the author put both time and effort into the story, as well as heart. I will, however, say that I think Logic of Demons would be suited for more of an adult crowd that a YA audience. The graphic nature of parts of the story, as well as the content might offend those otherwise. I give it a 4 out 5, and I'd highly recommend this book to more of an adult audience that enjoys Christian fiction, as well as contemporary and fantasy.

To be completely honest, Logic of Demons felt like it was written for no other purpose than to convey a message to its readers. While this is usually a fine motive, Logic of Demons was written in an overly simplistic, flat manner, which made for a very dry read.

There are several things I would like to criticize about this book. The first one of course the main character, Devin was too naive and never uses his brain; perhaps it was because he lost Bridget but it makes me wondering how dependent he was to her when she still alive. Logic of Demons was an interesting exploration in all things religious and in this aspect, was a fascinating read. I enjoyed the main character's journey through Hell and back, learning the story of some of the other characters and the ending was certainly surprising. I enjoyed the main character's journey through Hell and back, learning the story of some of the other characters and the ending was certainly surprising. However, there were definitely aspects that didn't work for me.

Devon's journey was definitely one full of twists and turns. I was drawn into his plight from the beginning and wanted to know why and how his wife was ripped from him. I understood why he fell into temptation but him killing his wife's murderer really did cut off my connection with him. Afterward, he seemed very childish, falling for one lie after another. While I liked that he was so devoted to his wife, it bothered me that he was willing to forsake everything to be back with her. I was really glad that he learned to stop making rash decisions, even if he did believe he was going to be back with her. In that regard, his growth was refreshing.

I also found how Goodman portrayed demons very fascinating. The fact that they lied to each other to get the new recruits to follow suit was an interesting twist. The entire imagining of Hell was something I hadn't read before and felt fresh. I enjoyed picturing it as an office with stints selling The Formula and answering to "The Boss".

The way we were introduced to Nadine, the girl who could draw angels and demons was also great. I loved getting snippets of her stories throughout the novel and really helped solify the ending. I had no idea how it would end but becuase of these snippets of who Nadine was and what she did, it was a believalbe way for the story to end. It was a quest for Nadine's soul, we just don't find out until the end that she's alone on the journey.

While there were plenty of good things about this novel, it wasn't without its faults. The endless exploration did wear down on the story and interrupted the flow of the plot. By the middle of the novel, I felt that it was either trying to preach to me or that it was focusing too hard on the issues and forgoing the plot. I felt a lot of things could have been cut to allow the reader to interrupt what the author was trying to say instead of hammering it over and over again.

The writng was also a bit shaky. Some first novels don't feel like firsts, but this one did. It suffered from some over-writing and as mentioned before, it just felt like the author didn't trust that the reader could get the point. However, this only showed up every once and a while and for the most part was absent.

I enjoyed getting to know the other character but I felt a bit tricked about Devon's son and his wife. We go on a journey, and unbeknownst to Devon and the reader, we are actually with his son and his wife but his son and his wife pretend to be entirely different people. It was a bit frustrating because it was from these two journies that Devon learned that even if he does bad things for good reasons, the deeds are still bad. This is really Devon's breaking point where he finally starts to accept his own actions and because those people his wife and son were pretending to be didn't actually exist, it sort of cheapened the journey for me.

There were a lot of things about this novel that worked-- the main character's journey, the re-invention of Heaven and Hell and angels and demons and the surprise ending. But because a lot of the plot was buried in exploration, I grew a bit detached from everything else and lost interest about halfway through. This might be a book for some people but I certainly wouldn't reccommend it for everyone. Overall, I'm glad I read it but it's definitely not for the light hearted.(less)

Logic of Demons is a very easy and enjoyable read. Despite being an easy read, Logic of Demons is a much deeper novel than one may think at first glance. You will definitely need to keep an open mind when reading Logic of Demons as the novel addresses strong subject matter such as rape, murder, depression, alcoholism, values, genocide, afterlife, and religion (Heaven and Hell). It is evident that H. A. Goodman has definitely invested a lot of time into researching these subjects. Moreover, while reading the novel, you may find yourself going back and forth between the history books and the novel.

H. A. Goodman’s self-published novel Logic of Demons will keep you guessing as to what lies ahead. Through the subjects presented, readers will be able to connect with the characters portrayed in the novel. H. A. Goodman has created a wonderful novel, with an original plot and an unforeseen ending.

I recommend this novel to those who enjoy science-fiction, thrillers and contemporary fantasy.

Enter The Company, otherwise known as Hell, Devin has been chosen by The Company to be turned into a demon and to help sell their Formula. But Devin will soon realize that everything he thought he knew about Heaven and Hell wasn’t all true and the very mission he has agreed to undertake may cause him more harm than good.

Review: Logic of Demons was a book filled with so many twists and turns you’re head will be spinning. When you think you figured out a certain part of the plot, you’ll find yourself back at square one attempting to understand what in the blazes is going on! Author H.A. Goodman does a very good job at keeping you both frustrated and simultaneously determined to know what happens through Devin’s journey and what is so special about Nadine.

Part of me sympathized with Devin. I understood why he committed such a heinous act and part of me wanted to slap him repeatedly for some of the stupid things he ends up believing! He’s a character a lot of readers will be able to identify with and understand. He was written very well (for the most part). You end up connecting with him from the beginning and wanting to help him find his way back to his wife (while at the same time wanting to either slap or strangle him-- sometimes a bit of both!).

Nadine is a beautiful soul. I SO desperately wanted to save her and protect her. For a teenager she has an amazing amount of wisdom and knowledge. Natalia is also a very lovely character, full of compassion and love.

The pacing of Logic of Demons could have been better. The beginning starts off with action but drags some throughout the middle. It was very frustrating on how long it takes to find out what exactly is happening in the story! I had to put the book down a few times out of sheer annoyance of the plot moving just too slow. But around chapter seventeen the story picks back up again.

Logic of Demons also addresses some very tough and heavy subjects: depression, rape, murder, sex trafficking, genocide, the afterlife, God, Satan, and religion. There are some moments you may have to reread certain parts to fully understand and grasp what author H.A. Goodman is trying to convey to his audience but there are many good lessons to learn from his characters and story. The view of genocide in Rwanda was not a chapter I cared for at all, too much description for my taste, and traumatizing I feel for readers so you may want to skip that chapter (21).

For the most part, I enjoyed reading Logic of Demons. The ending was really great! Surprised me, I did not expect it to end the way that it did and how big Nadine’s role really was.

Not everyone will be happy reading this book, especially since it discusses such strong subject matter. You will need to come to Logic of Demons with an open mind.

Whether you believe in God or the Devil, whether you believe there is an afterlife or not, Logic of Demons: The Quest for Nadine’s Soul is a pretty interesting read, one that will cause you think about your own views on yourself and on what you believe in.

Devin is sent to The Company after he falls trap to his feelings about his wife’s murder and takes justice into his own hands. Apparently, he’s applied for a Sales position, unbeknownst to him. As you can easily guess, The Company is Hell and The Boss is Satan. His job? To sell The Formula, aka Revenge. Retaliation. Retribution.

Devin was not a very interesting character, to me. It’s easy to understand where he’s coming from, but it’s not easy to relate to the experience or his choice. And his naivety was annoying. However, I did enjoy his progression throughout the story, though I never saw him as “evil” to begin with. The poor guy is thrust into the war between Good and Evil, lied to, tricked, physically and mentally tortured, yet he presses forward, albeit mostly for selfish goals.

At first, the introduction to Nadine bothered me, even though it’s done in a creative fashion that really ties into the entire book. However, later on the creativity of that transition and subsequent ones really interested me. Nadine’s a creative soul and I found her imagination amazing! She’s in an ugly spot due to certain experiences and is overwhelmed with grief and depression. Drawing anime was a catharsis for her. I found her to be the best part about the book and she wasn’t in it enough, even though the story revolved around her. I would’ve like some more insight into Nadine via her own eyes, and not everyone else’s thoughts.

Natalia, an Angel who is watching over Nadine, wants him to witness firsthand what The Formula does. She is trying to prove to Devin that he is being played and is working for the wrong team. So she transports him back in time to Rwanda where he has to witness the carnage of the genocide that took place there in 1994. [This scene fueled my passion for human rights advocacy all over again. I was an anti-genocide advocate during my undergrad, and Rwanda holds a dear place in my heart. The genocide that occurred there in 1994 and the movie made about it, Hotel Rwanda, is what shaped my ambitions. During my undergrad, I wrote many papers on the genocide and the inaction of the world. I will adopt a child from that country one day.]

The plot was interesting but after the Paladin entered the story, it all went downhill for me. I did not enjoy any part of their involvement in the story. I also found the main plot regarding Nadine and her importance to be odd. The ending of the story was creative but it didn’t work for me. I just found it a bit convoluted and weird. However, as stated earlier, I enjoyed the premise and themes presented. It was definitely a thought-provoking book that made you question your values about certain issues of justice and the like. I think the author has great ideas.(less)

I really didn't know what to expect when I read the letter that came with the book from the author. He seemed to be concerned about the graphic things that happened in the novel and the religious overtones. But to me it was just a story and that's how I read it. It didn't preach and really the sex trafficking and child conscription were not graphic and essential to the story line. It wasn't inappropriate in any way. So, to get to the meat of it. The main character has been to hell and back in the last few weeks when the story opens up and he is on the edge. He's considering taking justice into his own hands-vigilante style. And how many times have we seen something on t.v. where a murderer is let go on a technicality and we've thought how we'd like him to get his on the streets. But Devin, our main character finds himself in that same position and temptations is just to great. He then finds himself in various places after he dies working to sell "The Formula" to various individuals without thinking about it only focused on getting back to his wife Bridget and his unborn son.

Life handed him a hard lesson which he didn't learn and he's not learning it any better in the afterlife. He's tested again and again. Until he finally finds something to hang onto. Everyone in the afterlife is bent on either selling Nadine the Formula or saving her soul, depending on which side of the afterlife you come from and who you work for. So who is Nadine? She's a young teenager, who lives with her alcoholic Uncle Gustav who does nothing but resent the fact that he has to take care of her because her father was killed in a drive by in a case of mistaken identity and her mother died in jail, a junkie. She's very depressed and has a secret. But she's also a very talented artist, drawing anime throughout most of her classes and lives for her meetings with her anime club on Thursdays during lunch. It seems to be the only thing that brings her happiness.

Devin is dragged through hell, earth, heaven, hell, and many other places before he's finally put on trial for failing to find his moral compass in time. Many surprises occur during the trial and after but the true test comes down to the quest for Nadine's soul. I had a problem with the ending. I didn't mind how the characters were concluded, in fact it was very clever and unique. But Nadine was depressed to the point of suicide and it felt like the author resolved those feelings too easily. Here is one quote, "With the help of her imagination, she had defeated the foundation of her sadness, the rationale of her deepest insecurities and darkest emotions." It isn't a mind over matter thing. Depression is a serious illness and suicide is the lowest point of that depression. At that point, your imagination doesn't help you out of it. Intervention, medication therapy, friends, possibly a hospital stay, all of that is needed to bring you back from that threshold. I know. I've been there and it isn't easy to get back from. It's my only complaint with the novel.

I thought it was a great story with a real twist at the end. I never expected it and couldn't figure out how Nadine knew so much. It was great to see Devin grow from such a selfish desire driven person to a person driven by good and belief in doing the right thing. The author obviously has a great imagination to create such a twisted and complicated story, yet bring all the story lines to a satisfying end. I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone that wants to read a great story. It isn't religious in any way except for locale. I would say there are some graphic scenes in it, but not sexual, more violent. And unfortunately, true.

This is definitely an adult book or an older YA reader 17 or older. There are scenes in it that are inappropriate for younger than that. But it is definitely worth reading. I'd read it again in a heartbeat and though it kind of taught a lesson, it didn't beat you over the head with it. It was a very good story. Just didn't like the dismissive way depression was treated. Will I read other books by this author? You bet! He knows how to tell a story!

Well, I definitely enjoyed this book thoroughly! Logic of Demons is just the right book for me when I was looking for something new and gripping. It takes you on a crazy, fantasy ride with interesting twists along the way.

This is such an emotional beginning, and it sets up the story well. I feel for the characters almost right away.

I am able to relate with Devin because I understand his motivations. He has good intentions even though they aren't carried out correctly. Nadine, a central character to the book, is introduced in a unique way.
