Not a historical! I thought it was, from the blurb and the cover, although neither actually says, "historical".

The blurb doesn't say what era, but it starts off with the "son of a wealthy London baronet" rescuing a "homeless young man off the bitter winter streets." And then the cover - maybe especially the cover photo which is sooo very typical of other historical romances - completely persuaded my subconscious that this was a historical, maybe set in the 1800s. I see that a few others have she...more

There are many definitions of freedom. The one most applicable in this case is philosophical 'the power to exercise choice and make decisions without constraint from within or without; autonomy; self-determination’. Even though Laurie, in Harper Fox's book 'The Midwinter's Prince' had all the luxuries money could offer, he was not free. Until he met Sasha, he'd never realized how confined he was and when he figured it out, he had no idea how to remedy the situation.

Laurie is an amazingly adaptab...more

Nineteen years old Laurie Fitzroy is the son of wealthy Sir William Fitzroy. He has everything ... but he is also lonely and imprisoned in his life of having to become what his father is needed. Then one freezing night, he meets an illegal homeless boy, Sasha, and his life forever changes. Because Sasha teaches him to dream, to fight for what he wants, and to love ...

Oh, Harper Fox, how I adore your stories. I have to admit, I still struggle with Ms. Fox's very British language/style -- it is so...more

SlashReaders: This book was a little strange but I liked it. There were a few moments in the book where I had a hard time following what was being said or how it was being said; however, that was mostly at the beginning. After the first chapter I did not have a big problem with it.

Laurie and Sasha are an interesting pair of characters, both sweet and naive in their own ways. The progression of their relationship was nice--though on occasion I wanted to smack them both. There was a fair amount of...more

Holy crap this is a good novel.

Laurie is an upper-class young man, his mother comes from a noble family in France, and his father is filthy rich. One night while waiting for his chauffeur he meets Sasha, a homeless boy who is homeless for spoilery reasons. The connection between them is instantaneous and palpable, Laurie finds himself stepping outside his world of operas and cramming to help Sasha, and Sasha finds himself trusting Laurie, perhaps the first person he's trusted since he was a chil...more

I found Midwinter Prince a mixed story. It’s a decent romance but loses the contemporary feel often enough that I kept thinking this was a historical, then references to pop culture would get thrown in and I’d be jolted once again. The writing is very typical of the author, complex layered language that is often too wordy and awkward to make for a smooth, easy read. It’s not bad if you enjoy slight tongue twisting to your prose and there is an attempt at intense, dramatic romance. Overall an ok...more

This book is like the sweetest lover's kiss - the one you will remember for a long time afterwards - so poetic and gentle, so haunting. I'm going to gush now - I'm compelled to! And I'm not generally a gusher. I've read Ms. Fox's other books and loved them all, but this one is by far the best (and the others are outstanding). A must read - no question about it! Five stars isn't nearly enough - this novel is so far above most everything else I've read in the genre.

I thought this would be a “comfort read” sort of book when I started it, but man---by the middle all sorts of melodramatic things were happening! And perhaps I would have preferred it if the plot were a bit more mundane----more about Laurie building his new independent life with Sasha while working in the theatre, and less about Sasha’s soap-opera sort of past.

But hey, by this point anything by Harper Fox is nearly an automatic buy for me, and while this book isn’t going to be a favourite of min...more

I abandoned this about a quarter of the way even though I found it okay to read. I liked it much better than the first book by this author - I barely got through the first page of that one (sorry, forgot the title). My big problem with Midwinter Prince is that I felt as if I were reading about a couple of children rather two nineteen year-olds. at least, I recall Laurie being 19. I can't remember how old Sasha is but the way Laurie behaved, Sasha appears years older by comparison. Laurie complai...more

I enjoyed "A Midwinter Prince" even more than "Life After Joe". The thing that really stood out for me was how sympathetic and likeable the protagonist Laurie is, and how much he grows and changes during the course of this story. The change is very organic and believable, coming out of adversities not of his making, and adversities he chooses himself. This made for an immensely satisfying read when I got to the end of the story. Great stuff. There's a number of interesting aspects to this story...more

3.5 stars, I think. If you read this one for the characters and the romance, it's well worth the time. The plot was interesting, but a little too overwhelming. Several times it felt...cluttered. Disjointed. Just...too much, and with far too neat a resolution to everything. I felt very disconnected from the story, where usually I like to feel like I'm right in the middle of it. I suppose that could have been the writing style just as much as the plot itself, though, I'm not really sure. In any ca...more

A very beautiful, bitter sweet love story.

The beginning has a dreamlike/fairytale quality in a snowy, timeless London. Made me think of "The prince and the pauper" and also the Oscar Wilde fairy tale about the golden prince, although there is no real connection or relation.

The writing was brilliant, and with two so very young lovers the falling in love and feeling it so strongly and "forever" felt naturally.

I enjoyed this very much as it was a very romantic story, but still held enough realism t...more

This was a very sad and introspective romance. The writing was wonderful as befits this author, but the pace of the story and the almost constant main characters introspection was a little too much for me. That and the MC's very weak personality......as if he lived in a dream and if nothing could touch him then he'd be okay.

Laurie is a wealthy barons son. A very lonely young man who's spent his life just following along to his fathers dictates. Not making waves. Just accepting. Until he meets Sa...more

This was lovely at its essence (if not its execution) and so much more than a coming-of-age love story.

When Laurie, wealthy scion and pampered rich boy meets Sasha, a homeless, street hustler, his eyes are opened up to a whole new world that has been right in front of him. His (totally evil and repulsive) father does not take well to Laurie’s new infatuation and kicks him to the curb, literally, where he must make his own way with nothing more than the clothes on his back.

Loved this story. I was a bit confused at first, wondering if it was a historical romance or a contemporary romance, but that was soon cleared up. I think it was just the author's writing style, it's maybe a bit old fashioned. But I loved the characters, especially Sasha. And I loved how Laurie grew as a man, how he learned to be self-reliant and strong as a person. Beautiful love story.

It's good till around the half even I's a bit confused about times. Actually the prose still made me think it's historical but DVD and cellphone ="= . Then after that point it's just too melodrama and I started skimming, then scrolled to the end. Partially my fault that couldn't made myself sticked with it to the end, but I really couldn't see what this are about.

Once again Harper Fox pours her magical soul unto the page and gives us a taut and suspenseful mystery wrapped up in a sweet and unutterably beautiful love story. Sasha is a Romani--a gypsy with a dark past who sleep on the streets and sells himself when needed to get by--to survive. Laurie is a young college student living under the thumb of his drunken and angry aristocratic father who stumbles upon the huddled figure of a young man one cold night.

And so begins the love affair of Sasha and La...more

Can't understand why this is on the gay historical list because it's NOT historical. There were too many egregious things in the first couple of chapters (the absolute nonsense about the Lyceum theatre being the first I spotted) for me to continue - it really reads like a historical that has been badly converted to a contemporary. Did not finish.

It took me a while to get into this one but have been tired of late so putting it in part down to that. Once, however, I did have a good 'reading run' at it, I sat up way too late to finish it. This author is great at the combination of romance, angst, drama, action and hurt/comfort, and this is no exception.

Another memorable read by Harper Fox. Laurie is an extremely engaging character as is the dark and mysterious, Sasha. This story is part fairy tale, part mystery, with a healthy dose of Harper Fox angst. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it without hesitation.

Beautifully written story, which is Harper Fox's trademark. The protagonists are engaging, especially Laurie. By the end of the story, I felt as though Laurie was part of my family and I wanted only the best for him.

Fox does a wonderfully subtle job of weaving class and race/ethnicity issues into the story without overwhelming the narrative. Her prose continues to be elegant and lovely to read.

This is a good story, the familiar trope of poor little rich boy with bastard of a father finds a lover, but Fox breathes a believable air into the story, keeping it from going over the top, keeping it from succumbing to cliche.

It didn't feel as raw and strong as Life After Joe (which makes my awesomeness list); it simply didn't move me like that one did. In the end, I'm wondering if the only thing that kept this down was the omniscient viewpoint. Or at least, when I tried to figure it out, I th...more

Reminded me London, even though it was fiction. Good characterization and plot. Very good read.

Loved this engrossing tale.It has everything love, suspense, angst, and tenderness.

Dramatic story about young love, with a hint of Romeo and Juliet flavour! Yes, sometimes it's over the top. Yes, sometimes the plot seems implausible, but I'm 100% willing to suspend my cynical self and cheer for the two star-crossed lovers, wishing for a HEA for them.

Prepare for some fine drama.

Прекрасная книга.

The author has an over-the-top style to begin with. Pair that with an over-the-top plot and characterization, and you've got a novel filled with excess. Fox lost me when Laurie was an unbelievably good Hamlet, but there were other steps along that road.

The book is saved, and gets a four star rating, because Fox is truly a superior writer, even with the style that needs careful handling. A Midwinter Prince, for me, is the lesser of the three books by Fox that I've read, but still a better-than-a...more
