This isn’t a book of poems, what’s inside is more like “wisdom literature”, but of a very unconventional sort.

Michaux wrote this book late in life, in his 70's, and it is a distillation of the relentlessly open and searching intelligence characteristic of his entire writing life. Often ponderous, biting and caustic, this book of original aphorisms by Michaux stands in contrast to timeless and elegant religious or otherwise philosophical aphorisms. Much like Pessoa, Michaux celebrates failure and obscurity and does it by way of evasion and obfuscation. Still there are some gems in here. It is also a strike against intellectual complacency, and for that I commend Michaux. As I read, I often would let these original sayings wash over me like a bitter tonic.

Henri Michaux was a highly idiosyncratic Belgian poet, writer and painter who wrote in the French language. Michaux is best known for his esoteric books written in a highly accessible style, and his body of work includes poetry, travelogues, and art criticism. Michaux travelled widely, tried his hand at several careers, and experimented with drugs, the latter resulting in two of his most intriguin ...more
