Somewhat to my chagrin, this was the first book Cole memorized, at about age 2. My chagrin was due to the subject of the machine's work, which is to knock down a charming vintage '20s brick building and a tree, and put up a steel and concrete structure. Sigh. But we were delighted that he quickly memorized the pages and could read them to us, though I think we could never quite get him to do it on camera.

Ooh, my nephew loved this one! He must have made me read it to him 15 times. Before long, he was repeating the story with me, so that was just fantastic. Nice bright, vivid pictures. TheseByron Barton books are all great for little kids.

Straightforward story (five or less words in a sentence. one sentences for each two pages) with large text and clear pictures. Shows a group of workers use a wide range of machines on a construction site.
Good for preschool / kindergarten story times or checkout. Popular with my kindergartners.

Very popular with one of my storytime boys. He kept pointing out which kind of machine was working. And it's great to have a short, simple book to read in baby storytime that isn't about farm animals.

This book shows how many women and men do work everyday. Many workers do construction work everyday, and this story gives children a insight of how this work is done.

This was very popular with our two-year-old son. The text was very simple and kind of obvious, but it was a hit with him.

I heard you reading this to yourself this week (October 11th 2010) while I was putting laundry in the washing machine. You called to me when you were done to tell me you had been reading it all by yourself. I was surprised at how much of the text you had remembered.

This is Joe's first favorite book and he wants to read it all day and point at the machines. He's SUCH a BOY! (btw, Inder couldn't resist this one for its lovely environmental message. "Bulldoze that tree!")

I used this book in my two-year-old storyhour program. The kids loved it. The machines were cool and the workmen were very friendly.
