The third and final book in the Stillwater Trilogy by Brenda Novak. I've read some of the other reviews, and most people thought this book was too detailed about the sexual abuse, it made them uncomfortable, or it just was unthinkable. Well, unfortunately, however uncomfortable it may make you to read it, sexual abuse happens all the time in the real world. There were two books leading up to this one, you should have seen this coming. The only way Maddy was going to find out what happened to her father was for the whole story to unfold...all the gory details. Ho ...more

Good suspense, a sexy leading man, and a satisfying resolution to the Stillwater trilogy. The audiobook narrator is good too. I first read/listened to this series quite a few years ago. Looking back, I was less enthusiastic about Novak's work than I might have been, if I hadn't been heavily into erotic romance at the time and hoping for more explicit sex scenes than this series offers. This time around, the relative lack of throbbing euphemisms didn't bother me. (Once you've read enough of that, ...more

Review from Backchatting Books

I found this book fairly difficult to read given the references to sexual abuse. I haven’t read the first two books in the series and the blurb on the back didn’t exactly prepare me for what was to come. Madeline Barker’s father disappeared twenty years ago and her step brother has long been suspected of killing him. When her father’s car is discovered in the local quarry, it sparks new questions rather than answering old ones.

Madeline still sees her father through

Wonderful conclusion to this series! Answers all of the questions, although some of the answers will turn your stomach. It definitely goes into much more detail about what happened (which the reader already knows what happened from the first two books). I loved the entire Montgomery family, as well as Madeline (and their respective partners). I'm really going to miss reading about them!

It only just occurred to me tonight as I was rereading the Stillwater trilogy that I hadn't reviewed it yet read my copies u til they were well worn and dog eared. I'm disappointed in myself for not showing one of my all time favourite authors some justified star action.

This series will tear at your heart strings, make you hold your babies close and require several boxes of tissues.

I cry a lot, I'm definitely a big old scary, ugly crier and this series will just floor you

(Mystery 2007) As usual for me, this is the third of a series, but held together well enough I don't mind missing the first two. in a small Mississippi town, Madeline Barker seeks to find what happened to her father twenty years ago when he disappeared. In the first two books, her stepmother and stepsiblings have been accused, especially her stepbrother, and exonerated (but still suspected). She hires a PI from California, Hunter Solozano, who puts pieces together and eventually finds out what h ...more

So far so good.....

Finally finished the book. But the 3rd book is quite gory for my liking. Still, the book is very good.

I literally couldn't put this book down until I read the last page. There were some definate surprises in store. I've said this in my reviews about the other two books, that I really cared about these characters, and this book didn't change that. I am sad to see them go. Brenda's writing was supurb as always and the ending was satisfying. Its always irritating to be hooked on a series of books only to find you've wasted your investment of time and be let down by the conclusion. Thats so not goin ...more

Of all the books in this series, the relationship between the main characters felt the least 'real' and deep in this one. Maddy's attitude when she finds out what the Montgomerys' did also really annoyed me because she's trusted, loved and been treated wonderfully by them for 20 years and suddenly they've been faking it all? Load of crap. Dead Silence was definitely the best of this series; stick with that one.

In this conclusion to the Stillwater trilogy, the truth comes out into the open and Madeline has to face it head on, whether she likes it or not. Dead Right brings the story line and suspense up a notch when Madeline decides to outsource a private investigator to help her solve the mystery behind her father’s disappearance.

To be totally honest, a case like this SHOULD be left in the hands of an outsider, if only because too many people are too biased about the rest of the people in this small to

2.5 stars. I had no sympathy for the heroine. The story was unsettling due to sexual sadism and other harm to children.

This is the final book in the Stillwater Trilogy. It continues the story about the unsolved death of Lee Barker. Barker was a sexual sadist minister who abused his stepdaughter and others. His wife and step children had something to do with his death and buried the body on the family farm. Madeline was his biological daughter and had no idea that Barker was evil. She

I started this book with a great deal of anxiety and expectations. I knew Madeline wants to discover what happened to her father but I really didn't want her to do that. I wanted her to forget about the whole thing because her family has already suffered so much and she doesn't even realise that.

The people of Stillwater, Mississippi, are asking questions about murder. Again.

Twenty years ago, Madeline Barker’s father disappeared. Despite what everyone else thinks, she’s convinced her stepfamily h

This review is going to be full of spoilers, so be warned.

I was hesitate to read the final book in this series. I knew this story was going to be the closure and the end of Maddy's story, and it took me two books to decide I really did not like Maddy. In the last book when she paid someone to "scare" Ally with the hopes of speeding up the investigation, I couldn't understand why the family continued to make the choices that they made. I do not know why everyone tried to hide the facts from Maddy

Good, although intense, end to this trilogy. The subject matter of what occurred years in the past is some pretty serious stuff and some readers may understandably prefer to skip this series. Bad stuff happens in life and the author managed to use this subject matter to build a compelling story. The character development and relationships were well done. There were some interesting, thought provoking twists. In the midst of all of this, there was a romance in each book.

Ms. Novak brings the "Stillwater Trilogy" to a frenetic, well written and satisfying conclusion. I thoroughly enjoyed this series and would recommend it to any fans of the thriller/suspense/mystery genre.

A great ending to a fabulous trilogy! Madeline annoyed me to no end with her constant denials but Hunter was swoon-worthy and the story was riveting!

Part two of a trilogy. Descriptions and dialogue seemed over-written and repetitive to me. Suspense at the end was well done.

A fitting climax to the Stillwater trilogy. Getting into the mind of one of the criminals was very unpleasant and the ending very scary and exciting, but that s a compliment to the writingyr. There was good closure in Madeline realizing that learning the truth about her father's death was going to be worse than not knowing - a very intriguing idea and well absorbed into the plot. Madeline, with her quirks and the mistakes she made really came to life for me and I completely fell for Hunter - a g ...more

Maddy and Hunter
Despite the delicious wrongness of Maddy's step-father's acts, I think this book failed to meet it's potential. Maddy and Hunter's relationship seemed to drag out, Maddy was kind of whiney and Hunter was so emotionally unavailable it had me occasionally rolling my eyes. Great background, please spend more time on character development. I give it 3 stars.

It was a shocking experience that jump-started Brenda Novak’s bestselling author career.

“I caught my day-care provider drugging my children with cough syrup and Tylenol to get them to sleep while I was away,” Brenda says. “It was then that I decided that I needed to do something from home.”

However, writing was the last profession she expected to undertake. In fact, Brenda swears she didn’t have a
