Erin Hart, Haunted Ground (Scribner's, 2003)
Erin Hart's first novel, Haunted Ground, shows some of the hallmarks of a first novel, but fortunately sheds them as the pages turn, and we end up with quite a fine read here. If you picked this up and couldn't get past the first few pages, press on. Trust me on this.

A local farmer digging peat for fuel in Drumcleggan Bog comes across a woman's head, complete with a full head of red hair. It is not long until the police show up at the scene, then not long after that until Hugh Osborne, a local, shows up, wanting to see if the head is that of his missing wife. His wife had gone into town one day, bought their little boy a pair of new red boots, then disappeared on their way home. Osborne had no alibi and became the chief suspect. However, with no clues, the l...more

When the perfectly preserved head of a red-headed woman is found in an Irish peat bog, archeologist Cormac Maquire and pathologist Nora Gavin delve into both the past and the present to determine the identity. The first mystery intersects with a second: the recent disappearance of a mother and her child in the same rural area in Galway. Admission: I am the sort of reader that only reads mysteries when hooked by another element of the story: a good sense of place, perhaps, or characters for whom ...more

I was impressed with this book in so many ways. Erin Hart did an excellent job telling the stories of two different mysteries. An ancient mystery involving the body discovered in the bog, and a modern mystery as the missing mother and child. The character development was excellent. I enjoyed the Irish history. You can tell the book was well researched. An excellent debut novel. Anyone who likes the Temperance Brennan series written by Kathy Reichs would like Haunted Ground.

OK so far (I'm about half done) this is a great park-your-brain-and-don't-think-about-it-much book.
There's a mystery as to what happened to this man's wife (murdered? left of her own accord?) plus a bit of history behind the appearance of a severed woman's head out of the bog. Who was she? Why was she decapitated? Etc.Etc.
Now that I've finished...

HAUNTED GROUND – VG
Erin Hart – 1st book
When head of a young woman is uncovered in an Irish peat bog, Irish archaeologist Cormac Maguire and American pathologist Nora Gavin are called to investigate. However, they also become involved with landowner Hugh Osborne, whose wife and son have been missing for three years.

In the rural West of Ireland, two famers cutting peat from a bog discover the severed head of a redhaired woman. The find causes quite a stir, as the wife and young son of the local land baron have been missing for the past two years. The head, however, is much older than that, and two archaeologists, Cormac Maguire and Nora Gavin, are called in to investigate its mysterious origins. As they seek to solve the mystery of the redhaired woman, the two also become embroiled in the search for Mina an...more

Erin Hart should be given kudos for creating an interesting world inhabited by fairly interesting people, but should be given a slap on the wrist for employing lazy language throughout the book. Bogs and people's homes are given a great deal of attention (indeed, she has quite a talent with landscape and decor description) but the rest of the book, which is to say, most of the book, is filled with awkward transitions, voice inconsistencies, and clichéd phrases.

Another volume in my attempt to read more mysteries - this one is an archaeological mystery set in Ireland, where a "bog body" has been discovered. The archaeologist and historian involved work on simultaneous mysteries - one set in ancient Ireland, and one in the present. I was impressed by the unique feeling of this book and it actually made me interested in the mystery itself (a small feat).

This was an amazing debut book. It is a keeper. I emailed the author and she emailed a great reply. I do hope to read more of her work.
What I learned from this book is to love and live for each day. Time is precious.

This book was a little slow, but it was a good muder mystery! And, hey, it was set in Ireland. I love Ireland!
Hope you enjoy it! If you do, there is a second with some of the same characters!

A well-written mystery that weaves together history and a rich understanding of human frailty into a cohesive whole. The perpetrator was somewhat obvious, but Hart entertains and informs.

I've read this one multiple times. It's definitely not a cozy. It's very interesting. The story is a mixture of an ancient murder and a modern murder. It's an archaeological mystery.

History, mystery, Ireland, archeology - a fun read. Not fast paced - reads more like a novel than a mystery, but very enjoyable. Erin Hart visited our book group. That was SO FUN.

A little melodramatic, but one of the better crappy mysteries I have read lately. Way better than The Hanover Square Affair, for example, which I am too embarrassed to review.

Very good book! Of course, it is set in Ireland, so I was sure to like it. It is a mystery, with some romance thrown in for good measure.
