Opinião no blog http://howtoliveathousandlives.blogsp...

No trágico d...more

The story behind this book was incredibly intriguing and something I had never really read about.

The plot was good and Etienne is the one person that really had me reading on. Put simply, he was hot.

What I thought really brought it down is the fact that everything that happened was way too convenient. The way in which Belle escapes is just a series of fortuitous events which culminate in her return home and everything is all perfect and hunky dory in the end. I guess that's an oversimplified way...more

Ugh.

Two stars for a good storyline.
Less than one star for everything else.

My "issues" (because we know I have them)
- Set in 1910/ London/ Paris/ New Orleanse. Pearse fell flat by not leveraging the colorful era/ locales instead you really couldn't tell when or where it was until a character told you. (Except Belle did see a cow in the countryside once ...)
- Belle. Was. Annoying. It didn't make sense reading about her supposed uber naivity, then her being super introspective (as though she'd b...more

'Belle' has the potential to be much more, but the lacklustre writing, endless plot twists and thoroughly unlikable main character made it a tedious read.

Subject matter is interesting and uncommon, but Belle as the main character ruins it for me. Her annoying naivety and eagerness to divulge her story to anyone she meets seems out of character for someone who has gone through so much at a young age. Also, her many failed attempts at escape get annoying after a while.

Belle's mother, Annie, menti...more

Belle is a brick of a book, so it took me a few days to roll through. Luckily, having the 5th flu of the year enabled me to curl up in my bed and get lots of reading done. Belle is a fifteen year old girl when she realises that her mother runs a brothel and what that means, and after witnessing the brutal murder of one of the girls she is put into danger. Then while out on the streets, she is abducted and taken to Paris where she is brutally raped by five men then taken to New Orleans where she...more

Belle is Lesley Pearse’s latest book set in 1910 in the East end of London. Right from the very beginning you are introduced to the main character Belle, who is a 15-year-old girl full of innocence despite living in the ground floors of her Mothers Brothel. Belle has no concept of what happens upstairs until one day she see something that changes her life for ever.

Belle’s whole world changes because of this one night. Snatched from the streets near her house and transported against her will int...more

Theres something very intriguing about the seedier side of Victorian London. Belle is set in a brothel in a rat infested court in Seven dials, London. She is a remarkably innocent young woman considering her upbringing, having been shielded from the activities in the cat house, owned by her mother, where she works below stairs, cared for and protected by Mog, maid of all work.

Lifes looking pretty good when Belle meets a new friend, street wise young Johnny, but things are about to take a downwar...more

I have just read this book and it was good form start to finish i couldn't put this book down it is about a girl named Belle and she lives in a whore house with her mum and a lady called Mog and she sees a murder taking place and it's by the most hated man of where they live his name is Kent and he murders this girl called Millie and she is a whore and after he has killed her his kidnaps Belle and takes her to France because that's where he has sold her to another whore house but while she is th...more

I have spent the past couple of days immersed in the story of Belle, and have travelled from the slums of Seven Dials in London to New Orleans via Paris with each and every character and place described beautifully and jumping out from the pages.

Lesley Pearse has long been one of my very favourite authors, she is a true storyteller and this is her at her very very best. Belle begins the novel a a somewhat innocent young girl of fifteen, shielded from the murkiness of the world she lives in by h...more

It lies somewhere, where you can't tell it good or bad...probably after reading Trust me by Lesley, I expected a lot (and then again, the average GoodReads rating for Belle makes you expect a lot)..

Trust me was fatter, and still I completed it in flat 2 days...this one is a long one too (over 500 pages), but in this case they seem endless...in all honesty, by the last 70-80 pages, I was skimming the novel (something I hardly do)...

I don't know why this was written (given she is coming with it's...more

Aw man... Why do I never love the high brow books?? I am a creature of low tastes! Such an easy read... not very well written but not badly written either. Pearse had a story to tell and she doesn't let fancy writing and literary constructs get in the way of her plot. Whatever about the simplicity of the writing Pearse does an amazing job of creating real, believable characters... an amazing job. They all felt so plausible, Kent, Sly, Mog, Annie, Johnny, Lisset... the list goes on...

A really enjoyable though quite harrowing book. I've read all books by this author but this one really appealed to me, because the plot involved a very young girl being forced into prostitution, which is how my own novel starts. However, the character in this book, Belle, did not escape. This novel exposed the terrible reality of victims caught up in human trafficking and it was quite awful. I felt deeply sympathetic for this girl - and as this hideous trade still continues to exist in the moder...more

A very engaging read, the setting really reminded me of Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (IB HL English Literature, hurray). Very interesting as well... haven't read anything similar before. There were some things I liked about this book, and many things which I disliked. The writing could be improved and the way Belle's character was developed seemed quite unrealistic. I didn't know whether to give this 2 stars, 3 stars or 4, but in the end, I decided that the intriguing plot and the refreshing...more

This is a historical story about a young woman who has been raised in a Victorian/Edwardian brothel in London near Covent Garden. Her mother is the madam. She witnesses a murder of one of the girls and is later snatched and sold into prostitution by the murderer. She ends up being sold on to a brother in New Orleans. The story follows Belle's adventures and ups and downs for 2 years.

The character is young, just 16 when she is first introduced and by the end of it, she keeps saying that she's a...more

This was a graphically haunting and realistic portrayal of human trafficking in Europe and the USA during the early 1900's.

While I enjoyed the book and it was a quick read, the story was difficult to read at many parts as myself a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. I admired Belle's fighting spirit, as like her, I wouldn't give up on being free of my abusive situations and those responsible. So I had a lot of sympathy and understanding of Belle's experiences as I went through the book.

The book...more

So very different from Stolen, and yet, just as wonderfully written.
Belle is one of those books that you are rooting for her all the way, then at the end, you feel like chastising her for being so naive.
I'm also not big on historical books, they really have to be interesting to pull me in completely, and Belle does just that. It's full of edge-of-the-seat moments, moments of terrifying empathy, moments that you hate to witness but are glad you didn't miss. It's full of so much, characters full...more

Eu continuo rendida a Lesley Pearse.

Infelizmente, um trágico acontecimento l...more

Having never heard of this author, probably one of the few people who have not, I was delighted to find such a wonderful book that she has written. I’m a sucker for historical fiction, especially if the facts are accurate as they are in this book.
The book Belle, written by Lesley Pearse, is about a young lady, the title character, raised in a brothel by her seemingly unloving mother. She is protected from the truth about the business until one of Belle’s friends, a kindly hooker, is murdered by...more

Set in London in 1910, this is about Belle, who has grown up in a brothel where her mother is the madam, but been kept innocent of all that goes on until she witnesses the murder of one of the girls, and is then kidnapped by the killer and taken to France to be sold into prostitution. From there she is sold on to New Orleans and settles into a brothel where she becomes the top girl and learns to enjoy her profession. Meanwhile friends and family are trying to find out what happened to her. It's...more

As I began to read Belle I was instantly hooked...

Belle begins the novel as an innocent young girl of fifteen, shielded from the reality of the world she lives in by her Mother and her housekeeper Mog. This all changes when she finds herself the only witness to a brutal murder, she is snatched from the street and her 'education' into the dark, violent underworld of prostitution and crime begins.

Belle is a very long book yet it really does engage the reader, I found it difficult to put it down as...more

Lesley Pearse is one of the UK's best-loved novelists with fans across the globe and sales of over 2 million copies of her books to date. A true storyteller and a master of gripping storylines that keep the reader hooked from beginning to end, Pearse introduces you to characters that it is impossible not to care about or forget.
