Per Gina Robertson:

The answer to the question 'what must I have for life to be meaningful or to be happy?' can reveal what our idols are. Anything other than God is a cheap substitute. Book centered on obbedience to first commandment (no other gods before me). Idol can be misplaced priority, or anything that causes us to sin or not obey God. Focuses on heart transformation, discerning our underlying reasons for sinful behavior = usually comes down to the fact that we don't believe God can make u...more

MY REVIEW:

With simple clarity, Idols of the Heart explains how we can put anything - sinful or not - as an item of worship in our life, therefore becoming a carved wooden idol of our heart. Fitzpatrick shows how all of our sins can be followed back to a choice to put our own desire ahead of God's will for our life. She not only explains this in terms that anyone can understand, but also give illustrations and practical questions to walk you through applying this knowledge to your own heart. This...more

I like the book, but sometimes wonder if all the introspecting is completely healthy? We are already so self-centered. The goal of the book is to move us away from this and all things that compete with the place meant for God alone in our hearts--- THAT is something with which I have no quarrel. I only wonder at the methods we employ. Is this really what it takes and what God would have us work through to resolution of our heart's idolatries? Maybe so. I am considering a Bible study using this b...more

I really enjoyed this book. I didn't always like the author's examples, but I felt that the overall theme of the book was really portrayed. I know God definitely used this book to grow me in my walk with Him, and I'm very grateful to have read this book, especially since it's very applicable to my every day life.

This is an excellent book. Another one that I would like to read again. I recommend it to every one I know but be forewarned- this is the kind of book that reads you and can be quite painful! I learned so much about idolatry and my own heart in this book. I would like to read more on this topic.

We all look for happiness in other places than with the Lord. We want what we don

I read this a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. I am reading it again and look forward to going through it with the church ladies this spring. David Powlison writes, of this book demonstrating "how 'false gods' generate the garden-variety sins of irritability, self-pity, escapism, and anxiety, as well as anger, despair, and panic. Fitzpatrick shows how Jesus Christ retakes our lives from these idols, setting up his reign over our attention, loyalty, and affections." I like how this book...more

Loving this book. Good for people who have been part of church for awhile and wonder why God cares about "the Law" and why he desires our worship.

Awesome. Highly recommended

Average. Lots of better stuff out there on this subject.

Re-reading this one while going through track one of NANC Biblical Counseling training. I needed it.

One of the most convicting books (besides the Bible.) Mrs. Fitzpatrick uses Scripture, life experience, and many godly commentators to help anyone overcome an idol. Defiantly recommend this to all my family and friends!

Deep. Real. Convicting. And some really good Biblical counsel. This book is like sitting down with a counselor and finding that God really does give us all we need in His word pertaining to life and godliness. There is hope and His name is Jesus!

Idols of the Heart is not a riveting read, but it is very informative and has many useful takeaways. I don’t agree with every statement in the book, but it does a good enough job at tackling a topic that is convicting, and necessary.

I don't know if we can ever get enough of the kind of godward redirection found in this book. We all struggle with desires that we let control us. This book points us back to God who is really in control.

We were going thru this in our ladies' Bible study group. I had to quit before it was all done and so am still working thru it. It is a very good book - very convicting but very good.
Elizabeth
This book was a challenging read. It forced me to reconsider many of the priorities in my life as I evaluated what idols I have erected in my life.

They are definately there. Our summer Bible study book...I definately have been altered already and haven't even finished yet.

There are a lot of grammatical errors in this book. I think I would have appreciated it more if the book had been edited.
Doug
Taking this book to heart will result in greater joy in God and greater steadiness of heart

“The only way that we can avoid the sin of idolatry is by immersing ourselves in Spirit-enlightened study of God through the Scripture.” 5 people liked it
“Let us be so taken up with the knowledge of God's goodness and the desire to fellowship with Him that our emotions are warmed and our outer man reflects great love. Although we must not seek emotional experiences for their own sake, we must not shun them merely because others misuse them or ignore God's instructions on worship.” 3 people liked it
