I had a bad August.

A very bad August.

As bad as pickle juice on a cookie.

As bad as a spider web on your leg.

As bad as the black parts on a banana.
I hope your August was better.

I really do.

When Eleanor's beloved babysitter, Bibi, has to move away to take care of her ailing father, Eleanor must try to bear the summer without Bibi and prepare for the upcoming school year. Her...more

I have just started the book Like Pickle Juice On A Cookie by Julie Sternberg. Like Pickle Juice On A Cookie is a very short book. It is also a bluebonnet. In my opinion it's a very good book, not only because it is short. But, even though it is short, doesn't mean it's not a chapter book, the words are big so there are a lot of pages. I like this book because it really relates to me and I understand what is going on. The main character, well I haven't got to the part where I had her name but th...more

I just finished Julie Sternberg's Like Pickle Juice on a Cookie and I absolutely positively LOVED IT!!!!!
In this book, Eleanor an eight- year- old girl has a babysitter, Bibi who is moving away to take care of her sick father.
Eleanor doesn't like this idea and wishes it is just a bad dream and sooner or later she'll wake up, but that does not happen.
Later in the story Eleanor gets and meets new friends and begins to love her new babysitter, but not too much. Because she will always have that sp...more

I finish the book like Like Pickle Juice on a Cookie 2 weeks ago, The theme of this book is if your used to somebody its hard to let go. Text clues to support my theme idea are, when Bibi left Eleanor said '' This is the worst day of my life ''. Another text clue is when Eleanor said '' I won't do that, it reminds me to much of Bibi '' Eleanor really missed Bibi. Eleanor couldn't stop thinking of Bibi, another text clue is when she wouldn't let her new baby sitter do anything that reminded her o...more

I have recently read Julie Sternbergs Like Pickle Juice on a cookie. In this book the girls baby sitter moves away. She is unable to get over it. I think that if I were to have my baby sitter move away to help her sick mother I would be sad for a while then get over it in a few days. This book has verry few words and lacks deatail. It was a verry childish book and could be inproved in many ways including deatail because it needs more discripton. It needs more evedince why her baby sitter was spe...more

I recently finished reading Like Pickle Juice On A Cookie by: Julie Sternberg. I really like this book because when something bad happens there is something good to replace it such as when she looses her baby-sitter and then over time she starts to like her new baby sitter. It is also very descriptive because it goes over words more than once in different text around it. This book is told in 1st person and I usually like these types of books because its usually much more detailed and descriptive...more

Recently I have finished Like Pickle Juice on a Cookie by Julie Steinberg. This book is about a little girl named Eleanor who has to let her baby-sitter Bibi go away to help her dad. When Bibi leaves a new baby-sitter has to come who's name is Natalie, but Eleanor isn't happy about that. I really liked this book because it has so many different things going on, but they are all connecting to one main idea. The author really made it very interesting to read because of how she wrote it , and how s...more

August has been a very bad month for Eleanor. Her longtime babysitter Bibi must move away, and everything Eleanor does reminds her of Bibi. Eleanor writes a letter to Bibi telling her how much she misses her, and then she waits for the response. Meanwhile, her parents have found a very competent babysitter named Natalie. But things just aren't the same. There are many things to like about this book: I loved Eleanor's honest voice, her clear way of stating her feelings, and her sometimes passive/...more

Elenore's babysitter, Bibi, moves away. Bibi was Elenore's babysitter for her first eight years, so she is understandably crushed. She says it is like pickle juice on a cookie - as someone who packed her lunch, I totally understand that statement - it sucks when that happens.

Like Pickle Juice on a Cookie is a good book for any child who has had a friend move away. I've always been the friend who moves away, so this book did give me a different perspective. It is also a great read for getting rea...more

Eleanor's life is turned upside down when her life-long babysitter Bibi moves to Florida to care for an elderly father. Told in short chapters of free verse, Like Pickle Juice On a Cookie would be an excellent book for any reader dealing with separation from a family member or a loved one. In the words of Eleanor, Bibi moving "is as bad as somebody dying."

It seems like there is nothing for Eleanor to do at first. Her friends are all gone for the summer. All the fun things she used to do remind...more

Recntly I have started reading, like Pickle Juice On a Cookie by Julie Steinberg. This book is about a little girl named Elenor and how she has to let her favorite babysiter Bibi leave town to help her father. Elenor isn't to happy about Bibi leaving, because they were the best of friends and didnt know who to play with until a new babysittter comes who's name is Natalie.

When I picked up this book I couldnt even blink because it was so good and intresting how the author wrote it. It is funny, h...more

This weekend I finished Like Pickle Juice on a Cookie by Julie Sternberg. Eleanor is a seven year old girl who has a super special bond with her babysitter Bibi. But soon Bibi has to move away. When this happened I knew how Eleanor felt. Mostly because the book told me she had spent her whole life with Bibi and I understood why she felt upset and sorrowful when her parents told her Bibi was leaving because everyone misses someone at some point in life. When her new babysitter, Natalie comes she t...more

"Like Pickle Juice On A Cookie" is a short easy book to read about a girl named Eleanor and her babysitter who moved away. Eleanor had her sitter for whole life and is definitely not ready for her to go now. I thought that the way she waited and waited was a really good part to the story. Missing someone is a feeling everyone can relate to. It showed that she really loved her. The author described Eleanor as a sweet little girl who can be stubborn when she wants to. She would be someone I wouldn...more

A cute book. This books is simple with some cute line drawings to add to the story. The story starts out with the parents telling a little girl some bad news. She finds out her beloved babysitter is moving away. She is devastated. For the first little bit, her mom takes some time off from work and stays with her so she won't be so sad. Then they find her another babysitter and she goes through the process of comparing this new girl to her beloved, Bibi. In the end Bibi sends her a letter and the...more

Every child at some point can relate to experiencing the discomfort of saying good-bye to a friend, relative, babysitter or teacher who moves away. It's a universal problem most children face at some point in their life, why even adults, too!

In Like Pickle Juice on a Cookie, Eleanor is not happy when her beloved babysitter, Bibi, moves away. Each day is a struggle because whatever she does or wherever she goes, she's reminded of Bibi. After her mom takes some time off from work, she announces sh...more

"I had a bad August. A very bad August. As bad as pickle juice on a cookie. As bad as a spiderweb on your leg. As bad as the black parts of a banana. I hope your August was better. I really do" Ellie explains.

Ellie's parents just told her that Bibi, the only babysitter Ellie has ever known, has to move away to care for her ill father. Ellie must now spend the remainder of her summer adjusting to her new sitter, Natalie. Will she survive? Pick up this Texas Bluebonnet nominee to find out.

When Eleanor's babysitter Bibi moves far away, Eleanor is devastated. Life without her favorite person is hard. Everything Eleanor used to like to do is now unpleasant and sad because it reminds her of Bibi. It's awful - way worse than pickle juice on a cookie. Things get even worse when Eleanor's parents hire a NEW babysitter.

Written in verse, this short, charming novel explores loss in a fresh way - no one dies; Bibi has only moved away and still cares very much about...more

I originally picked this one up to read for inclusion in my booktalks for SRC but didn't include it because I didn't think it had enough pizzaz and the storyline was very narrow in appeal. Eleanor is not happy because the babysitter she has had her whole life is moving to another state. She has to get used to another one before school starts.

It's an okay story, fast read, but I found myself wondering if my 2nd-going-into-3rd grader would "talk" in the same way if he were telling the same kind of...more

Eleanor loves her babysitter, Bibi! She is so upset about her favorite and only babysitter is moving. Who is she going to play with, eat pizza with, ride bikes with? Her mom is also saddened by the news, so she takes some time off to help Eleanor get through the heartbreaking news. After some time off Eleanor and her mom are forced to deal with the loss and find someone new to babysit. Along comes Natalie to help take care of Eleanor while her parents work. Eleanor quickly realizes that things w...more

I loved this book and the great voice of the main character. What an amazing story for a 2nd or 3rd grade girl. The author has completely captured how small Incidents are so important to children. Eleanor's only babysitter ever is moving to Florida and she doesn't think life will ever be good again. This fast reading chapter book is told in verse and perfectly chronicles Eleanor's anxiety while adjusting to life without Bibi, her sitter. Amy Hest's review on the back of the book says it all........more

In Like Pickle Juice On A Cookie , a young girl named Eleanor loses her babysitter, Bebe, when Bebe goes to help her sick grandpa . Eleanor later gets a new babysitter ,but Eleanor at first did not act nice to her even though she tried to be the best she could , but later their relationship grows . I like this book because not only did the author describe the characters in a way that made me feel like they were right next to me, but also she made the book relatable to other peoples' lives, like...more

This Bluebonnet nominee is very cute, and I think second grade girls who are strong readers will really enjoy Ellie's commentary on how tragic life is now that her lifetime babysitter has moved away. The character is charming because I can totally see her nailing a second grade mentality with her end of the worldness! I think I have seen my own daughter act that way about certain things. The one thing that bothers me is the way it is written in free verse. I don't like the spacing with the quote...more

Recently I read "Like Pickle Juice on a Cookie." The genre is poetry, and so far it is one of my favorite poetry books I've read. The main character named Elenore had a babysitter named Bibi. Bibi has to leave because her grandmother got sick, so Elenore's mother has to call a new babysitter named Natalie. The author does a really good job of establishing the setting and describing the characters through their actions. The story reminds me of my cousin who always comes to town and wants to try s...more

I had a bad August. A very bad August. As bad as pickle juice on a cookie. I hope your August was better. I really do. This is the start of a very dear book about Eleanor whose first babysitter Bibi is moving away to Florida to care for her sick father. Nothing is going to be the same and things that used to make Eleanor happy remind her of Bibi. But as August rolls on Eleanor begins to realize that even though things have changed, there are still new things to enjoy. I found myself just sighing...more

It's the summer before third grade when Elinor receives terrible news, news worse than pickle juice on cookies. Bibi, the best babysitter in the world is moving away. Elinor doesn't want to do anything fun without Bibi, because fun things remind her of Bibi. But soon her parents have found a new sitter, Natalie. And while Natalie is not Bibi, maybe that will be okay. This sweet book is shorter than it seems and Cordell's fun illustrations bring whimsy and life to the page. Great for lovers of Iv...more

Eleanor's beloved babysitter has moved far away to care for her elderly mother, and nothing will ever be the same for Eleanor again. Even when her parents hire a perfectly nice young woman to care for Eleanor, she pines for her Bibi to come back, or at least send a letter. Her sadness is entirely believable and will resonate with kids' who've lost someone important in their lives. It is spot-on perfect for third and fourth grade readers, who will appreciate both Eleanor's worries and the efforts...more

Love and loss and new friendship written in short, almost poem-form, for new readers, but just as good for an old, sad bird like myself. I think that's sort of the point, that just because you're a new reader doesn't mean you don't have very very complicated feelings about things, and this book does a wonderful job of making them real. It was the Center for Children's Books Gryphon award book, and I can see why it got it - it's great, smart, hopeful, and not trying to sell you anything. Thank go...more

When Eleanor learns that Bibi her babysitter is moving to Florida to care for an elderly father, she is devastated. She said it's like pickle juice on a cookie. While her parents try to cheer her up with activities, friend visits and the like, it takes her new sitter, Natalie, to make her smile again. Natalie knows that Eleanor misses Bibi, but she tells her that she's not there to replace her, but she wants Eleanor to know that she'll be there for her.

This is a fast read and would be a hit for...more

Eleanor is having a very bad summer. Her babysitter, Bibi, has moved away. Her parents force her to get another babysitter, Natalie. Natalie is not Bibi, but she understands what Eleanor is going through. By the end of the summer, Eleanor has accepted Natalie and had a letter from Bibi so things are looking up.

This is a fun little book. I really enjoyed Eleanor's story. The verse works really well and definitely translates what Eleanor is going through. I also enjoyed the illustrations. They ar...more

Everyone in the world knows the pain of having to say goodbye to someone they love. It's one of those universal levelers that make all peoples equal. Whether it's a parting of friends or a death of a loved one, no matter the age, the pain is real and tender. Books about saying goodbye are plentiful. There are books like Neil Armstrong is My Uncle and Other Lies Muscle Man McGinty Told Me that deal with a friend that has moved away and the hole that can leave in some...more
