This was a fun read, trite and predictible but fun. It was really nice to read some fluff for a change, after recently reading several heavier books. It started out kind of stupid but once I realized it was a satire and not meant to be taken seriously, and that it was actually making fun of every single character in it, I enjoyed it a whole lot more.

Plum Sykes brings us back into the upper echelon of New York society with The Debutante Divorcee, a story about rich, young brides, even richer and younger divorcees, and the fabulous lives they lead. The main character, Sylvie, is newly married to a man she's only known six months. Though she's fabulously happy and basking in the afterglow of her wedding, she starts to doubt her husband's commitment when he cancels their honeymoon and starts working long hours. She befriends Lauren, the head of...more

Eh. I liked Bergdorf Blondes well enough, but this book was not much fun. It opens with the narrator's assertion that "Married girls in New York these days put almost as much effort into losing husbands as they once did into finding them," and it just gets more depressing from there. It follows the marriages, divorces, and other social activities of a group of obscenely wealthy women living in Manhattan. Unfortunately, they're all vapid, self-absorbed, whiny, juvenile, and g...more

not as good as berdorf blondes, i think it was a little short in scope. i wanted more of the characters, and the ending was a little trite. then again, i hold plum sykes to a higher standard than most chick lit authors, so i don't know. this book deals with the more 30 year old manhattan socialite scene, rather than the 20 year olds of berdorf. plenty of fashion name dropping, loads of new york references and hot spots, hilarious thing...more

I say read, but really it was only partially read.
I couldn't do it.
The characters were too self centered and unrelateable (is that a word?) for me to care enough to read. I read Bergdorf Blondes years ago and enjoyed it and was looking forward to finally reading this one. I think my interest in this subset of American genre has worn off. I probably would have loved this book a few years ago when I couldn't get enough of books about women living in NY with lots of expensive clothes, nigh...more

Another one I listened to on my commute. It was OK, I really couldn’t relate to living on the upper west side and wearing diamonds while I play at the beach- wish I could! Silvia, recently married becomes friends with the debutante Divorcee. She moves to NYC where she suddenly is best friends with everyone she meets and they all act like they've been friends for years. The chaos begins with husband huntresses and flaky rich girls.
F-bomb warning.

What a chick lit book should be. Cute, at times silly and vapid, but in the end, you're rooting for the characters.

I was reading this book at a sandwich shop in Cambridge and some high-falutin' patrons began whispering to each other about my taste in books. Their disdain actually made me like the book more. The Debutante Divorcee's greatest strength, I think, is its unyielding frivolity and silliness. Too bad, however, that Sykes' inane storytelling formula of fashionable and rich New York girls traveling the world to find love worked better in Bergdorf Blondes.

No one.
Wish I could give a half star, because this book was bloody awful. Bergdorf Blondes, though also superficial, chick-lit lite, did a much better job at the same thing. In this book, it seems as if Sykes is desperately trying to pad a 20 page story (and not a good one, at that) into a full-length novel. I like brainless books as much as the next beachgoer, but this was, to use Sykes' own word--beyond. Like, beyond beyond bad.

I actually listened to the audio cd version of this book.
I really liked the narrator of this book, her voices were fantastic and I really felt the characters. I thought the storyline was cute - definitely not a life-changing, profound novel, but I enjoyed it! There were a couple of twists at the end that I wasn’t expecting. Overall, this I would really recommend listening to the audio version of this book.

it's bout hi-society of new york. the kinda girl that we think only exist in our wildest dream, but they do exist!! n if u look from the surface, they're pretty shallow.. but of course u gotta dig deeper, cos they ain't no different than us... i think the lessons bout this book is, u have 2 see things from different perspectives to understand things better. n one important lesson, be careful with ur guy ;)

"I can't do it Captain!" I can't finish this book, it is that terrible. If I want to hear about fab fashion, I'll read Harper's Bazaar. If I want to hear about fab vacation homes, I'll look at Architectural Digest. I CAN NOT deal with any more of Sykes "characters". If this is "chick-lit", or as some authors of the genre like to say, "chic-lit", then count me out.

A delightfully indulgent adult fairy tale set in New York. This is pure fluff & fantasy - no one with this much money could be this shallow and delightfully endearing at the same time! Taken at face value, it's a fun grown-up fairy tale of frivolity. A tad predictable, but aren't all fairy tales? Perfect for a summer escape!

picked this up hungover in the vegas airport thinking it would be a lovely little guitly pleasure, a nice dish, etc. it's a total piece of shit. and not in a 'it's so bad it's good' sort of way. it's just BAD. overall sylvie, the protagonist, is a very poorly constructed character. nothing to see here folks, move along....

Here's the thing... A while ago I read her other book, Bergdorf Blondes. I remember thinking it was fun and clever. Obviously nothing mind bending or life changing. But I like this type of book. So I picked this one up and I really didn't like it as much. It was okay, but that's all I can really say for it.

I found this and a bunch of books for “sale” at Good Will. I really enjoy Romance books that I learn about a foreign society and culture and this book certainly was that the upper crest, New Yorker, a life I will never know and never want to know. I little predictable but it was okay.

Sylvie Mortimer has just married and is blissfully happy with The Divine New Husband, Hunter. Sylvie's new friend, Lauren Blount, is very rich, very young, very thin, very pretty -- and very, very divorced.
I really enjoyed reading this book and plan to read more by this author.

A good summer don't have to think about it read! Like Bergdorf Blondes, this one is filled with vapid, silly society girls. The things they worry about are so inane, but it's fun to read (and fantasize that you're in that world too!). I'd say it's a good beach book.

Chick lit, but some of the best. Plum Sykes is a socialite, and the characters and their antics are based on her experiences. It's a fun inside look at the rich and shallow, and her writing is laugh-out-loud funny. This is a good airport or beach read.

single girl looking for a pick me up
So, I needed a pick me up badly - it was an indulgent day. And instead of indulging in chocolate, i indulged with a day at the spa, and an early evening with a bottle of wine, this book, and then reading in bed. Quick and easy - but surprisingly feel good!
