This book really has a mixture of fun, sad and scary things ! When I started reading it, which was on my summer vacations, I liked it so much, I couldn't stop reading it. I think I read it in two days. It's so fantastic, how April, Melanie, Marshal, and then Elizabeth, and the two boys Toby and Ken create a society, which grows and grows. This book felt so magic. I already had a sort of Egypt fixation when this book was read to me for the first time in 3rd grade. But this book took that fixation to a whole new level. For years, I read it over and over again. It...affected me. Because it implied that I wasn't the only dorky, bespectacled youth out there pouring over books about the mummification process (they pulled the brain out through the nose? awesome!), requesting that their mother construct 3D pyramind birthday cakes, and naming the neighbor's stray...more

Great book! So many layers - family issues, friendships, imagination, social issues, and creepy suspense. April was such a great character, reacting to feeling abandoned by her mother with her creative use of false eyelashes. Thank goodness Melanie was her friend, and didn't let April wear those eyelashes to school!
I love all the details about the game, with everyone using their imaginations to recreate an Egyptian temple and all the rituals. All the relationships between the kids are so funn...more

This book is very captivating. It is filled with mystery, suspense, and many funny moments. I would recommend it to anyone who would want a break from reading other books.

All small people should read this book. I was obsessed with this in 4th grade, when I was sure I was going to grow up to be an archeologist. The book convinces kids that history is awesome. Which it is.

The Egypt Lovers

Would you ever think a fun, interesting game would start to make strange and mysterious things to happen? In my book “The Egypt Game”, April, Melanie, and Marshall are the main characters. They are kids that are really smart and creative. Mostly the set is taken place in the professor’s backyard basement, where April, Melanie and Marshall start to play a fun and mysterious game at the same time. In the start of the game everything is fine, but suddenly weird and strange things start to happen with the game. At first April had a negative attitude of living with her grandma, but later she had a positive attitude because she ha made new friends and she liked living with her grandma. Read on to find out the mystery of The Egypt Game. Is the game really making the strange things happen or is it someone else?
Helpfully April plays an elegant part in my book. She is an anxious person about The Egypt Game, so that gives her success in the game. April is also an extraordinary kind person to people. She is a very helpful person by babysitting and helping her friends. One type of evidence of April being kind is that she never makes fun of people and she helps a lot of people in many different ways. Kind April is a really important character.
Large and busy Orchard Avenue is a mysterious and creepy street to live at. In this street there are a lot of buildings and businesses. In Orchard street there are a lot of busy cars and people. The story also takes place when it's dark or in dark rooms. One example from the text is that says that the setting takes place in a large, busy, university town in Orchard Avenue.Another example is that where the kids meet for their meetings it is kind of dark.When the setting takes place in a dark place, like in the basement or street, I feel kind of spooked because I feel like something bad might happen.Huge Orchard Avenue is a strange and scary street or place to be at.
In “The Egypt Game” six anxious kids start playing a game named The Egypt Game, but then strange things start to happen, while playing the game. The main conflict in my book is that a murder occurs and almost everyone thinks that the professor is the murderer, so barely anybody is buying from his A-Z Antique Store.The most significant events in my book are when April starts to read about Egypt and she's really interested in it, so she tells Melanie to also read about Egypt. So, April and Melanie decide to come up with The Egypt Game.
Later, a murder occurs and people think that it's the professor. Then, April, Melanie, Marshall and a new member in the game had to stop playing The Egypt Game because their guardians didn't let them go out to play and only to go to school. After awhile, their guardians started to let them go outside again.Then, they got two new members named Toby and Ken.Toby had decided that they should do ceremonies, where they will write down a secret question that nobody would know what it was. Later, the next day someone would be assigned to give a pretend answer, but instead every time they found an answer on the back of the paper, where the question was written at.
Then, when April stayed babysitting Marshall they went to the professor's basement and the murderer tried to catch them, but the professor yelled help,so he left. After that, the police came and asked Marshall who the was the person that he head seen try to catch them was and then the police found out that it wasn't the professor. Later,the professor told the kids that he had written the answers. The story builds up by first just having one mystery of the murderer, but then it turns out to have two mysteries, so then the book makes you think deeper about the mysteries. The conflict was solved by the murderer trying to get April and Marshall, and Marshall telling the police who the murderer was. Inside my book there was a story about eager kids that play a mysterious game.
"The Egypt Game" had been doing some some strange things, but it all turned out to be the professor. My book The Egypt Game is a a good book because the mysteries make you think deeper. I also like it because it reminds me when I was learning about Egypt last year. I think that all the characters in this book are great, but I think that the most important character is April because without her " The Egypt Game" wouldn't have started or been made. I think that the way the Author describe the setting being large and busy, it seemed like Orchard Avenue. might be in Lo Angeles. I really liked the plot especially the mysteries because they made me think a lot and they got me interested in the book.April and Melanie remind me of myself because when I was in 6th grade and I started to read about Egypt I was also interested in it. So, come on read this mysterious story, the mysteries and more will grab you and you will just want the mysteries to be solved as fast as it can.

The plot of my book is that everybody wants to help but with many opinion .The main conflict of The Egypt Game was that the friends got mad for not listening to each other & sticking together.The climax is that they get to travel all around Egypt because thanks to April they found a game that they never new before.The conflict get solve byworking together & having respect with one onotherThis is how the plot got solved.

April started out rough but know look at her she is happy that she decided to stay with her.The Egypt Game is a book that helps the reders understand what a good writing is.April reminds me of someone who is nice and helpful. ...less

A Newbury Honor Book? Really? While this was an interesting story, I found the children to not behave in the manner of actual children - speaking wisely beyond their years and with adult emotions - emotions we might like them to have, but that for the most part, they do not.

Interesting to note that the NY Times Book Review (quoted on teh inside cover) says the author "[presents:] contemporary children as they talk and act on their own." Yeah, I don't think so.

Listened to this one with the boys on CD. Narrator was really good. I was a lot like the main character April Hall growing up wearing fake fur, hair done up in a twist and daring to wear fake eyelashes to school. Only difference was that my mother wasn't an actress who shipped me off to live with my grandmother.

I lost my school library's copy of this book and had to pay for it. The worst part was I never found the copy. I really wanted a copy of this book to keep. The story is great. It chronicles the lives of children living in Berkley who create a game centered around Ancient Egypt. I first read this book when I was eleven or twelve and loved it. I wouldn't have remembered the title, or the author, but I recognized it immediately when I saw it in the "kids used books" section of our local bookstore, and I bought it for Laura. She hasn't read it yet, but I read it again and liked it just as much as the first time around.

I really enjoyed this book when I was a kid. A pretty eclectic group of kids gets together to play this make-believe game about Egypt. I can't say I remember the details too clearly, beyond one of the girls having just moved to town. She's a little peculiar (I think her mother is some kind of movie-star, but her home-life is strange and she's just moved in with some relatives).
