Cuciamo un po' (veramente non sono capace e non mi interessa neanche imparare, però facciamo finta che io sia capace). Abbiamo un buco, ed ecco che oltre a questo abbiamo anche ago e filo. Direi che il mio primo incontro con Fante è andato più che bene, ho adorato "Il mio cane Stupido", l ho trovato persino troppo corto. Lo stile di Fante mi piace alla follia , tanto che mi era venuto in mente di cominciare anche i suoi romanzi riguardo Arturo Bandini, così, subito, e mi stavo giusto dirigendo verso la libreria a prenderne il volume, ma poi mi sono detta che non avrei dovuto bruciare tutto e subito, perché un libro del genere è un piccolo regalo ,e va assaporato, con calma,va lasc...more
Siccome io ormai i libri di Fante li compro a scatola chiusa (senza leggere recensioni o quarte di copertina prima) perché mi fido ciecamente di lui, la sorpresa è stata notevole: A ovest di Roma, infatti, contiene il romanzo Il mio cane Stupido e anche un bellissimo racconto, L’orgia. Fatti il cane! Prima che lui si faccia te o chiunque altro attraversi il giardino di casa. E non è uno scherzo. Come non lo è dire che questo libro fa ridere tanto. Fino a metà, almeno. 'Al oeste de Roma' está formado por una novela corta ('Mi perro Idiota') y un cuento largo ('La orgía'). 'La orgía' es un cuento fresco, directo y divertido, escrito con gran economía de medios, sobre el fin de la inocencia de un niño. Las emociones del niño está muy bien descritas y es un buen relato. Sin embargo, no es ni mucho menos de lo mejor que ha escrito John Fante.

L'abito non fa il monaco, ma la macchina da scrivere non fa lo scrittore.
Ad esempio io potrei fare la scrittrice.
Ad esempio, essendo io una personcina versatile e con mille interessi (praticamente una cialtrona), potrei scrivere un romanzo che spazia dall'interessantissimo quesito "Perché esisto?" al perché gli spaghetti vanno messi a raggiera nell'acqua che bolle.
Però ne verrebbe fuori un frullato, se proprio voglio essere ottimista un frappè multivitaminico.
Eh, la classe non è acqua.

Très marrante ce récit d'un homme perdu dans ses tribulations, entre sa nature, ses enfants, son chien, une baleine, etc ...
Henry J. Molise est un auteur raté, pathétique. Marié et père de 4 enfants, il ne demanderait pas mieux que de quitter sa vie actuelle pour vivre à Rome, terre de ses ancêtres. Alors qu'il rentre chez lui, un soir d'orage, il découvre dans son jardin un très gros chien (s'avérant être obsédé) qui va vite s'incruster dans sa maison mais aussi sa vie. Sa famille déjà en crise n'en sera qu'encore plus déchirée....

Fante riesce a trasmettere attraverso la pagina scritta le emozioni, i conflitti e le contraddizioni del vivere quotidiano.
Gli affetti familiari, le piccole gioie e le frustrazioni, il desiderio di fuga e il radicamento irrinunciabile alle abitudini e alle proprie cose: nei suoi libri si trova questo ed altro ancora.
Il tutto narrato in una prosa vivace e variegata, che non finisce mai di deliziare e stupire.

Alors qu'il semble avoir tous les ingrédients de la recette du bonheur, ça sent un peu le roussi.
Il est écrivain, mais plutôt raté. Ses enfants le respectent à peine (pour ne pas dire pas du tout), sa femme, bin c'est sa femme.....more

This is the first Fante book I have read and I had high expectations as I am a Bukowski fan. I loved how he weaved such a great tale out of what should have been a fairly mundane experience. Both stories are good but I was more partial to My Dog Stupid because I love a protagonist who is an asshole and knows it too.

during his career, he spent most of his time writing and rewriting screenplays to pay the bills and the few novellas he put out later in life are a real treat-- efficient yet startlingly vivid. this is a showcase of his mastery of this art form. it seems effortless how it reads like a film as he marries economy and a keen/stark vision. this is a story about a dog.
I didn't particularly care for My Dog Stupid. I actually disliked it but it was a quick read and I felt like reading so I finished it. This is unusual for me recently. I am not in the habit of not finishing books I'm not liking. I put down 100 years of Solitude with less than 100 pages to go. I did 400 pages of Ulysses recently before saying enough (for now, I'll finish that one eventually). I am about 8 years in to American Tragedy and unless I get stuck on 6 airplanes with no other books I pro...more
time and again i amazed by the power of john fante's plain language and deep meaning behind it, the back-breaking burdens of just existing that he manages to squeeze into his novels and short stories is nothing less than heartachingly gorgeous. it is the writing of a constantly shamed catholic, lapsed but not reprogrammed, always second-guessing and apologizing for his very existence. this book was phenomenal.

Two great novellas. Classic Fante and for those who have not read any of his work, do it. Bukowski once stated "Fante is my God"...that about sums it up.
"My Dog Stupid" is (almost) perfect ["almost" just because perfection may not exist on this planet...]
I love the ending of this book.

Fante delivers the very autobiographical character of the scriptwriter and failed novelist who dreams of relocating to Rome. He is a study in ambivalence: he loves his wife yet yearns to leave her, loves his children yet abuses them (verbally) and pushes them out of the house, loves writing yet can't get past being a scriptwriter. je me suis bien régalé de cette histoire douce amère.
derrière la légèreté et la comédie on sens toute la mélancolie du père de famille de la cinquantaine qui à l'impression d'avoir un peu loupé sa vie. les autres personnages sont excellents également, de l'épouse et mère dévouée, aux enfants ingrats au possible jusqu'au chien balourd et aux mœurs....particulières. Un bon moment donc.

Yet another good story from one of my all-time favorite (but, somehow, still lesser known) writers. Good stuff :)

New books on my 'to-read' List.
While browsing in a used book store in Bellingham, WA, I remembered that an acquaintance in Boulder, CO had recommended an author to me. I had written the name on a slip of paper and put it in my wallet. I bought West of Rome on that recommendation. By the end of the night I had finished the book and discovered that Fante attended the same high school I had, in Denver. He's remained one of my favorite writers to this day. This is where it all began for me.
I loved every John Fante book I have read, which is most of his books. Great story telling, some of the best and most original scenes I've encountered, and great showing of the character's thought process in a very organic way. Some of the funniest, and some of the saddest, fiction I've read. Fante is one of Charles Bukowski's heroes.

fun short read
The first novella is much better, and I think is the best thing that Fante did. It's the story of a man at the end of his years who is greatly disappointed in his sons and his dog. What is more amazing is that the story is true and the characters correspond pretty clearly to his actual family. He's a jerk and his sons are spoiled screw-ups. laugh out loud.
