The eighth in the highly enjoyable Tess Monaghan series. In this one, Tess sees another aspect of her Irish Catholic/Jewish background. The client is an orthodox Jew who won't even shake her hand because she is a woman. In trying to find his wife, who has to all intents and purposes flown the coop with his children, Tess uncovers ever deepening layers of deceit and betrayal which ultimately descend into hatred and violence. Some readers have objected to the complexity of the plot and the arc...more

tess gets a client referred by her uncle donald, and meets the peculiar mark rubin, a modern orthodox jew who sells furs.
this was not my favorite lippman. i think my favorite part occurred when whitney showed up, and that was late in the novel. i read these books for tess, not for whole chapters about the people she is looking for, etc. i understand why the story had to be told this way, or at least, why she chose it, but i didn't really care about natalie or lana or zeke at all. i did like...more

I freely admit it: I'm a sucker for people writing about Baltimore accurately and with great affection, but what really makes Lippman's mysteries for me is that the mysteries are so good -- in all three that I've read so far, I haven't seen the endings coming at all, which is rare for me and mystery novels. Two thumbs way up.
(Word of warning: read them in order if you're going to read them; I'm reading them all out of order and it is definitely not the way to go.)

I enjoy all of Laura Lippman's mysteries that I've read--primarily because of the way she fleshes out her detective's personal life and all of the details about Baltimore in the novels. They are always engrossingly suspenseful, without being too scary or bleak. I particularily enjoyed this one, because of the character development of Mark Rubin, an Orthodox Jew, and the developing rapport between he and Tess in spite of their differences.

Not my absolute favorite of hers, but Laura Lippman has an ability to capture the nuances of life in my former home of Baltimore on par with John Waters. She's amazing and a great female author with a flawed but relatable female lead character in Tess Monaghan.

This book was kinda slow at the start, but picked up really well half way through. Not one of my favorites--the story line upset me so I couldn't really enjoy the "mystery." I would rate it PG-13 based on content and language.

This mystery kept my interest and the author did have a lot of twists and turns that I didn't see coming but at the end I just said "That's it?" It had a very weak ending, I will not be reading another of this series again.

Found this at work during the JCC Book Fair. Go figure, another "jewish" discovery. I'm really bad at this. "Sinfeld is Jewish???" Anyway, the orthodox family plot twist was fun. The first non-Tess book I've read and liked it.

Another preposterous plot, the second in a row. I hope that Lippman brings back the supporting cast that made previous Monaghan mysteries fun and kept the story on just this side of plausibility.

Found it increasingly difficult to follow the book's numerous Jewish references. Gave up and stopped reading halfway through.

I always enjoy Laura Lippman's stories but this one lagged a bit. However, she's still one of my favorite suspense writers.

Fun, easily read mystery book, a step above the norm for this genre for sure.
