Picked this up this morning off the shelf of my current roommate. I was awake earlier than usual due to my older son's Sunday Pancake Ambitions (he's 12 and the chef). Not that he requires supervision, I just like being around him happily puttering about in the kitchen cooking for his family, right?
So, I began the book without imagining I'd become so immediately and thoroughly engrossed in it. I cannot put it down (well, I put it down to check in here and write this, I guess).

This collection is informative and interesting. The first two volumes were much easier to get through than the last two. The first two contain information about the British Isles from Antiquity to I believe 1641. It's a pretty neat time in British History as far as I am concerned. The next two books get really heavy into politics and military ventures. It was a little hard for me because I want to know more about the social culture in the country. The last books talks about the American Ci...more

Fun narrative history of England, but just as fascinating to read it to understand Churchill's mindset about history as he focuses on "great men" being the main catalysts for change (versus a combination of social, economic, environmental, etc. factors) and his promotion of a destiny for the Anglo-Saxon-Norman Protestant line of people and the idea of a British Empire. But if you don't want to think that hard, it's a guilty-pleasure history book.

One of the greatest works of history and literature in the english language. Even if your interest in the english speaking peoples and remeber this does only encompass Britain but the former Empire and North America. And all wrapped in Churchill's legenary command of his mother tongue. A simple must have for any self respecting library and at the end of the day a truly entralling and rewarding read.

This is a long read, (4 volumes), but done well enough that it stays interesting. So if you want to know everything about Great Britain going back to its early roots...Anglo Saxon, etc. and through all of those kings/queens, this book is for you.

Mary and I are reading these together. They are interesting (good story telling). They mainly just focus on the political leaders and how they influence history. No social stuff.

This is a must-read for history buffs. Unfortunately, my life got too busy and I didn't get a chance to get through all of it. I will check this one out again when I have more time.

I have read almost every one of Churchill's books. Reading any of them is like going to a technicolor movie.

A stubborn race from the get-go. If you don't know who Boudicca was, you want to.

Churchill's writing style makes it seem much shorter than it is.
