Voted #3 of 100 best mysteries of all time by Mystery Writers of America (www.mysterywriters.org) and see also World Magazine January 12/19, 2008, pg. 27).
I wanted to like it, i really did. It's a classic. And Poe is so respectful of the reader, no dumbing down, an elevated vocabulary, stories that start off grabbing your interest from the first sentence, and each story so unique you are scrambling to figure out what is going on...

There are many volumes of Poe's short stories, and this one doesn't claim to be complete. Nevertheless, it's the one I received for my birthday as an early teenager, and I have enjoyed it throughout the ensuing years. Poe was a master of many different types of stories: some claim he invented the detective story, and his tales of horror are among the strongest ever written in that genre. The one displeyed in the thumbnail isn't exactly the edition I am reading. Mine is a Giunti Classics, and it features more tales. Still, this one is close enough. Poe is a powerful writer, and has an elegance in his prose which is rarely found elsewhere. An eloquent, at times archaic English, and a sense of supernatural that hints rather than say, hreatens, rather than harm, ensnares the rea...more

I think that this book had some amazing writting in it. It was the type of writing that allowed us to see through the eyes of a crazy man

Some of the short stories are excellent: classics in there own right. Unfortunately some a quite average and many suffer from over indulgent introductions which are tiresome and often consume over half of the stories entire length. Also, the collection is so long that by the end you are getting rather sick of Poe's tone.
If there was a shorter version with some of the chaff taken out I would highly recommend that for most readers

I have loved Poe from an early age. I started reading this book in my early teens sometime and read it throughout high school.
My favorite tales of his are "The Gold Bug," a long, interesting, and often unread story of his, "The Masque of Red Death," which has amazing symbolic imagery, and "The Tell-Tale Heart," a classic so well written that you swore you could hear the old man's heart beating, too.

This is a collection of short stories. The reason that I give it three stars is because of how gruesome and horrific some of them are. I actually enjoyed reading the stories, but some of them are strange. This author has a lot of talent in letting you see the minds of his characters. It's even more amazing when it's in short story format.

This is a collection of Edgar Allen Poe's scariest stories, such as The Pit and the Pendulum. They are very dark and gothic, and felt extremely eerie when I was reading them.

I love Poe, and Harry Clarke's illustrations are absolutely stunning. My favorite story is probably Berenice.
