One of my favorite Goytisolo efforts. Paris is under siege, Arabic script has replaced Latin, public toilets are the new lyceum, a pornographer is a prophet and revolutionary. Each section is adorned with an ironic chapter heading, something out of Godard, and yet it never appears tired. These serial riffs, most brief, first-personal and often dreamlike in dimension and continuity, focus on the margins, the estranged. Kinship is constructed outside the codes.

As usual there is a dearth of traditi

A terminally garbled autobio, a multifaceted fabricated confession to revolutionary activities of various dubious natures, a catalogue of perversions, an account of a paris joyfully besieged by immigrants and displaced agitators, a sequence of satiric sciences, a dialogue with the exasperated reader, a love story by omission.

What initially seems to be entirely novel-by-collage, switching gears (and perspectives, and tenses) with a swiftness bordering on unintelligibility, comes into focus as a

Hmmm ? Normally, I am a big fan of such "surrealistic" tales, but that one left me rather cold - maybe the German translation (which, not being fluent enough in Spanish, had to be my choice of language) did some harm to it....

Wohl eher was für Literaturwissenschaftler...
