For the period, this was a pathbreaking work and it shows. It's comprehensive, incredibly well researched, and thanks to Lombardi-Nash, easy to read. I can't stress enough how important this book is for anyone studying homosexuality throughout history. Though some of his medical theories are antiquated by today's standards, Hirschfeld was a serious badass.
