A collection of short stories from various sources, such as the Dark Horse Book of Hauntings and its siblings. All the stories are written by Mike Mignola, and he draws most of them, but P. Craig Russell and Richard Corben provide the artwork for "The Vampire of Prague" and "Makoma" respectively.

This seventh volume of Mignola's wonderful comic Hellboy collects seven tales about the red, hellspawned protagonist set in various time periods of his existence. The stories are "The Penanggalan", "The Hydra and the Lion", the title story "The Troll Witch", "The Vampire of Prague" (illustrated by P. Craig Russell), "Dr. Carp's Experiment" (a little gem concerning mysterious time travelling and a haunted house), "The Ghoul" and f...more

Hellboy goes on all these solo adventures. It was really weird and interesting.

Collection of random Hellboy stories. They don't dissappoint and Mignola's writing and art remain consistantly good in this volume.
This book has two stories that are drawn by other artists, which, though I didn't like it in the first BPRD volume, is really good here.
The second story that is not entirely drawn by Mignola is Makoma, which uses the art of the two artists to transition to a dream sequence of sorts. This is one of the cooler things I have seen done in comics and works v...more

I really enjoyed this series of Hellboy short stories. My favorite was Makoma. Wow, this one was amazing. It's got to be the best story I've read graphically to date. The storytelling, the artistry, excellent. And...it was set and about Africa. It was a beautiful story, one that I did not think possible in today's comic book/graphic novel world. Uttelry refreshing.
Thanks for putting this in my hands, Bryan (Thao Worra).

One star just for the art, which is amazing.
All these wonderful, rich and ancient fairy tales! Ironed out and pinned up as 2d backdrops so Hellboy can come in, punch someone, and run off. Why would a writer keep repeating the same formula like that, always skimming along the surface of these lush, magical stories. Why would people enjoy that, when all you can see is how much better it could be.

This isn't my favorite Hellboy collection, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the stories illustrated by Richard Corben and P. Craig Russell. I'm a big fan of both of these artists, but in general I find Mignola's style so distinctive and so enjoyable that frequently I get impatient when other artists illustrate his stories. Not so in this case, however.

This particular volume is a mixed bag. It collects all the Hellboy shorts from the "Dark Horse Book Of..." series, as well as a piece specifically for this volume, and the two parter, "Makoma". There's some really strong stuff in here, notably "Makoma", "The Troll Witch", and "The Ghoul". The rest is fairly forgettable, but all in all, for such a mixed bag, this is solid.

As with most compilations, this one is hit-and-miss. I do enjoy the way Mignola will take an old folk tale from someplace like central Africa or Norway or Malaysia and then retell it through Hellboy. Probably my favorite in this collection is "Dr. Carp's Experiment", because of the electric harpoons. But Makoma would be a close second.

The thing that bumped this from 4 stars to 5 is the Richard Corben illustrated Makoma story. That story is the absolute gem of this collection. I'm in awe of it still -- I've been picking the book up and flipping through Makoma since finishing the book earlier this evening. Just wonderful, wonderful stuff.

The stories and art are always fun with Mignola. I have always enjoyed the Hellboy books and only on occasion ever was disappointed with the story. The art is always interesting and has the perfect look for the supernatural stories.

This one was a nice surprise, since the majority of the content comes from various anthologies and was new to me. Like the rest of the short-story collections, some are so-so and some are real gems, but all are entertaining.

By far the weakest book in the series. The Richard Corben illustrated "Makoma" is a confusing borefest and the rest of the shorts from The Dark Horse Books of...(Monsters, Witchcraft, etc) just feel like filler.

Interesting to see some different artists' takes on Hellboy. Mignola's lead-ins are giving me some great suggestions for graphic novels and books to read when I'm done with the series.

A fun little collection of one-off stories. Not as good as the previous volume, but still enjoyable.

Not the best volume of Hellboy stories but some great little tales nonetheless.
