this book is definitely the work of fiction, an effort of retelling the story of one great woman in the bible with modern language and perhaps interpretation. If we make that stand before opening it's first page i believe we'll enjoy it even to the boring details (for me the details stand in the plus points of the book).

i have discussed it with several friends and many of them viewed it in the 'perception of the Book of Esther' so they said the interpretation is too loose, the book makes the...more

The actual story of Esther wasn't too bad, I mostly had a problem with the premise. This book in scroll form was written by Esther and his been unrolled and signed by every woman descended from her the night before her wedding. I'm guessing paper that's well over 2,000 years old is in pretty fragile shape. The Declaration of Independence is just over 200 years old and it has to be kept in a glass case with all the air sucked out of it. That scroll should be dust by now. And the women are suppose...more

I have the same problem with Biblical fiction that I do with historical fiction: I don't know whether to read through my fiction lenses or my non-fiction ones. I kept getting annoyed that I didn't have a complete history of world book handy to check the ideas in this book, say, of swastikas being that old a symbol in that particular context, etc. I also found the style a little hard to take; certain turns of phrase just didn't seem like the kinds of things Queen Esther would write.
That said, ...more

I started reading this book a few years back but couldn't get into it so I gave the book to my niece. But when the movie came out and I saw the movie. I had to read the book.

I ejoyed the book and learned many things about Esther or Hadassah. I am not sure you all will realize that some of the things were similar to Nazi Germany. For one Esther acted as a Christ like figure to her people and to us. Where she saves her people from certain death. She saved the line where Christ can come t...more

Esther is one of my very favorite Bible stories and has been ever since I was old enough to ask my grandmother to read it to me from her blue Bible story book. Through much of this book I did not like what Mr. Tenney was doing to our heroine, portraying her to be an emotionally defunct girl who was hardly allowed to leave the house. To have her suddenly enter the palace and immediately be told she had royal bearing was not believable. I also found it needlessly gory and descriptive of certain th...more

Ever since reading Francine River's Lineage of Grace series, I am really picky about biblical fiction. I felt like it was a lot of "work" to read this book. The author spent a lot of time on the historical backdrop, going back to King Saul and King Agag. But, the story didn't develop very well. And, there were a couple times that I scratched my head, like when King Saul thought "I have some raping to do". The way they "talked" didn't seem quite realistic to me. I...more

The story of Esther, Queen of Persia. I really enjoyed this book. Although Tenney is not a favorite author, he did a great job… This is a great book for women to read that are about to get married. An impartation takes place in regards to a woman PREPARING to selflessly give herself to her husband. Tenney stays on the “right side of the line” in propriety, while providing just enough information to tell the story accurately.

The story of Esther is my favorite in the Bible. I love her strength she exhibits amidst very real fear. And I love how God demonstrates his continual love and presence by being with her every step of the way. He honors her for her obedience in seeking Him.

Um, this book was OK. A lot of things were the same as the Bible but it has a lot of extra stuff that I think was unnecessary. It was a little too romantic for me.

But it WAS very well written and had a good plot.

This is an incredible book. Again you have to push yourself through some of the repetitive stuff but it is an amazing story and something that very well could have happened. The movie was awful.

This is a great story that elaborates on the book of Ester. Even though this is fiction i would like to think that maybe this is what happen in between the pieces of the story that i have always known.

Same as with The Red Tent; I love how this is a true story with a few embellishments.
It was written so well and everything came through easily.
Enjoyed the sequel, but not as much as this one.

Fished this a couple weeks ago and did not like it. I thought it was poorly written and drawn-out in too many places. I'd say skip it and read the story of Ester in the Old Testament.

This book really brings to life the biblical story of Esther, in a very fictional way, of course. An intriguing, fast read. I finished it within a matter of days.

An interesting exploration of the story of Esther from her point of view. I felt that the author really tried to capture the culture of the story.
