Highly recommended for tweens and teens, or anyone who likes Indiana Jones movies. "Fledgling, A Jason Steed Adventure" is a British action/adventure story featuring the multi-talented 11yo Jason Steed. It's a tale of friendship, loyalty, bravery, military duty, hardship, heroism, father love, and personal loss. Jason is a blond, blue-eyed super kid. A karate brown belt at age 5, he holds advanced belts in karate and jujitsu by age 11. Brought up in Hong Kong, he speaks Chinese among other langu...more

I wasn't sure what to make of this book when first begun because it's a "boy" book but I ended up really loving it anyway. Fledgling was fast-paced, intense, action-packed and oh so good! I think this book is perfect for middle graders, most especially boys, and those that don't read much. I think they'll love the action, excitement and the fearless main character, Jason Steed, just as I did.

I'm curious how an 11-year old boy can save his country without the benefit of magic.
The relationship Jason Steed has with his father is heart wrenching. My heart literally bleeds for him. The poor kid just wants his dad to love him. That's what really kept me hooked in the story. This story was almost like The Karate Kid in a way. A young boy training to fight.
This story would be perfect for a reluctant young male reader. There is enough action to keep them engaged throughout the entire novel.

How did I miss this one, this novel is nothing but brilliant, the character Jason Steed jumped out of the book, grabbed me by the throat and pinned me to the chair. Once I started I couldn't put it down. Then when I finished it I read a second time.
It goes clearly into my favorite books of all time, the novel is written in such a way that you think you are watching a movie. My nephew went ona nd on about how good this book was, he is not really the reading type. He read it and has now started to...more

This is a brilliant read! I felt a wide range of emotion while reading this action packed book. Mark does a such a great job at showing both Jason's life now in the present, and his life growing up, and it sets the tone for the resilient young man he really is. It also show cases the broken and then on the mend relationship he has with his father, Lieutenant Commander Steed of the HMS ARK Royal, based out of London, England.

Fledgling Jason Steed is Prince Williams favorite book, so I thoght if it's good enough for him it's good enough for me.
When I bought it I was surprised to see it's a young adult book for the 9-15 range. Prince William is 28 so whats the catch?
Nothing... The book is amazing, it's like no other book, Jason Steed is an great character, the author keeps the reader on the edge of his seat, it's like watching a movie you can picture everything.

I have to create a new shelf, "waste of trees." Seriously, this is easily the *worst* book I have tried to read in at least the last decade. By the time I made it to page 14, I had already clutched my head, groaned out loud, and rolled my eyes. Several times. Just jaw-droppingly horribly written. It's all stilted, the author doesn't use any contractions when people are talking, and it's all cliche and sappy. HORRIBLE. I do NOT understand all the raves and high reviews on here AT ALL. I actually...more
One of the best novels I have read. The story is original, fun, fast and emotional at times. The 'puppy dog' young love and humor came as a nice surprise, mostly because it's a boy's action book.
Jason grows on you and becomes real, the author paints a picture with words, the action takes the reader to another level.
My greatest part is when Jason is on the ship with the other Sea cadets, and they are given a training session on hand - hand combat by a bully drill instructor, I won't spoil the plo...more

1) Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
2) Genre: Young Adult
3) Synopsis: Jason Steed may be young but the fate of the world may rest on his shoulders. Can a teenager save the world from nuclear war?
4) Feelings: Starting out I didn't think I was going to like this book but the more I read the better I liked it. I am a fan of the "Alex Rider" series and this is similar to that. Maybe not quite as fantastical as the "Alex Rider" but still hard to believe.

Original story, fast, fun but above all very emotional. I really enjoyed this Jason Steed adventure and I am looking forward to reading the next Jason Steed book.
I was suprised how this book has stayed under the spot light until I read that Prince William has called it his favorite book.
The story is based around the 1970's, that brngs a littel mystery, no cell phones, and strange music. Jason is a very typical boy, who enjoys martial arts and carrot cake. The best part of the story is the back g...more

For a boys action book I was surprised how much I liked it. Jason Steed is a nice boy, hero and friend. Thats how I feel about him now, the author brings the character to life.
I don't think I have ever read a book that made me cry before, the story is not sad, far from it, it's funny in places, a little blood thirsty in others, action pacy in others, soft romance in some places, more like puppy love, but in 2 parts its has an emotional part between Jason and his father, the scene is very powerfu...more

An amazing novel, I enjoyed it so much I went out and found a copy of the first edition, I enjoyed that, it was longer and had a much better landing in the aircraft.
Quite a simple written book, I suggest it to boys in my class who hate to read, I teach at middle school. If any book is going to get them reading; Jason Steed is the choice.
The author packs in action, some laughs, some fear, tragedy and one scene packs so much emotion you will need the box of kleenex.

I read the reviews so bought the book, although it was not easy to get hold of. I eneded up getting it from Amazon.
The story is amazing, why this book is not a best seller is beyond me, probably because its self published.
I really loved the story, the character Jason Steed. The imagination is allowed to run wild, the story is cute, romantic, sad and exciting.
Its the best book I have read since Harry Potter. I cant say enough good things about it. In one word; Awesome.

Not many books make me cry but this Fledgling did, it wasn't really sad it was more the emotion you felt as Jason was struggling and his father gave over the radio pushed him to keep going, it took me two attempts to get through that chapter my eyes were are rivers.
The story was original, typical Alex Rider / Hunger Games / karate Kid book although more real life. My younger brother loved it as well, he is 13. I think it's really a boys book but I liked it.

I never read any books until my teacher recommended this for me, After the first page I was hoked n Jason Steed books and now I love spy books, Alex Rider, CHERUB, Artemus Fowl, Jason Steed comes top of the list. The story is very real life, the story grows on you. I would recommend for boy 10-14 if you are like me and don't like to read books this is a good start, my grades have gone up in English to.
Wow I wish I was 13 again, Jason Steed is the hottest spy kid, I enjoy the spy kid books, Jason has it all Blue eyes, good looks, blond hair with bangs that fall over his eyes and he is a black belt in various karate disciplines. On top of that he cry's twice i the book, I was like arrrrrr, so sweet. One part did make me cry the story is original its one of my favorite books ever.
I am clearly not the target audience for this- but I would say I'm a sucker for 10-12 year old boy protagonists. Not just Harry Potter either. Unfortunately I felt that this was a dumbed down version of Enders Game, based in a "real" life situation, taking place in the 1970's. No one over the age of twelve should bother with this one.
This was a great book with a child hero. I don't buy it when kids have "super powers" and save the world, but Jason Steed worked hard to become the kid he is. He is a neglected child who wants to please his Kung Fu Master and lives next to a Marine Base where he watches them train. Then he does a little night training when he can't sleep.

I had written a review for this book, but it seems to have disappeared.
I really liked this book. My edition is different to the one here, in that is was not an ebook.
This book is very fast paced, short on adjectives, full of verbs and action, great read for kids with a hankering for adventure, though there is some confronting violence and deaths.
I look forward toreading the next in the sereis, if it ever gets released.
