Vagabond Heart (Pearl Harbor #1)
Gay prostitute Tinder McCartney thought he had it made in WWII Honolulu . . . until true love and an attack on Pearl Harbor turned his life upside down.
Tinder McCartney is the only gay male prostitute working in Honolulu, HI during World War II. Like the 200 female prostitutes who live and work on Hotel Street, he services the armed forces drifting in and out of the island...more
Tinder is an amazing character. He deals with his life and the restrictive rules he lives under as a prostitute, with a lot of courage. His loneliness comes through loud and clear. I couldn't believe the restrictions placed on the pr...more

Although A.J. Llewellyn has over fifty novels out there, Vagabond Heart [Total E-Bound Publishing, 2010] is the first I have read. It certainly won’t be the last, however.
The plot is somewhat unique, inasmuch as it deals with a male prostitute as a romantic lead. Moreover, the story is set in 1942 Hawaii, just before the Pearl Harbour invasion—an era that is particularly nostalgic for me—and this is where AJ shines.
His bio states his pass...more
Vagabond Heart by AJ Llewellyn is a deeply moving and highly compelling novel that details life on the island of Oahu in the months preceding the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

Literary license is part & parcel of writing historical fiction. So a male whore working in Honolulu during WW II is an acceptable part of the story. So is Don Ho and the Duke knowing Tinder. The Don Ho interaction was cute, even if it did feel forced. My problem comes when the historical facts are...more
This story was especially fascinating for all its facts about life in Hawaii before the bombing of Pearl Harbor and its horrifying aftermath. Add in these two beautiful men in love with each other...more
I haven't always enjoyed this author's previous work but lately, I've had an excellent run so I'm chuffed. I always knew that if I didn't give up, I'd hit on something I'd like so that's why I tend to keep buying...more
Tinder has given up a career with an architectural firm in California to return to Hawaii upon his mother's death, only to find that he cannot find work. In desperation he works as the...more
Tinder is an incredible character. The way he painted his story, a male prostitute working during the time before Pearl Harbor was bombed, was so heartbreaking, the rules he had to live with, the uncertainty....the research this author did to portray Hawaii during wartime (curfew, rations, etc.) was so real, I felt like I was ther...more
I'm having trouble rating this book. I LOVE the premise...it has a bunch of my hot triggers. But the reality didn't quite measure up for me. First my e-book copy had some serious formatting problems that had me wondering and searching for missing parts of sentences. Second there were some serious historical inaccuracies that leapt out at me even though History is not my forte. Thirdly there...more
I loved the whole Hawaii setting, but Tinder as a prostitute wasn't believable. I don't get why he felt he had to do it nor how little he reflected on the fact that he was doing it. It just wasn't convincing. As a matter of fact, I didn't see the point of him working as a prostitute at all, he could just as well have worked in a factory or in a tattoo shop.
I liked the part where I got to learn a little bit more of Hawaiian history, and getting to revisit known places and hear known na...more
A.J’s passion for the islands led to writing a play about the last ruling monarch of Hawaii, Queen Lili’uokalani as well as a non-erotic novel about the overthrow of her kingdom written in dia...more
