"From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever.” -Chief Joseph

Chief Joseph was a peace chief, a great leader who truly believed his nation, the Nez Perce, could live in harmony with white people. Tragically, it was not to be. This fascinating biography separates fact from myth, and tells the compelling story of a man who tried to fight injustice with words, n

I won this book in the giveaway and I was definitely the winner. What a wonderful read . The story was captivating and kept my interest. It is so sad because, even though this happened back in the 1800-early 1900 nothing has really changed . I wonder after reading this book how much our society has actually learned about tolerence and embracing other cultures and their beliefs.
I found Chief Joseph an amazing and patient man, all he wanted was peace for his people and to go home to their land. H

I'm the author and you can read more about this book here: Chief Joseph: The Voice for Peace. I just received a wonderfully thick packet of fan mail from a fourth grade class (rising fifth graders now), some 60 well-written letters in pencil, on lined notebook paper.

Some excerpts:

"I like your book Chief Joseph. It has great history. It is a sad Story. I love the tricks they did on the horse. I like how Chief Joseph is a peaceful man." —Mary

"The white men were really, really rude to them!" —Olivi

Chief Joseph was an amazing man. He wanted peace for the Nez Perce and everyone else too. He believed that all people could live together in peace, even after all him and his tribe had went through. And I share his belief that all people could live in peace. I believe one day it will happen.

That being said, I've waited to read this book since it was released a few years ago. I recently found that my library had it and so I borrowed it. Chief Joseph's story is one everyone should know and it is g

This was an interesting introduction to the life of Chief Joseph. It definately did not take the U.S. Government's side, though I felt it was probably fair to those white men who did try to help the Nez Perce tribes get a fairer deal. It was mostly heartbreaking to hear how Chief Joseph tried time and again to argue for peace and reason, only to continually get broken promises. Worth reading for an overview of the plight of these native tribes around the time of the Civil War.
