I absolutely love this book!!!! This book never gets old and never stops being fun to read or hear. We LOVE this book!
For years Thea pretended to "pop!" from the egg. She still does sometimes. And this book is how she first learned that animals EAT other animals..
She knew birds caught worms. But it wasn't until I asked her what the baby bird was going to DO with the worm that I realized she didn't know. She said the worm was going to live in the nest with the baby bird. Like ...more

You can't say it's a bad book, not that anyone has yet to, but it's adorable! It's about a little baby bird that's been seperated from his mother, and asks around to random strangers if they're his mother. MORAL: Don't talk to strangers, after all, what if that dog on the cover he asked was a sexual predator? o.0 Okay, bad images... MOVING ON!

I loved this book as a kid and recently reread it because I bought it for our daughter. The only part I liked this time was when the baby bird fell out of the tree. It's a mystery what I saw in it as a kid, so I'm hoping when I can read it to my daughter she'll find it as fascinating as I once did and will be able to explain it to me. I really am curious to get some insight into the little kid mind, not that I've lost my little kid mind because I still love P. D. Eastman's Go Dog Go! which I've ...more

Definitely a highlight of my childhood bookshelf, this is probably one of the books that most got me to love reading (and, yes, I voted as such on the listopia site).

Another favorite here. We've read it many a time and it's a great book for my beginning readers.
It's a classic and everyone should read it.

I grew up with P. D. Eastman's books. As a student of Dr. Seuss and with his books being published under the Dr. Seuss brand, it's kind of hard to read one and not the other. I still have my ragged and beloved old copy of Eastman's The Cat in the Hat Beginner Dictionary. Still somehow, I missed Are You My Mother? when I was a child; Sean and I read it for the first time together just recently.

This may have been this first book that I ever read. It is a classic tale of travel and discovery. I think Kerouac totally ripped this off when he wrote On the Road, or vice versa. I remember the existentialist dread I felt as a five year old contemplating the utter futility and pathos of having to go around and ask of total strangers, “Are you my mother?” It’s been so long since I read it that the details escape me, but I think his mother was a crack whore or something. God, no...more

Perhaps it's the dog on the cover?
and the cute little bird?
But this is my first favorite book. Now that I am older, with a slightly above average psychology background, I think my mom might have gotten worried as I repeatedly read this book. For, for on a Freudian, sub-conscious level, it implies that I do not know who my mother is, and I am still searching. But, I guess my mom then found relief when, in the ending,

"Are You My Mother?" was a nightly read for me when I was very little. I'm sure my parents were probably sick of reading it by the time I reached mid elementary school. Because of its easy read it is a great start to getting kids to read. It also mentions family dynamics. For a pre-school or kindergarten classroom I would encourage the children to act out the story and build on it. This book would be great to allow parents to check out and read with their children, especially for ...more

A truly delightful book about a newly hatched baby bird who can't find his mother. Not knowing what she looks like, he sets out on a journey of discovery while looking his mother.
This was my favorite as a child. So, naturally, when I had children, it became one of their favorites as well. My children always delighted in shouting "SNORT" at the right moment. For years my son wanted to be a "Snort Driver" when he grew up.

Although my mom has a cassette tape of me reciting "The Little Red Hen" when I was 2 years old - proof that I read, or was read to, so much I committed the story to memory, this book is the first one I actually recall reading, and having a favorite book. My mother also instilled the mantra "books are your friends" to us at a young age, and we never forgot. Reading has been a big part of my life ever since :)

Georgia read this book three times. Georgia thinks it is kinda scary and there is a lot of action in this book. There is a lot of repeating words like up, up, up. The title is kinda weird because the baby bird doesn't even know his mother. Georgia learned that when birds are babies they don't know how to fly. (This was told to me by my daughter and these are her exact words)

My child likes this book. It's about a bird on his quest to find his mother. My child like to pretend she is searching for her mother. I enjoyed up to the point where the "snort" puts the baby bird back in her nest! Whats a snort? Can't we just use the right word? Or is this about using your imagination. Besides that it is a fun little book.

This was my favorite book as a child. I remember begging my parents to read it to me. My father would say, "But you have it memorized already!" and I would proclaim I didn't so he would read it to me. As he did I would catch myself saying the words with him and stop myself to prove I didn't have it memorized so he would continue to read.

Little bird hatches while mom is out getting food. Little bird goes in search of mom, asking everyone he encounters "are you my mother". Best of all is that it's an earthmover that he is convinced is his mother (Stig of course liked that there was a truck in this book) and the truck gets the bird back to it's nest and mother.

I remember checking this book out from the school library - and then getting in trouble for losing the book and having to pay the fine. It has always been one of my favorite little people books, but I had forgotten about it until I saw it at the doctor's office recently. My wife bought it for me and little Spence.

Anyone!
How can you truly rate one of these books bad? They've got ten pages! What are you supposed to say? "I really didn't like the characters. They were really shallow. They had no depth" of "The climax was completely predictable!" What are you supposed to say? You have no choice but to rate this book four or five stars!!
