What a fun book by Emily Gravett, the author/illustrator of Meerkat Mail! Little Mouse has taken over Emily's Big Book of Fears, a journal style book with space to draw illustration of the fears described, and added his own. With "nibbled" pages, gnawed pencil, and mixed media illustrations, this is a fascinating look at fears from the perspective of a mouse. It has several Mother Goose inferences and a clever ending. Younger kids can relate to being scared. Olde...more

Little Mouse has found a big book that explains phobias one-by-one. On each page, he has space to document his own personal fears that fit under that phobia. The book starts with arachnophobia and ends, wonderfully, with musophobia (the fear of mice.) Throughout the book, there are cutouts in the pages, chewed on edges, and flaps to lift, that bring this story even more fully to life.

I wish I could think of a good name for books in which the book itself is an object, or the action leaves the page (I can think of Wiesner's Three Little Pigs, but I know there are more). This is one such book. Little Mouse has re-appropriated this Book of Fears and each page shows just how scary Fear of Bathing, Fear of Being Eaten, and more are for a mouse. Further pondering may lead you to realize how many "mouse scenarios" from nursery rhymes have been referenced! The mixed-media i...more

Their description:
This is a clever, funny and innovative book which is also extremely warm and emotionally engaging for the reader. It’s a book you can explore and spend ages over. The attention to detail is quite astonishing: every part of the book is used, and the production values are fantastic. It works on every single level. A publishing tour de force. (Age range: 6+)

I'm not sure what to say about this one...it was recommended by a librarian friend of mine who LOVED it but I was a little surprised when I read it. I don't think I would read it to any of my kids because the subject matter is a little intense and the illustrations are very vivid. It is all about a little mouse learning to face all of his fears (they are real fears with the proper names of the fears and what they are listed on the top corner of each page). I just thought it was really strange an...more

Embellished pages with 3-D elements (although not a pop-up book), this picture book lists all sorts of fears, with space for kids to draw in their own stuff too. I liked it although it seemed pretty sophisticated for really young kids. I'd be interested to see how this plays with different age groups.

I would recommend this book to older kids who are are scared of many things or just some things. It could open up discussion between them and an adult. I like that there is a space below to record your fears on each page.(not so good for the library)

Little Mouse takes over Emily's journal as she describes her fears, correct terminology and all, with mouselike panache.
Illustrations include mouse eaten edges, flaps and more
as Mouse rewrites in journal format. Kids will pour over.

Little Mouse is scared of a lot of things. Seriously, a lot. But there is someone who is scared of Little Mouse!
The awesome part of this book is the mouse-chewed pages, the newspaperlike articles, and the general feel of the book.

A very cool book with a unique and beautiful design. Lots of unique pages, layouts and pieces that look chewed by a mouse. Fun definitions of various fears/phobias too. A great bibliotherapy session for children with fears.

I usually adore Emily Gravett - but to me this was a pretty odd picture book. What with the freaky pictures and the mouse poop...I would have a hard time recommending this to a youngster.

This book was just absolutely hilarious for me. For fans of her Wolves book, it's going to look a bit similar in style. But, it's very good. A definite holiday pick for me.

I love the clever collage illustrations...more than my kids. Although they enjoy what all the different phobias are named.

What a fun book! It works well with Jamie Lee Curtis' Big Words for Little People.
