This just squeaked by with 4 stars: it is a definite improvement over the first book, as the plot really starts moving, and the laughs were a lot more frequent. I almost didn't pick it up since the first one was just average, but I'm glad I read it. The cow race cinched the fourth star! And the quiche jokes. Yes! The only thing that bothered me was that now that we are meeting the whole town, it's all white folks, except a sudden (tongue-in-cheek) cameo. (I checked, and yes Aladdin came out the...more

The bones are wierd looking people with big noses and are pale white. They are from boneville.
rat creatures are after them.

In the beginning they are at a fair. Fone Bone and Thorn get into a little fight about Fone picken a fight with a honey seller. so he goes off to find his own honey. he gets stung by a huge bee. but gets the honey. while his cousin, Phoney Bone, is working bad ideas to get some money. of course his plans turn out horrible, and everyone realizes he is a fake and they drive a...more

This is the second one out of the 9 bone series. This first takes place with fone bone and thorn at the Spring Fair. Then it turns to the two other brothers, Phonicble bone and smiley bone working at the tavern. They are organizing a scheme for the BIG COW RACE. Grandma Ben, thorns grandma is competing, as a cow! she wins every year They are trying to make everyone bet on the "mystery cow" that smiley bone is going to disguise himself in. They run into company in the race and all plans are ruine...more
I think this book is really funny and entertaining.Bone has nice and funny friends who are their to help him and then, he is always helping his cousins, Phoney Bone who is the selfish cousin, and of course, he helps Fone Bone also, the Bone with no brain that helps Phoney Bone in his scam about setting bets and telling people lies about the mystery cow and Gran'ma Ben, in the 2nd book of Bone's adventures.
Bone's cousins are washing the dishes at the bar, paying through their beers. Bone is wit...more
This is the second Bone graphic novel out of nine. This was a great addition to the story and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Fone Bone and his buddies are getting ready for the Great Cow Race. Grandma is hoping to win, but Phoney Bone is creating some money mischief in the betting pool that is bound to get the Bones in trouble again. In addition to this the broader more mysterious storyline is also added to: Thorne is having strange dreams that she confesses to Fone Bone and Fone Bone is again attacked...more
[Note: Spoilers ahead!]

By skimming and skipping (and re-skimming and re-skipping) around the complete Bone one-volume compilation, I think I've basically read the entire thing. I actually made sure to read "The Great Cow Race" from start to finish, though, so I'll give a comprehensive review here. After American Born Chinese, Bone is really the first graphic novel that I've read all the way through, and I have to admit that the genre is growing on me. "The Great Cow Race" was the volume I'd skip...more

The Great Cow Race
When the Bone cousins (Fone Bone, Phoney Bone, and Smiley) get run out of town, they found their way to the village of Barrellhaven. In this sequel, they plan to go back home to Boneville until Phoney Bone decides to risk everything on another one of his schemes. He thinks of a way to get rich with the annual cow race. His plans don’t go like he planned (as usual). They get chased by Rat Creatures, and Phoney Bone is now also hated by the village of Barrellhaven.

I thin...more
This picks up where the first volume left off, right before the Great Cow Race where Phoney and Smiley Bone are planning to make some cash through some not so honest means and Fone Bone is still trying to win the heart of Thorn but not with the greatest success. Once again the story and artwork are superb and the character and story development are perfect (but I'll be honest I would've liked more of the Dragon but I'm hoping he'll be cropping up plenty in the next few volumes so I wont hold it...more

The cornerstone of GRAPHIX, our new graphic novel imprint, BONE is the incredible comic book saga of an unlikely hero who must save an idyllic valley from the forces of evil.

In THE GREAT COW RACE, volume 2 of this 9-book epic, Fone Bone and his cousins plan to return home after visiting the village of Barrelhaven with Thorn and Gran'ma Ben. But Phoney risks everything on one last get-rich-quick scheme for the town's annual Great Cow Race. As usual, Phoney's plans go disastrously awry, and Bonevi...more
Lovin' the series so far. The thing I'm really digging about Bone is that it continues from one issue to the next with really no breaks whatsoever. This is one long, continuous far. Bone: The Great Cow Race (Volume 2) collects issues 7-12.

Not much else to say as I'm not going to break down each and every issue since it all ties into one giant story. So, you're just gonna have to read it for yourself. One thing that I will mention is the reaction of Phoney Bone when he discovers that L...more
Bone – the great cow race is full of humor and adventure. In this 2nd part, Phony Bone gets an idea to get money. He spreads rumor that The Mystery cow is going to defeat GrnadMa Ben in The Great Cow Race. But as usual his plan goes wrong and they have to escape.

I really like Jeff Smith’s way of telling the story and the Jeff’s drawings are full of life and enjoyable

The most enjoyable parts are

Fone Bone’s love for Thorn
Scenes between Blue and Brown Rat Creatures. Particularly Brown’s obsession w...more
* I can only gush when I talk about this charming graphic novel series. I am so in love with Fone Bone and his sheer innocence. His heart is filled with love for Thorn and there are some amusing moments when they're at the town festival and a sweet talker tries to take Thorn away from him. If you are looking for a book to get your reluctant reader to read, I would ABSOLUTELY tell you to grab this series. The best part is that you, an adult, will enjoy this just as much as your child!!! I'm so ha...more

I really wish that I hadn't read Rose, because it tells everything that the "Bone" series is showing. Of course, I had no idea that they were in any way related when I picked up the book - I hadn't read any "Bone" at the time, didn't know the author, and nothing on the "Rose" book indicated it was related to "Bone." Still, I'm enjoying the "Bone" series even with that extensive spoiler.

"Bone" is funny, as well as being an interesting fantasy story, with slapstick, sarcasm and irony in enjoyable...more

Phoney Bone is working off his debts at the local tavern when he hears about the Great Cow Race. The race is held every year with the fastest cows around and also Gran'ma Ben, who usually wins the race. Phoney starts a rumor that Gran'ma is too old to win and the Mystery Cow is really the favorite. Then he takes bets against Gran'ma and in favor of the Mystery Cow (really just Smiley Bone in disguise--supposedly a sure way to make the Mystery Cow lose). Like the get-rich-quick schemes of his for...more

I am reading Bone The Great Cow Race by Jeff Smith. In BONE The Great Cow Race Fone Bone gets suspicious about what Foney Bone and Smiley Bone have a plan to become rich and then the towns people would run them out of the valley. i think that this is a good book to people who like Graphic Novels or Comedy.

This book is pretty funny. I find it amusing when Smiley bone messes around and dresses like a cow. It had a lot of action and adventure which
kept me interested. During the Great cow race Smiley gets caught and gets trampled by Rat Creatures.
hahaha Bone is just so damn enjoyable.

Did you ever bet on a trick that later you noticed it didn't work out as planned? If so this book possibly can have the similar happenings when things started going wrong. This is a really great book but other bone books are great also. Bone "Old Man's Cave" is i believed the 7th book around either way those two book are great to read i would read the whole volume but we don't have them.I would recommend this book from any age boy or girl this is book volume i liked alt.In this book Phoney bone (...more

This is the second book in the Bone series by Jeff Smith. We all read it independently and I'm so glad that our girls like the story. The story is fun, exciting, and full of drama and intrigue. We are all hooked!

My husband enjoyed collecting comic books when we were a lot younger and when I would accompany him on his trips to the comic book store, I would often pick up an issue of Bone. I thought the story was very engaging and dramatic and I loved the little guy.

Now that our girls are older and...more

I really liked this second volume as well. Gran'ma Ben is still badass, and we get more plot development that flows well and starts to build on the characters we're getting to know. The whole 'romance' between Fone Bone and Thorn is fairly whack because how many times are we seriously gonna read about underdog men romancing women, it is the most played out thing EVER. But, it doesn't smother the story line and is balanced with everything else, which says something. The whole mystery cow thing is...more

Bone 2 The great cow race continues imidiatly from bone one. Fone Bone and his two brothers Simily bone and phony bone are still in the vally. Hearing about the great cow race that thorns grandmother is participating in Fone bones two cousins come up with a way to steal all the townspeoples mony my telling them to bet on the Mistery Cow. (Of course there really isnt a real mistery cow it's just them dressed up in a cow costume. All the townspeople fall for the trick exept for the trick exept fo...more

The second book in the Bone series is centered on the Great Cow Race, which should come as no surprise since the book is subtitled The Great Cow Race. It’s an annual event the town holds where everyone brings out their best cow to compete. People even bet on the races, so there is quite a bit at stake for everyone. One thing of note is that Grandma Ben is the only human to take place in the race, and is generally the winner. Phoney Bone sees this as a great opportunity to make some money, or so...more

If the first volume, Bone, Vol. 1: Out from Boneville got me immersed in this fantastic world, volume 2 make fall in love for this wonderful comic. I think I'm giving it 4 out of 5 instead of 5/5 (which I gave to vol. 1) because some of the novelty was lost a bit — I, of course, new what to expect of the art and the narrative.

It doesn't diminishes the quality of what Jeff Smith did, nonetheless. Actually, it kinda enhances it, because he allows the reader to be more "into" the valley and the lif...more

The book Bone:The Great Cow Race grabbed my attention because of how the cover had cows and monsters. At the same time there was two guys running away from the, but one in a cow suit. Since the book had the title The Great Cow Race i knew that it had to do something with a rcae and cows. Which made it funny because you dont really hear or see any cow races.

This book is about a race in which cows race against each other but theres a champion who is an old lady. People love her because she hasnt...more

The second book in the Bone series focuses on the Spring Fair. The three Bone cousins, now reunited, have different agendas. Lovable Fone Bone just wants to spend time with Thorn, the human girl he has a crush on, while Phoney Bone has a cooked up a gambling scheme. With Grandma Rose set to enter and win the Cow Race, Phoney spreads word that there is a mystery cow that is expected to win the race this year. The cow is really Smiley Bone in disguise, but the people don't know that, and as they l...more
Smith,Jeff.(2005). Bone The Great Cow Race. New York:Scholastic.(132pp.).

Amazing what scamming people will do to you, one thing it will do is get you chased by a mob who wants to kill you. Jeff Smith did a great job on Bone The Great Cow Race. I absolutely loved the part when all three of the bone cousins where being chased by cows and rat creatures.

I would have to say that the two main main characters are Thorn and Phonny bone, Thorn is a village woman living in a small village in the norther...more
"The Great Cow Race", for those that have missed the number two on the spine, is actually the second compiled book of Smith's adventures with his loveable, yet strangely built, main character Fone Bone. As this is the second book, I was unfamiliar with the origins of the "Bone" characters, but fell instantly enthralled with their lifestyle and storyline. What makes this second chapter enjoyable is the level of magic, evil, and "paths of fate" that obviously lay before our characters. There is my...more
