People I love think this is a friggin masterpiece, and I love them less for it now.
I picked up the first volume of Bone because I'd heard it had such amazing comic timing, a great storyline and relatively solid artwork. No one mentioned that the dialogue reads as though it were written by a fifth grader, the humor is predictable and the story is so threadbare and uninteresting I began making up my own story for the panels. And to say that the artwork is well done is like saying the dreamcatc...more

Bone is a graphic novel about three ‘bones’. Bones are fictional beings that interact with, talk like, and live like humans. The three bones, Fone Bone, Phoney Bone, and Smiley Bone, start off the book in a desert-like area where we find out that Phoney got kicked out from Boneville, their hometown.
All three Bones fall into a valley and get lost. Fone Bone, the main character, is lost all by himself. He is stuck in the wilderness alone. While Fone Bone is looking for his cousins, he fi...more

Bone
Bone is a graphic novel about these living bones that got kicked out of their city. As they try to find their way back they all end up getting split up now since all of them are separated, none of them know how to get back home because they don’t function very well when they are separated. The book focuses on one of the characters through most of the story. He got trapped in a forest because when winter comes you can not leave the forest until it is gone. I read Bone way back in the early 90s when it was serialized in comic book form, before these gorgeous collections by Scholastic. I recently revisited these and found them to have aged incredibly well. Like the best narratives for young audiences, the adventures of the three cousins Fone Bone, Smiley Bone, and Phoney Bone resonate with adults as well. The only other analogue that comes to mind is some of the work by Pixar. Jeff Smith has created a timeless series that I hope to read to my childr...more

Bone didn't make it onto my radar until a coworker recommended it for my TinTin-obsessed eight-year-old cousin. realizing that I, too, am TinTin-obsessed, I decided to give it a shot.
And, wow. Bone has the adventure of TinTin and the impeccable comic timing and sensibility of Walt Kelly's Pogo; in short, it's the funniest, most exciting, smartest comic book you've never heard of.
Let me put it another way. Regardless of whether or not you read comic books at all, if you have a pulse and you c...more

Wow. Bone is just as great now as I remember. What I'd forgotten, though, is just how quickly the story gets underway. In my mind, the first three or four volumes were establishing the world and the relationships, with a little drama of the rat creatures, cow races, and all that. But no--the story moves, from the instant it starts.
Not worth reviewing each individual volume, because they'll all say the same thing: WOW. This is a fantastic series.

Rereading earlier Bone volumes since No. 7 came out in color recently. Out from Boneville is a great intro to the series, balancing the comic Bones and stupid, stupid rat creatures with the more ominous locust swarm and the Hooded One. There are all kinds of great details, like Rose's expressionless face-off with the dragon to the shower of petals that falls when Bone and Thorn take a bath in the lake.

Bought this on a whim and loved it! Hilarious, fun, interesting, cleanly executed art, plus I have a crush on Thorn. This is the sort of thing I always wanted to write and illustrate myself, but haven't had time or discipline for. I've thought Bone looked interesting for years, but only got around to picking it up now, and I've really enjoyed it. Even those of you not into graphic novels might like it!

Bone is a lost little soul finding himself caught up in an age old struggle of mythic proportions. This first volume is the set up and introduction of truly memorable characters. I would never trade my copy or let anyone get their grubby hands on it. It's signed by Jeff Smith hisself. I don't care how many eggs you offer me.

I like it because I think the Red Dragon is kind of funny because the rat creatures just scream and run away every time they see him. When Fone Bone asked, "What's the matter, can't you breathe fire?" his head was singed by the flames that the Red Dragon breathed.

You don't have to like comics to like this series! If you like humor, if you like fantasy, if you like adventure, if you like surprising plot twists, you should read it. I can't say the Bone series is like anything else, because it's not. Just read it!

This great comic combines humor and adventure beautifully. In much the same way, cartoonish and realistic art are combined in a manner that seems like it should be distracting, but instead works very well. I can't wait to read more Bone.

This book is one of the best of the graphic novels. Unlike Calvin and Hobbes, (which is also great) the Bone series is told by a story line, which I like better than just random comics.

Bone is good fun. I love the Rat Creatures - I think they're interesting looking and their dialog cracks me up. I've no explanation for why they call each other comrade though...

First read this more than a decade ago, somehow never followed it up. Now I'm re-discovering it and sharing it with my daughter - very nice mix of fun and adventure.

First chapter of BONE was whimsical and fantastic. Great characters, great dynamics between them, and the art is fascinating. Very Walt Kelly. Very well-executed.

Bone is light and fun, with a few dark undertones. The artwork is great, with different characters drawn in fairly diverse ways. Overall, it's a quick, enjoyable read.
