Twenty years before Batman started patrolling Gotham City at night, Señor Zorro, the "Curse of Capistrano" was protecting California. He first appeared in the serial The Curse of Capistrano by John McCulley in 1919. A year later he burst onto the silver screen, brought to life by Douglas Fairbanks. If you ever have a chance to see the film with live music, do it!

After the success of the film the book was republished in 1924 with the title of the film, The Mark of Zorro. The book c...more

I selected this work because I was interested in the perspective of an early 20th century American of California in the Mexican period. As a California history teacher I was interested in integrating it into my course as the subject of a paper on the romantization of Old California. Also - I will confess - I am a big Zorro fan, particularly the old black and white Disney version. I was very interested in reading the origninal work.

After reading the book, I decided that it was not a great cho...more

I really enjoyed it. It's kinda pulpy in a way, but it was written in the early 1900s and action novels of that time often feel pulpy. Except Stevenson (yes, yes, he was writing in the 1800s, but it's close enough). Good swashbuckling action. Idiot villians. Cunning heroes. And of course, the dual identity. Really good so far!

Okay, I finished it, and -- SPOILER! -- I really liked his double identity as Don Diego Vega, a caberello, and Senor Zorro, a highwayman and thief. Really different from the movie, though.

While not very deep, this original novel of the masked avenger, originally published in the 1920's, is a must read for lovers of either the character or good old action-packed adventure stories.

Fun, though not as good in terms of dialogue/witticisms as the Scarlet Pimpernel. It was also painfully obvious as to who Zorro's true identity was, but still, cute fun overall.

I remember reading this in my youth and being fascinated with Zorro. Even then I loved how the 'little guy' was being protected.
