Seventeen-year-old Bianca Piper is cynical and loyal, and she doesn’t think she’s the prettiest of her friends by a long shot. She’s also way too smart to fall for the charms of man-slut and slimy school hottie Wesley Rush. In fact, Bianca hates him. And when he nicknames her “Duffy,” she throws her Coke in his face.

But things aren’t so great at home right now. Desperate f

I understand that movies aren't always exactly like the book, but changing the plot line has gone too far. And where did Bella thorne come from, she seems to have a huge part in the movie, but in the book, her character has a small role. The movie is gonna be a typical teen film, with blocked kissing scenes, and an over exaggeration of high school issues.
^ ranting about all of that though.. I hope that the movie isn't like the trailer, and that they discuss the insecurities that Bianca went through, because thats what drew me to the book, I could relate with her character.(less)

I started to read this book at about 10PM, thinking I would just get through a chapter and come back to it later, but that didn't happen. I stayed up until 2AM. What first sucked me in was Bianca's voice, which I found funny and engaging. But what really kept me going was my sudden and inexplicable love for Wesley. This book is well-paced and well-written, but its greatest strength lies in its characters. They are interesting, likable (even when they're doing things I don't approve of!), and the ...more

They're making this book into a movie. So, naturally, I had to read it.

The word that first comes to mind when thinking back over this book is messy. That's how I would describe it. It's entertaining in parts, annoying in others, and sends out a confusing mix of messages.

“I actually need your help. You see, your friends are hot. And you, darling, are the Duff.”
“Is that even a word?”
“Designated. Ugly. Fat. Friend,” he clarified. “No offense, but that would be you.”

A note to anyone who chooses to read the following: I am critiquing this book solely based on the first 80 pages or so as I simply didn't have the will to continue any further.

There are some spoilers, but only for the first 80 pages.

Have you ever been sitting with a group of friends and one of them tells a joke and immediately everyone but you starts laughing? And then you sit there looking like the stupefied idiot who's just not getting it? That's how I felt while reading The DUFF. So many of m

I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this book. Initially, I picked it up because I saw a preview for the film. After reading it, I’m not sure if I’ll go watch the movie. With the way the few clips I’ve seen show, it’s not much like the book at all. And some of the things I really loved about the book seem to be missing from the film… but back to the book! The Duff is a laugh out loud, sweet, sexy, and at times serious read. It’s a book about friendship, loyalty, and even

Anyway, Gahd, I love love luuurve this book. I had this on my TBR pile for quite a long time but I keep on passing through it. Seriously, I should have read this a long time ago. But yeah, I guess it's better late than never, right? And I am really glad that I finally read this! This is just so freaking awesome. I'm surprise on how much I enjoyed this book.

I think one of the worst things that could ever happen to a book is an unsympathetic protagonist. A person would be willing to forgive a lot of things — loopholes in the plot, slow-moving story, clichéd endings — if they fell in love with the hero/heroine. Unfortunately, this did not happen to me with The DUFF.

I read a blog post by Kody Keplinger today where she remarked that a lot of the people who criticised The DUFF did so because of the sex scenes in the book. Personally, I have no objection

So here’s the thing, I’m conflicted with the themes, but damn, this book was entertaining.

Quick synopsis: Girl uses boy as a sex toy in order to escape the hard realities of her life. Boy is totally cool with it because he is already deemed a man-whore within the first few pages. Somehow they end up falling for each other.

Problems?
Bianca is a bitch--I love her.
Bianca is a bitch--I hate her.
Wesley is a whore--I hate him.

Alright ladies, I've got a question: say you're at a scummy dance club that your friends all but forced you to go to. You're not having a good time. In fact, you're pretty miserable and can't wait to go home. As you sit at the bar nursing your Cherry Coke a good-looking guy comes and sits next to you.

That would be nice, right? A good way to pass the time until your friends decide they've had all the man-handling they can take (for the night).

Well, say the hot guy in question turns out to be th

A cute, fun read. I really enjoyed this story. What is a Duff? Hell, many of us notice them all the time. The one girl/guy who is a bit less attractive in their crowd, the one that tends to fade into the background. Well, when known manwhore, Wesley informs Bianca that she is in fact the Duff of her group, she is left spinning.

OMIGOSH YOU GUYS! I loved this book!! Like seriously, I kind of can't believe how much I loved a book that literally means "ugly fat friend".

Over the years I've seen this book in passing, in the library, bookstores, and lists titled "Best Book Boyfriends". I never picked it up because come on. Look at the title. Now look at the cover. Based on those two things, would you

This book. WOW. Another soul-mate book. I decided to read it because of the movie trailer,BUT its NOTHING like the trailer. This book is deep and thought provoking.

Bianca, the DUFF, is not your regular 'misfit' or protagonist. She's cynic, smart, protective, loving. And her friends though they are pretty, are not dumb blondes as the trailer suggests. They are pretty amazing people. Casey and Jessica are two brilliant friends. Wesley is NOT how he's presented in the trailer either. In book,he has d

My Favourite Quote: "No matter where you go or what you do to distract yourself, reality catches up with you eventually".

I have never heard of the term The Duff (The Designated Ugly Fat Friend) before I bought this book. I thought maybe it was just a term used in the States. But apparently not. It is even used here in Australia. As I was paying for the book at the counter, the owner of the bookstore said 'we used t

I am all about the DUFF! Loved it!
I was interested in this books years ago, when it first came out, but then I read some reviews that said it was full of inappropriate sex, and promoted low self-esteem in girls.
Unfortunately, I let that scare me off.
I recently noticed that they were making a Movie about the book, and my interest perked up again.

This book really struck a chord with me.
Now I'm not going to give you some sob story, and tell you that I felt like a DUFF in high school. Because, the

I looked at him, into his warm gray eyes, and suddenly understood what he was trying to tell me. The message hidden beneath the words.
You're not alone.

I am totally in shock by how much I loved this book. I'm not going to lie, I really thought that this would end up not being my cuppa but I was so wrong. This book had me hooked from the beginning.

The Duff brings back memories from two years ago. I was just beginning to get into serious writing. My characters were cynical as hell. They all needed to prove something to the world by being as snarky and sarcastic as they possibly could. I didn't know that certain phrases were grammatically incorrect such as,

"I'm tired,"John sighed.

or

"I hate him,"Lissa hissed.

And I was very annoying with my character descriptions. Yes, I described the color of my main character's eyes. Then I had her describe

They believed he was a good guy they could tame, but I knew he was a jackass. I only wanted his body.

Go on and get that, girl.

1. At least she KNEW what she was getting herself into.
2. And she owned it without shame.
3. AND she had no expectations that she was going to get more.

In a weird way, Bianca's knowledge of her being the DUFF was this back door into empowerment. In a weird way, I almost expected more insecurity over it. I guess I should be happy that she wasn't the stereotypical needy

This was such a nice book!

It was a fun read since the very begining. I loved the brief discusion between Bianca and Wesley, it was fun and entertaining. Also I loved the way both characters changed (so slowly) through the story - they started by hating each other (or at least Bianca says she did), then they found out that there is more to them than meets the eyes, and they ended so deeply in love - but the transition seemed as natural as breathing.

Bianca is the average girl with not-so-high se

I had my eye on this book for a while, and after reading another fellow reviewer's review, and seeing how much she enjoy The Duff, I went over to Amazon, browsed through the sample pages and couldn't stop reading! One click and the book was mine!

There was a lot of hype with this one and since I don't do too well with over-hyped contemporary books, I pushed it back as much as I could. Until I realized that the movie is coming out soon. Why did I wait so long? I bloody loved it. It's cute and adorable and everything I would love in a contemporary book. I didn't even mind there wasn't a huge story-line or story to keep going because I was enjoying the characters so much. Also don't judge this book by the cover, because even though there's ...more

This one took me by surprise. But I guess I should've expected to enjoy it. Bianca is abrasive, snippy, and let's be honest, kind of a beotch. I can totally emphathize with Bianca. We'd be friends, for sure. I think every girl has felt like the DUFF at some point in her life before. Insecurity is a part of growing up (and even after that.) Seriously though, you guys. I'd never heard of a DUFF before, but I'd be heinous, too, if a guy ever addressed me by that term!

I started reading this book all because of the trailer for the movie, it seemed cute and I wanted to read the story. I read it in one sitting, it's a quick read.

So I borrowed the book and read it! Needless to say it's probably going to be nothing like the book but more like the 90's movie She's All Thatbecause this book, was although cute, NOT something I would recommend to young adults.

When I was 18, my parents encouraged me to write a book. I laughed at the idea and said, "But I haven't lived long enough to understand people. That would be a bad book." I think they had this impression that because I had gone to summer camps for writing, my creative efforts up until this point would have consisted of pithier things than two pages of handwritten story about a rabbit couple, erotica about video game characters (written so young that the sex parts probably consisted of "then sex ...more

LOL. I was actually on a reading hiatus but I don't know why I pick up a book to read. Maybe I needed a stress reliever? If that's the reason, then I definitely found it.

The Duff was not a perfect read. It has so many flaws as far as I'm concerned BUT I can't deny how this book entertained the hell out of me.

Update:

Simply put: I loved this. One reason might be that I’m the biggest sucker on earth for stories like this. Bad boy falls for good/ordinary/average girl. Give me a main character I can relate to, a plot that keeps me entertained and doesn’t strike me as stupid or ridiculous, make the bad boy swoon-worthy and top it off with some hot and sizzling scenes that make my pul

"El tono de tu voz hace que queria estrangularme." I stood up and waited for him to hand over my papers.
"That sounds sexy," he said, getting to his feet and handing me the stack of Spanish work he'd swept together. "What's it mean?"
"The sound of your voice makes me want to strangle myself."
