From the moment I began reading the first book in Anne Bishop's Black Jewel Series I was captivated, moved, and entralled with the story and the characters. Having fallen in love with the dark jewel trilogy I was expecting a lot from this book. AND I got it... The book consists of 4 stories. Usually I am not a big fan of short stories, but "The Prince of Ebon Rih" and "Kaeleer's Heart" are long enough, and detailed enough to be really satisfying. I really liked the way the story of Lucivar and M...more

I have never read a book in The Black Jewels series. I've tried and everytime I open that first book I get irritated. The style doesn't work for me, the characters seem ugh, and yet. I adore this book.

I really do. It makes no sense but there you have it. My least favourite is the opening story. I get that that might be because I haven't read the series but it was a bit confusing and while I appreciate the way she wrote it from a different POV, and we were as confused as the spider at first, it...more

This book contains 4 short stories set in the world of Anne Bishop's Black Jewels Trilogy and should only be read by those who have read at least the first 3 books. You don't need to read the 4th book as it has nothing to do with the events in this book. **Warning** If you haven't read the first 3 books there could be possible SPOILERS in this review.

The first story in Dreams Made Flesh is called "Weaver of Dreams" and my interpretaion is its about how the dream weaver spiders came to be. Out o...more

The short stories in this book are best read only if you read the original Black Jewels Trilogy as they fill in some of the blanks. I must say these stories are a lot less gritty and dark than the trilogy (except for one), but I found three of them a joy to read and was happy to find out more about some of the things that were only hinted at in the trilogy. Bishop's writing is excellent and rich as always.

Here's an overview of the stories:

This is definitely not the book I'd start with if you're new to Anne Bishop or her Dark Jewels series, but if you're a fan of the trilogy that starts with Daughter of the Blood, I'd definitely recommend this book. I've heard this book compared to fan fiction, not in a disparaging sense, but because of its function in filling some notable gaps in the trilogy you might be curious about, bits of backstory.

It's a meaty book with two out of the four stories novel-length: "The Prince of Ebon Rih" and...more

First of all, I should state that I NEVER read trashy romance novels. And I'd say this qualifies as a romance novel. I read a lot of Luna fantasy novels which typically have a romance element, but Anne Bishop's books in my mind qualify as belonging to the trashy romance genre. So why did I give it 4 stars? Because I really enjoyed it! I picked up The Shadow Queen (Black Jewels #7) at the library on a whim, and next thing I knew I was back looking for more. Maybe it says something sad about my ow...more

The first story was a little confusing and unclear. In fact, I thought it was just a prologue or something at first and not the actual story. The second story about Lucivar and Marian was my favorite. I had been disappointed, reading the trilogy, to not see how they met and ended up together so this story definitely filled that hole. And filled it quite well! The third story really made clear just how powerful Saetan could be and what he could be capable of. *shiver* And the fourth story continu...more

I really enjoyed this collection of stories that accompany the Black Jewels Trilogy. (I skipped the 4th book as it did not involve the characters from the first 3.)

I love, love, love these characters, but I was a little disappointed in the story line. I just felt like it centered too much around shallow villians - Roxie & her cohort (whose name I can't remember).

Regardless it was great to learn more of Lucivar & Marian's coupling (although I wish she would have gone up to Daemonar's con...more

I wondered why we didn't get the story of Lucivar and Marian courted but that was answered here. Lucivar tends to bring out the fighter in people and that was no different for Marian who really needed it. I loved their courtship. It was really nice to see the sweet and romantic side of Lucivar. And I loved Marian too.

I really hated Luthvian. I've always disliked her but what she did in this book was very terrible. I don't feel sorry for the way she died in the previous book at all.

Exactly what I would expect from Anne Bishop and the Black Jewels series. Four short stories in one book. The first story, Weaver of Dreams, was an interesting look at where the jewels and the Blood came from but it could have been a little longer with more detail. I would have loved a fuller history of the world. The second short story, The Prince of Ebon Rih, was great. I absolutly loved getting to know Lucivar's wife and how they got started. I really hated Luthvian after reading this story,...more

The story about Lucivar, pretty much made this entire book. While the other short stories were lovely and a joy to read, how Lucivar met Marian is just amazing. Whenever I go back and reread the book, I always reread that story first. Witty sense of humor and a little needed back story for the Realm of the Blood. Could have done without Zuulaman however. And I felt that Kaeleer's Heart was the perfect ending of the entire series involving the family. While I love the Realm and those characters -...more

Coming out of the emotional turmoil that is reading the trilogy back to back to back it's nice to have a little come down with this anthology. The Darkness is still there- Zuulaman- as well as stories that focus on both Lucivar and, the one we really wanted, Daemon.

I really like that Bishop went to more mundane territory with Heart of Kaeleer. So many times when a book ends we are left with the grand happy ending and never get to see the characters we've come to love adjust to everyday life. Th...more

I just love this book! It certainly is the only collection of short stories that I have heartily enjoyed this much! And though I didn't read it in one sitting as I did the first time I read it, it certainly has made me VERY excited to read the brand new book by this terrific author!
I am going to try to savor this new one, but I'm sure I'll be too excited to read it slowly - just like all the others in the series.
Really it is just a wonderful book. Bishop created a wonderful world and peopled it...more

Just when I thought it was over....salvation. I of course had read the Black Jewels trilogy and was browsing through The Barnes when low and behold there it was....another book!! Right there by my other most beloved books...clearly Jaenelle on the cover. I bought this book and floored it home to get reading!!! Anne Bishop never fails to please. This book was so good. I can't get enough of reading the story of how Lucivar and Marian got together, it is so sweet and perfect. And the continuing sto...more

This book contains 4 different short novels about the well-known character from the Triology of the Witch. The first one is about the dream weaver spiders and I wasn’t really happy about this one.
The second one is about Lucivar and his mate Marian and I loved this story. It was so lovely and nice to read about them and how they meet each other. That was very nice.
The third story is about the past of Saetan and his dark power. It was really dark and crueal story. He let a whole island vanish beca...more

Dreams Made Flesh is a fascinating collection of four novellas that go into greater detail about things that appear in the full-length books. It answered several questions that cropped up for me while I was reading the Black Jewels series. And the shorter length of the stories was kind of nice after reading the first four books non-stop, even though I did read these four novellas back-to-back non-stop, too. ;)

A collection of four short stories from the world of the Black Jewels.

Weaver of Dreams: A very short story that takes place as the dragons are dying. It is the first transfer of power from the dragons to another race. A spider, the first weaver, going from a simple mind to so much more. A few pages and yet so beautiful. And bittersweet, the end of the dragons and the birth of the Blood.

The Prince of Ebon Rih: Lucivar Yaslana has been living in Kaeleer for three years. Reunited with his father, l...more

Dreams Made Flesh is a collection of four short stories/novellas centered around Jaenelle and her court. One of the events takes place immediately after the third in the Black Jewels series, so anyone reading this should keep that in mind. It definitely has spoilers for the previous books.

My favorite story by far, was "The Prince of Ebon Rih." How I grinned as I read it! I've always liked Lucivar, but he really is cast as the older brother in the series. There is definitely more to him than that...more

This book is an anthology of short stories piecing together some of the events since Jaenelle's fall from power. The book starts with a short story about the weaver of dreams and how she comes to learn to weave and create the web that makes Jaenelle who she is. The next story is a short story about how Marian comes into the family and how her and Lucivar become married. The following story is the story of Saetan's past, how he and Hekatah divorce and the events that uh...surround that (sorry don...more

I honestly don't know how many times I re-read Dreams Made Flesh a collection of stories from the Black Jewels trilogy, but each and every time I find something new that I love about Anne Bishop's strangely dark and compelling world. Truthfully though, I just fall head over heels in love with those delicious SaDiablo/Yaslana males all over again. I know, I know, but every time Daemon Sadi croons about "dancing with The Sadist", I just want to. I love Bishop's take on alpha males. The SaDiablo/Ya...more

This book of short stories goes with the Black Jewels series

Weaver of Dreams (16.7 Minutes) - 2 * It is the story of how dreams made flesh and brought Jaenelle into the world. This story never really gripped me and it was just OK. I never re-listen to it.

Zuulaman (36.5 Minutes) - 3 * This is a story of Saetan while he is married to Hekata. and how he takes payment from any who hurt or betray him and those he loves.

The Prince of Ebon Rih (8.2 Hours) - 5 * This is the love story of Lucivar and Ma...more

Dreams Made Flesh consists of 4 stories. The first one - Weaver of Dreams was too abstract and full of concepts for me to grasp but is not very long at all so it is okay. The second one is fairly long and the one I just finished last night. I suspect it is going to be my favourite because it is about Lucivar! I love Lucivar. The events are set after Heir to the Shadows and before Queen of Darkness and it is interesting to see the backstory to his and Marian's relationship. I had felt her appeara...more

You can tell by the title of this book that it is one of the Black Jewels books. It actually has 4 short stories that help to understand and/or conclude the Black Jewels Trilogy.

The first story is a short story titled Weaver of Dreams and lets you know how the spider weavers came to be in existence. It's their story and gives some background to a piece of the Black Jewels.

The second story is titled The Prince of Ebon Rih and is the story of how Lucivar met Marian and what they went through in o...more

I've always been rather fond of short stories, especially when they tie into and tie up things from worlds I already love. This set of four short stories is no exception. Once again there is that same wonderful mix of darkness and humor that made me fall for the original trilogy. It gave me another glimpse into the minds and lives of characters that I have come to love, and for that alone it is well worth reading.

I had always wondered about Lucivar and Marian's initial meeting, and I was glad to...more

I absolutely loooooved this book. Dreams Made Flesh is an anthology of short stories surrounding the Black Jewels Trilogy, focusing on the aftermath and the past, as well as giving a greater insight into the lesser characters.

I must admit, I was most determined to read this book for Kaeleer's Heart, the story of Jaenelle and Daemon. I found their love to be absolutely beautiful in the trilogy and I wanted moremoremore of it. As much as possible.

However, I finished this book with so much more t...more
