I found this to be an excellent book in which the author, Kira Salak, retraces the journey across Papua New Guinea that explorer Ivan Champion took in 1927.
This book provides amazing descriptions of Papua New Guinea. It takes you to all parts of PNG, from the cities to the inner jungles, and introduces you to the PNG native tribes and their spiritual and religious beliefs. Salak also meets with the rebel leader of a guerrilla movement fighting in Western New Guinea through a series of adventu...more

Just started this one, and I'm finding it hard to put down, even though it makes me feel like a huge lumpy couch potato. Salak strikes the right balance between the internal and external journey.
Half way through the book, I realized that my initial reading was wrong. Actually, this should be 3.5 stars because the book is not at all balanced, and this is made worse by Salak's continued insistence that she doesn't know why she's on this journey. That's the story--I don't know why I'm here, ...more

It has been a few years since I read this book, but I remember being so impressed by this woman. Her writing was fabulous and reading about her adventures being the first white woman to walk across Papua New Guinea by herself was even better. Every once in a while I'll google her and see what new grand adventures she is planning.

Another ethnographic book which makes me want to travel. I have great respect for the author, who, as a young woman, paddled throughout the inner portions of Papau New Guinea, encountering tribes who had never seen a white woman before. Another book which whets your desire to travel.

A This is one of the best travel books I've ever read. A memoir of adventure, solo travel, Salak journeys into and around PNG with no real plan except hoping to learn more about the people and herself. Brilliant. Inspires me to want to throw it all away and explore the unknown.

I actually know this author, I knew her brother very well. I had a hard time reading this book because of her subtle hostility towards him. He died in Africa 2 summers ago. Maybe you guys might enjoy it more than I did.

I read an article about this author in National Geographic Adventure magazine recently. I wanted to start reading her new novel but figured I'd begin with this since it was more like travel literature. So far so god!

Page turner - so descriptive I was in her backpack on the journey with her. Kira is driven, determined, and honest in her quest to resolve her past and discover her purpose.

While the subject matter was very interesting, I really disliked the narrator, way too whiny.
