For a while I wouldn’t read “Jesus Freaks” because I thought it would be too depressing. A book about people being tortured and killed for their faith isn’t really my cup of tea. Then one day, I sat down in an aisle in Barnes and Noble and started reading it. It was hard to read, it scared me at times, but it wasn’t depressing. In fact, I was finding it uplifting and humbling. I was dumbfounded. But the more I read, the more I began to realize why I found it so uplifting. This book does an amazi...more

This book is often marketed to young adults, but I think that's more because older adults often give up a lot of the zeal for God that comes with youth. It's just too easy for us (especially in the well-off, consumerist west) to forget or blow off any idea that there really are times when we might have to literally give up everything - our family, our religious community, or home, even our life - because someone more powerful than us demands it.

This book is a collection of short (1-...more

My family and I do devotion 4-5 nights a week together, chpater by chapter. As we go through the Bible I like to pick up various devotions that are Bible based, but inspirational or fun to read afterward, as we consider the Word being applied where the rubber meets the road.

One section a night takes about a 100 nights. As there are nearly that many mini 3 pages bio's of those who have gone before us.
This one has been great for that purpose speaking to the hearts of children, yo...more

What a great read!

There is nothing more inspiring than to read about ordinary humans doing extraordinary things through their faith and love of God. Only God gets them through the toughest of trials.
For me personally, this was a really inspiring book. Unfortunately, I had been having trouble
with my faith, wondering if I was doing it for the right reasons , if I was doing it correctly, if
I even loved Jesus. For such a long time I thought I was numb to what Jesus had done ...more

This is not Foxe's Book of Martyrs. I say that before some nut begins to compare the two. Foxe's book is a genuine classic that should be required reading. This is a very good book that deals with the death of (mostly) modern day Christians. I will warn you that if you read this book you will feel small. Most of today's Christian complain about the price of gas and milk and talk about what great tribulation they go through at work because the boss expects them to do their jobs. Jesus Freak...more

This book is fanominal in my opinion. There i no real author just manypeople who talk about their personal expiriences with the villians of the world who don't believe people should believe in Christ. I know it isn't an option on the genre list but this book is a major Christian Nonfiction. Because this book isn't written by an author each story has a different feel to it but the reason i liked this book so much was because of the message that it gives.

This book taught me that I s...more

Jesus Freaks is a book that describes martyrs and how they came to be classified as such. The book follows the path of Christian martyrs from the time of Christ up to modern day believers. The book gives individual stories of those that have been persecuted all over the world. It also contains information on the Christian presence in other countries today and how you can make a difference.

I am thankful that I live in America where I can practice the Christian religion. After read...more

This book will challenge your Christian walk. At the time in my life I read it, I was going through a really difficult, post-adolescent time and it woke me up. Whatever I was going through, I wasn't a martyr, I just had a rough time. I could be going through much worse for much less. It inspired me to be a stronger, better Christian. It spurred me towards seeking God's calling for my life, and being obedient to answering that calling.

Highly recommend this book to teenagers, coll...more

This book is incredibly inspiring, especially for someone in the very late teens, early/mid-20's, when active passion for such things as missionary work can be at its highest. I read this book when I was about 24, and it compelled me to truly think about how devoted I really was to Jesus, and how I would potentially react in the face of persecution because of my faith. Jesus Freaks is a very thought-provoking read, broken up into short biographies of people throughout history who truly lived, an...more

This volume is a wonderfully bound group of stories of men, women, and even children who risked their freedoms, their families, and even thier own lives in order to spread and protect the Word of God.

A beautiful work of hope, faith, and Christ, this book deserves a place on every bookshelf.

I really liked reading the inspirational quotes and passages written at the end of each martyr's story. I think that in the future and even now these quotes can help me through hard ti...more

I read through this book very slowly in year 9 or 10 at high school. I think it's really challenging for a young Christian, especially one who has been brought up in a very sheltered Christian family, to see what people around the world in different times and places are doing with their faith. It can be easy to view your faith as a dormant object that you keep with you but never really use, whereas this book reminded me (without even saying it out loud) that God is powerful and our faith in Je...more

This book is filled with so many powerful and inspiring stories. It really was the first book that began to change my view of Christianity and forced me to wake up to that fact that it's can't just be something we do on Sundays. We sing songs that say, "I have decided to follow Jesus" and to us that means, I said a prayer, I'm ganna try to go to church more, and maybe, if I really feel radical, I try tithing, but maybe like 5%. Yet these guys were will to sacrifice everything for Chris...more

I diddn't realize how much persecution the church is taking around the world. When I first saw this book I thought it would tell the stories of ancient martyrs throughout history, which many of the stories are, but the majority of the stories are from our time. Many people are being imprisoned, tortured and hated for their faith in Jesus. One thing I did learn is what I can do now, here. Praying for the persecuted church is one of the best things we can do. It was inspiring to read th...more

This was a book about events that took place involving the martyrdom of Christians. It doesn't really have a storyline or characters. It just list over and over different people who sacrificed their lives for what they believed in. It shows the courage and even humility of people who were here before us. Whether religion is deep in your heart, I still find it a moving book just for the sake that these people gave up their lives no matter what the punishment would be, and in my opinion that is he...more

I like the way this book is set up with dozens of short stories. Most are a bit depressing as they're about martyrs. It's a good one to pick up and read for a bit and set it down the pick up a week later without having to try to remember where you were in the story when you left it.

I think it's written rather poorly, but it's most likely geared to a younger audience. In that case, it's probably a better read for pre-teens, etc.

This is a great book for someone new to Christianity, because it tells the stories of some modern-day and older martyrs. The book presents the stories in little snapshots of the moments when these people stood up for Jesus even in the face of death or torture. Some of the stories have the potential to be very moving, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is unfamiliar with the sheer heroism and love for God that martyrdom portrays.

However, the language is dumbed-down and th...more

Can you imagine breaking the law by reading a bible? I can't fathom being persecuted for my religious beliefs. I take my freedoms, rights and liberties for granted as I claim to live for Jesus in a free society. This book tells the true stories of people that were persecuted for proclaiming their beliefs. The final part talks about many countries and their political and religious statistics. Great thought provoker!

This book is full of stories of Martyrs from times before Christ to the 1990's. It shows how people have had the faith to endure hours, months, years of torture and ridicule and death for what they believe it most. Kind of gives a person more faith, seeing the extremes these people went to, just to tell their truth. It also shows that the war is still raging on.

Don't be fooled by the name of this book! It's not about crazy freak people who love Jesus (well it's sort of not about that!) It's a book about people who don't waiver in their beliefs and stand up to oppositoion. I think it's a good read for someone who wants to hear an inspirational story. It's just a + if you follow the religion the book talks about! :D

Christians continue to be persecuted for their beliefs around the world. More Christians were killed in the 20th century than all of history prior to that century! This book is a bit graphic, but the stories within the pages make you realize how important it is to pray for Christians in other countries.
Laura
I liked this book a lot! It really showed me how Christians are being persecuted today. I am shocked that in 1998 over 150,000 people were killed for their faith in Christ. That is appalling.

I am surprised I didn't find the book discouraging, but reading about how people praised God even while they were being tortured was just amazing. To have that kind of faith...

Also, this book showed me real stories of the persecuted church, and for the first time, I earnestly praye...more

My teacher was reading this out loud to me and my class when i was in grade......5? maybe. and although i'm not really like any of the people in here i have to admire everything they when through, how much they relied in their faith. it may not be who i am, and i don't think i would ever be able to give up everything like they did, but it's awe inspiring to read about.

amazing. really shows the huge difference these people made, often to those who injured them or persecuted them. exemplifies how a love for God can have an enormous effect on a community through one person and their life. God is truly indescribable, uncontainable, all powerful and untamable.

Even though it was an amazing book full of great examples of young people laying down their lives for their faith, I couldn't help but notice that it was "dumbed down" for teens. The writing could have been much, much, better. I think VOTM book, "Tortured for Christ" is a much better choice.

Amazing.
Amazing.
Amazing Grace.

One Sunday we dedicated the whole service to praying for the persecuted church. We took this book and ripped every page out and distributed to each person in the church. The book has short stories of martyrs and persecuted Christians in various countries. In the service we shared the story of the martyr to encourage us to press on (no matter how difficult). We also shared some of the countries and the persecution described in order to pr...more

Wow! This is not to be taken lightly. I could only read this book in small chunks. It is heartbreaking, convicting, and beautiful at the same time. Most of the people in this book gave their lives for the cause of Christ. It makes me thankful for the freedoms I have.

I enjoyed the book. There are so many martyrs throughout history. The stories need to be told. However, the book needs a much more extensive bibliography so that those interested in real research can find more scholarly research to read.

For Christians and Messianic Jews -- eye-opening and faith building. For all others -- just a good way to see how far faith can take a person when it is all they have left.
Well written, tugs at the heart strings; I will never forget these stories.
