As much as I love this series this book was just ok for me. I prefer the audiobooks, but since this was such a short read I decided to just read the book. The energy of Robb's other books wasn't there right from the beginning, but I assumed it was because I'm so hooked on the audiobooks. So, I got the audiobook - it still fell flat. Although, it picked up half way through, it just never could overcome the absurd plot. With this series being set in the future, you often have to suspend belief for...more

In this novella, the author ventures outside what we typically get with this series. She introduces aspects that have to do with the paranormal, and of course Eve is the first one to claim that there has to be a logical explanation for it all. The uncertainty about whether she is right or not is almost as engaging as the actual murder plot that involves a recent victim and a victim that has been in that same place for eighty-five years and is connected to the recent one.

The main complaint I have...more

#23.5 in the In Death series. It's 2060 and Homicide Lt. Eve Dallas catches the murder of Radcliff C. Hopkins III. It's unusual because it takes place at No. 12, an iconic address in NYC related to the prior century and because the murder was caused by gunshot, an unusual means now that all firearms are in a collection or are banned. The murder eventually links to the disappearance of a singer, 85 years earlier, and believed killed by Hopkins grandfather. The are inexplicable touches of the supe...more

This was my first audio-book and I chose a good one! Haunted in Death is a novella in J.D. Robb's In Death series. It originally appeared in the Bump in the Night anthology along with stories by Mary Blayney, Mary Kay McComas, and Ruth Langan. Since I somehow missed that anthology the story was new to me.

The plot is relatively simple. A murder is discovered in a building that is assumed to be haunted and/or cursed and Eve needs to figure out what happened. The victim is the grandson of the forme...more

My second Robb novelette and I enjoyed this one very much. I got this one on cd from the library to listen to in the car. Some books I prefer this way and I think this is going to be one of those series that I prefer to listen to. I felt connected to the narrator right away and it was performed very well.

I chose this one because, well, it said Haunted in the title. I love me some fake spookiness going on at a murder scene. But wait - is it fake? hmmm The answer to that, is left up to the dear re...more

Sadly, I had to file this one under fantasy. I'm going to give one more of Roberts's short stories a try before giving up. I really enjoy the longer novels, but am finding the short novellas to be too supernatural for my liking. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy supernatural stories a great deal, but when Roberts/Robb has already established a universe based in technology and science, I feel like she's jumping ship with these smaller stories because they all involve supernatural elements that don't ap...more

I am going to copy and paste the same message to every single one of JD Robb's In Death Series...Love love love these series.

I was like everyone else after they read this book, where is the next one. I have read and reread every single book in this series, and now I have listened to each one of them in audio.

After having listened to them in audio, I have to say WOW. Take the time to listen to one from your local library. It is worth it!

I checked out this book on cd from the library to listen to in the car. Lieutenant Eve Dallas and her partner Detective Peabody are called out to a homicide scene at a night club. The owner, Radcliff Hopkins, is the grandson of the original owner who was responsible for making Number 12 the big success it was in the 1960s. As the facts begin to fall into place, there seems to be a connection with the cold case from 85 years ago.

Love the series. This installment is a novella, with a supernatural element (a ghost). It's getting three stars because I'm a few weeks behind in getting books recorded and I can't really remember it. I wouldve made a note on my list if I thought it was terrible or particularly great, but I didn't. So I liked it when I read it, but since I can't remember it very much less than a month later it doesn't deserve 4 stars.

This is one of the shorter novellas included as part of anthologies by several authors. It was okay, but I miss the detail and story-development that the full length novels in the In Death series have.

When a body is found at an infamous, supposedly haunted AND cursed building - a former hot club from the 1970's and 1980's, Eve is on the case.

Despite her refusal to accept any notion of ghosts or curses or haunted buildings, even Eve has some odd experiences as she investigates a current murder th...more

Again, an audio "read." This one was short, but I enjoyed it. I just skipped over the detailed "love" scene. Your basic Eve story with a supernatural element in it. It ends well in that you do not really know if the killer is just psycho or if it was she was "possessed", it is really your interpretation. I liked the ghost element to it since Eve seems to be an unbeliever.

A short & entertaining mystery, which leaves you pondering how much influence the supernatural has in the case right until the very end. A tale of two murders 100 yrs apart that are yet linked.

Set a little in the future - 2060, random bits of futuristic slang are thrown in. Not really sure this added to the story, but it didn't really detract from it either.

Does Dallas believe in ghosts? Of course not, but this one is creepy and ghastly enough to rattle her for a time. Fantastic novella with a stunning plot and a brilliant twist at the end...... Just when you and Eve think you know who it is, the killer steps up from behind the scenes and catches your breath.
You have to love Dallas and Robb, long may they reign!!

This was a novella in a book with two others, "Three In Death." It was only 100 pages, whereas the usual length of her books is over 300. I really liked this, but prefer the novels. Of course, nothing is really haunted, however, everyone but Eve believes that 12, a former NY hot spot, is haunted. As usual, I did not figure out who the murderer was until Eve did.

Ghosts are definitely not my thing. I've never been a fan of them, and don't believe in them in the slightest. So the idea of there being ghosts in this series really threw me off. The main character doesn't believe in them, but then she has an encounter with ghosts or something similar. This story just didn't work for me because of the ghost thing.
Kerry
A lovely, short interlude with Eve, where she faces a mystery that might have a paranormal element - something she refuses to believe in. Well told and fits nicely in a paranormal anthology without going over the top about it and changing the essence of Eve and her stories.

Detective Eve Dallas is not only busting killers, but ghosts! Is it true the spirit of a young woman haunts #12? Or is there something more heinous happening? When the body of the new owner is found shot to death and a skeleton is found inside a wall, Eve refuses to question her beliefs about the hereafter, but is the killer flesh and blood or not? A fun, quick read.

This is the third story I read on the Lt. Eve Dallas series, this novella was short and funny, with super logical, always angry and non-believing-in-ghosts Eve Dallas trying to solve a crime while everyone around her talks about ghosts and curses. Pretty entertaining.
Zafia
Well written SS. I enjoyed it, but over so fast so i'm only giving it 4 stars. I'm not sure what to make of it. They didn't find any reason to the cold or the singing. Who knows, whether it was tech or a ghost. Not too far a stretch for it to be a ghost with all the sensitives in the series, perhaps it will follow that line down the road.
Anyways now i wanna read the next book and see what path it takes. Either way its bound to be a real treat.

One of the other readers said it was "Eve Dallas meets Scooby Doo". I'll go along with that, and that's why I consider it one of the lesser of the series.

Fortunately for series continuity, you can skip it and miss nothing.

This was a novella so it was fairly short. I missed catching up on all of the characters. There wasn't much to the continuing story of everyone. Instead it focused on solving the mystery only. The mystery was interesting and good though.

I read this as part of "three in Death" Three in Death

I thought this was yet another great In Death book, although it was a bit short. I always like when Roberts adds a little bit of paranormal in this series.

I did like how Peabody got a pot more independence in this nook than the other ones that I've read so far.

Id recommend this book for a short read.

Two-haiku review:

Haunted house murder
Uncovers crime from old times.
Is Number Twelve cursed?

Eve is pragmatic.
She doesn't believe in ghosts,
Not even when seen.

Eve Dallas discovers that all is not as it seems in a murder that seems to come from beyond the grave. Interesting commentary on popular culture.

This was a quick read and a good read. The Dallas In Death series has been good. There was a nice twist at the end and the story was good.
Jessica
I like supernatural mysteries okay, and I like the Eve Dallas books, but this is not a peanut butter + chocolate scenario.
Ender Wiggin
Ehhh...I could have done without reading this one.

It seemed really out-of-place with the other "In Death" books.
