I was all set to give this book three stars, because while it's nothing great, it's okay. A lot of it reminded me of where I grew up and that is usually a reason I'll sentimentally enjoy a book more than I would based on its own merits.

I picked this up in a used book store based on the back cover and a quick flip through the pages. Everything Must Go proved to be as well-written as I'd guessed it would be - a thoroughly enjoyable read with visid, descriptive language. It lacked something, however; while the characters and their actions were vividly described and brought to life, I felt it lacked a more in-depth exploration of their motives and personality. I will admit it - this is a book that I stopped reading in the middle. It made me feel bad about the protaganist's life, my life, my family's life, my neighbor's life ... like there is only self-delusion and repetitive behavior in this world and nothing else, so why bother do something as silly as read a book all the way through?

Honestly, this book sucked. The cover reads, "can one terrible moment change your life forever?" The answer is no. Reading this book was a bunch of terrible moments spread over several weeks because the book moved slow, was uninteresting and overall really downplayed the "terrible moment!" This is a classic example of an accomplished author slapping a book together because she can. I wouldn't waste your time reading it.

I was a little disappointed by this, because I was expecting to be blown away, as I was by the author's other novel, Me & Emma. This story is a solid profile of a guy in a small town, who starts working in a retail store right after high school, and it follows his life -- or lack thereof -- up to the day the store closes, many years later, the world having changed around him as he has failed to evolve.

I was soooo disappointed in this book. I loved "Emma and Me" and expected a lot from this novel but was very let down. My biggest issue is that the basis of the book about a tragedy that occured when the main character was seven years old. We don't find out until page 250 what that tragedy was. I just didn't have the patience for it. Very mundane. Very boring.

I think the author achieved what she was going for but I found it a very depressing read during the holiday season. Having been deeply affected by "Emma and Me", I was looking forward to this book. Even the bit of hope offered at the end is random. I chose "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" to erase the bad feelings from "Everything Must Go".

I'm not quite sure how to write my review. This story was, I believe, almost intended to be read as "flat." The main character was deeply affected, yet deeply flat. So I feel like it accomplished what it was going for, I'm just not sure I think it was going for much. I don't feel like this was a particularly ambitious novel.

The main character in this book was so........ BLAH, he drove me up the wall........ but what REALLY pissed me off was that the author TOTALLY dissed rob thomas, and he is IT for me, and to read that someone dissed him goes against a LOT of what i believe in............ don't mess with my man!! LOL

Ugh. I hate it when I am so annoyed by a main character. Come on already and pull yourself together! This is a classic tale of having the potential and wasting it in your hometown because your too scared to go out and tackle the world. I'm also not a fan of stalkerish male main characters.

Well, this was one of those books you keep reading because you're quite sure the main character is going to snap out of it eventually...he does not. I'm not sure I'd recommend this other than the author does do an outstanding job painting a vivid picture of the characters.

Interesting book. She's a great writer, but this story seemed to have gone nowhere. I felt alot about this character. Sometimes pity, sometimes dislike. He was just plain freaky and had very bland emotions.

This was an, erm, interesting book. I enjoyed reading it, even if it was a bit slow. But I can guarantee I'll never read it again. Slow, loping, depressing, it made me appreciate my life.

I have liked all of her books-this one not the most, but it was still good. I find her style of writing kind-of intriguing. This was a good read,
