I read this book with a group of friends while living in Chicago. It was probably the first book I'd read to that point that emotionally clarified how sexism and misogyny work. It was one of those "Got it" kind of moments. By having a group to talk about hooks' examples of growing up and seeing how patriarchy, sexism, and misogyny directly hurt her and her family, it created space for myself and other individuals to talk openly and honestly about our own experiences that had either ina...more

emotionally challenging!! clear, concise and loving text.

i've been reading and re-reading this book for more than a month. on any given day i only have the emotional depth and strength to handle bits and pieces.

certainly is a life-changing/self-help/true-crime/etc. exploration.

i'm fortunate to have a partner with whom i can share my feelings -- without a reflexive disgust for my "weakness".

yet, my transformation is a challenge she hasn't been able to withstand without s...more

It's not easy to discuss the way patriarchy impacts men. Hooks does a very good job at not only outlining all the ways patriarchy impede men from total growth but she goes the extra step to gives some ideas on how to undo patriarchy's harm and present at least an outline of what an anti-patriarchal male feminist might resemble.

It was the 1st work of hers I read and I'm not quite used to alarmist words being thrown around so often (eg terrorism) but I didn't let it get in my way of reading fu...more

I love Bell Hooks -- and I love her recent writings that delve into relationships between men and women. She offered a lot of insights to explain why women act the way they do, and why men act the way they do. Let's just say it helped me to see the bigger picture. ;)

This book is great for anyone interested in improving their relationships with men (and good also for men who are interested in improving their relationships with women).

I used to think that bell hook's books on love would be hippie dippy until I actually read one. This book is great and shows how patriarchy negatively affects men and our ability to love. It shows how much men have to gain from dismantling patriarchy and from feminist movement. I highly recommend it

Bell hooks is the author of my house. So here I am, learning more about myself from bell hooks then in years of therapy. I suppose this book was written for more of a male audience, but it speaks to anyone who wants a further understanding of masculinity and love. Hense the name, duh.

this is maybe the worst and also the most hilarious book i have ever been made to read. i sort of love it because of how ridiculous it is, never buy this book or try to read it. just call me and i will read you some quotes to laugh about to feel better.

Everyone who loves should read this book. It discusses the issues of how patriarchy oppresses not only women, but holds men back from becoming the emotional beings that they should be allowed to be.

Didn't speak to men as much as I hoped it would, was more about men, but was still a very interesting read. 4.5 out of 5. (Goodreads really needs to implement half stars...)
