A useful guide to the big island of Hawai'i. Practical advice on hiking, snorkeling, etc. Much of what I wrote in my review of the companion Kaua'i book applies to this one. The island is divided into areas and then individual outings are described, right down to where to park and which side of the beach to enter the water. Very helpful for the active tourist.
Did I mention that I will be heading for the islands in 5 days?

If you like to beat the crowds and explore while on vacation, then the Big Island is the place to go and this is the book you need. We went all over the place (nearly 3 weeks). I REALLY recommend the South Kohala Coast, where Trailblazer guided us on coastal hike that had some awesome swimming spots with postcard-clear water. Some places were close to resorts, others were out there. We took a short hike (from an unmarked spot on the highway!) to this old resort with a remote beach--which I menti ...more

Abram & I like to do adventure vacations! So we were excited about this book. This had a lot of potential. But I felt it was hard to read, hard to follow. Not laid out well for ease of use. We actually only used it with success for one of our hikes.(polulu valley) Maybe I was brain dead when I read it, but we both thought we could hike to a waterfall ( or a few waterfalls) in the waipio valley only to get down in there, hike around for a few hours and find nothing) one thing I really wanted ...more

I didn't quite finish reading this or the Oahu one from the same series before our trip (and wasn't motivated to finish them afterwards) but since I read a big chunk of both, I'm including them here as read. There's some trip planning advice in the backs of the books that I think would have made more sense placed closer to the start of the book to give some context for the detailed information that follows. I liked the organization of these books better than the "Revealed" series. For instance, ...more

It is so well organized and concentrates on activities. Hiking and snorkeling are prominent and directions are very detailed. Everything a first time visitor needs to see and find the island's best beaches and trails. The writing is clear and beautiful black and white photos preview what's ahead.

Maps and historical background round it out. For the price, a guide worth buying and having in your pack.

We used this book as our trusted advisor on a three week that sent us on all points of the compass
on the Big Island. I love the way it is organized (all activities geographically). There are scads of beautiful B&W photos that really paint and accurate picture. The writing in concise (not breezy like so many guidebooks) with just enough detail to add depth and interest, without being tmi. Loved it!

I'm glad I had this book! There were several hidden corners of Hawaii - beautiful, heavenly places - that did not appear in the Lonely Planet guide (which I also used). This book focuses on activities and categorizes them by level of difficulty, suitable for children, etc. I like activities, and that's what this book is all about.

Excellent guide for the big island. We camped while in Hawaii and this book was a blessing. Detailed with good tips on where to camp, beaches that held secrets, hiking tips and much more. Highly recommend, for those who prefer to skip the resort, hotel and tour bus scene.
